- distance climbed
I was introduced to climbing in 1999 by my friend Roger Boseley; "Boz" had a regular group of friends that he climbed with at Acme Gym in town on Thursday nights, followed by dinner at Hawkers Corner. Quang, Andy, Stu and Ivor welcomed me and soon climbing began to overtake kayaking as my passion.
On New Years Day 2001 Boz took us out to Morialta for an outdoor climb at Far Crag (my first). The first route I climbed was Lord's Prayer followed by Bung, that was it, I was hooked.
About a year later we took a trip to Arapiles, top ropes in hand and once again had our eyes opened. Boz, who was unable to climb due to a bad shoulder lent me his rack and I headed to Morialta to learn the hard way how to lead.
A couple of months down the track and - self taught - it was off to Arapiles again, this time to lead! With racks each consisting of 5 stoppers, a cam, six 'draws, two screwgates a sling and a handful of hexes we headed back to Araps for some multipitching fun (and fear). With such tiny racks the pitches were run out - we saved the hexes for belays, leaving five stoppers and a cam for each pitch, we knew we were pushing it, but chose our routes accordingly and had a blast.
Two weeks later and full of confidence we headed to Moonarie... More learning.
Since then climbing has been a constant in my life. I have made the best of friends through it, meeting some of my closest friends whilst on the wall. I have climbed the boulders in Fontainbleau, Elbsandstein on knotted slings in Saxony Switzerland Germany, The Wolgan, all over Tasmania, Grampians and probably a few spots I have forgotten. It continues to be an amazing journey.
