About Crag Planner

theCrag.com

theCrag.com is a project to build a global index of climbs as an online resource for rock climbers.

Rock climbers of all standards use the site for pre and post trip planning. Read the FAQ to understand the goals and vision of the site.

If you only learn about two features on the site they should be 'Quickfind' and 'Crag Planner'. If you do not know how to use these then ask one of your climbing friends or send us an email.

Quickfind allows you to find climbs by grade (any grading system), height and/or stars at any area in the index (eg all starred 5.10a climbs in Yosemite).

Crag Planner is the rock climbers trip planning tool, typically used in conjunction with Quickfind. It lets you build personal tailored climb lists on a single interactive PDF page that you can print and take to a crag. (eg single page PDF of starred 5.10a climbs in Yosemite).

Crag Planner

Crag Planner is a rock climbers' trip planning tool. It lets you build personal tailored climb lists on a single PDF page, which can be printed and taken on your trip. It also includes new and unique statistics on climbs Qualty Score and Busy-ness Score.

Save writing on dozens of guidebooks, mark your climb attempts on the Crag Planner printed document and when you return from your trip use the electronic version to help record your ticks permanently at www.thecrag.com.

Figure 1 shows a graphical sample of what the PDF looks like, while Table 1 provides some real samples for you to download.

Stars are assigned to climbs, using the climbs Quality Score. Quality Score is based on member contributed quality ratings (seven point scale from 'Crap' to 'Mega Classic') and climb comments. Busy-ness Score of a climb is displayed pictorially using a small graph next to the grade. It gives an indication on how many ticks this climb is getting relative to other climbs in the area. Note that while thecrag.com's index is relatively new in any area, climbs may not have a Quality Rating or Busy-ness score assigned. Over time, as more climbers use index, climbs will eventually be assigned a Quality and Busy-ness score.

The document is interactive, click on a climb name and information about the climb will appear in your browser[1]. Click on an area name, and you will get statistics about the area. Click on the climbers account name and you can see their latest ticks.

You can add climbs to your tick list by clicking the tick box to the left of the climb name.

The document includes a control area, where you can re-generate the list of climbs in a single click. You can then make multiple tick selections for quick ticking at the website.

Table 1 provides some sample Crag Planners for you to download. As a member of thecrag.com you can create Crag Planner documents like these for any area in the index.

What about guidebooks?
Crag Planner has been designed to work in conjunction with guidebooks. Crag Planner summarizes all the climbs of interest for a particular trip. On the second page of the document it lists the guidebooks that cover the climbs in the document and how many climbs they cover. This helps you decide what guidebooks to bring or purchase.

You will still need the guidebooks for topos and route descriptions.

Help keep your guidebooks in good condition. Crag Planner is a disposable document that you can write on, get dirty and discard after the trip - you can always get another.

How does it work?
Crag Planner documents are PDF snapshots of a list of climbs generated from almost anywhere on the website, including 'Quickfind' searches and personal tick lists. You will also find pre-configured Crag Planners available through your account and as you navigate the index.

Log on to www.thecrag.com, and navigate to the area of interest, click on the 'Quickfind' and select your search query. Near the top of the query results select the 'Crag Planner' link. Then follow the steps to generate a Crag Planner document. The Crag Planner will be emailed to you immediately.

Crag Planners may be generated by Supporters of the www.thecrag.com. Once generated they may be distributed to small groups (less then 15 people).

Sharing it with your friends.
Prior to your next trip, use thecrag.com to search for climbs your group may want to do on the trip. Create a Crag Planner for the trip and distribute to the group via email.

In this way everybody in the group will be on the same page!
