Description

Cerro de la Campana and Piedra Grande form one of the main bouldering areas in Central Mexico. Located in Huixquilucan, State of Mexico, and only 35 km from Mexico City, the area has over 200 problems spread in over 60 boulders ranging from rooves to slabs. It also holds some potential for sport and trad climbing. Note that access to this area like many others in the country is sensitive and common sense etiquette must be observed.

Access issues

Access to this area like many others in the country is sensitive and common sense etiquette must be observed.

Approach

From Mexico City:

Take the Mexico-Toluca highway (toll or toll-free) and around the 36.5th km you will see signs for the Salazar exit, just before a pedestrian bridge (at time of writing, also you will see small rustic stores right before the exit). Take this exit and continue straight until you reach the town of Salazar (en route you will see the Lake of Salazar on your right and you will cross an old railway).

From Toluca:

Exit the city via Paseo Tollocan which turns into the Toluca-Mexico highway. Follow this until about the exit at 35th km and turn around the other way (towards Toluca). From here, see the last part of the instructions "From Mexico City".

Once in Salazar:

You will reach a mini mart called "El Milagro" (where you can purchase the guidebook at time of writing). When you see this, go left and continue straight. You will eventually come across a few crossroads, and where you go will depend on the area you wanna go to. See the two maps.

Where to stay

One cannot camp in the area, and therefore hotels or other accomodations (which are plentiful) in the Santa Fe area of Mexico City or Toluca are fair options.

Ethic

Access to this area like many others in the country is sensitive and common sense etiquette must be observed: do not chip holds, do not leave large chalk residues, carry out what you carry in, and generally follow the "leave no trace" principles.
