Beta Net
One of the things you have been asking for some time is the ability to contact climbers. Site messaging is now here:
- you can leave a message with a climber by visiting their public page,
- you can send a message to a group of climbers through your network in the community pages, and
- you can send a query or message to climbers who have climbed in an area through the index (Beta Net).
- you can send a query or message to climbers who have done a particular climb through index climb page (Beta Net).
Messages are delivered to the members account, and will be available next time they log in.
Being the guy on the end of the support email for the site, I am forever getting questions about areas I just don't know about. Usually my responses starts 'Thanks for your enquiry , unfortunately...'. Now with Beta Net you can ask climbers who have climbed in the area.
Beta Net allows you to send targeted messages to climbers who know the area (or the climb). This could be useful for:
- finding someone to climb with
- asking about gyms or climbing instructors near by
- finding the best way to get to a crag
- see if anybody has left some gear at the base of the climb
- starting a discussion about area access
- an important news item for the area
- basically you can find out about anything (area specific) that is not already available in the site.
Responses will be delivered to your account, but available for others to read.
In order to help manage you inbox, messages expire. When using Beta Net, you set up a message to expire after 1 day to 2 months. If you need a response by Friday, you can set up the message to disappear after that, saving people from reading spurious messages.
All members are connected to Beta Net by ticking climbs, contributing climbs and creating shortcuts. Beta Net is only available if at leat 10 climbers are associated with the area.
Messaging and Beta Net have been made available on a trial basis.
BTW, please don't use Beta Net for queries that are adequetely answered by the sites reference material (for example, what are the best climbs in an area)?
This is fairly experimental technology, if you find any problems please contact me (scd@thecrag.com).
Regards...
