I read the crag description wrong and traversed right way too early. It was the most sketchy trad climbing I have done so far, but I managed to get up to the belay point with sheer luck. The route was chossy, the holds were falling apart, and the pro was spaced.

Fantastic. Led all the pitches. Belay spots were a highlight (especially the saddle belay after pitch four), and climbing on the second and fourth pitches the best. Third pitch goes up from the near the rock pillar and traverses left from a very small ledge and overhang, same height as the next belay. You're aiming for a huge corner with a dirt belay pad and a couple of trees.

Brilliant climb - every single pitch is great value. Rosea is incredible - you feel like you are the only people in the world.
Pitch 1 - start is best up groove, but be careful about first move as it’s not easy to protect. Pitch 2 - absolutely amazing climbing … nice moves and great position. Rock is really solid - nothing loose at all. Fantastic pro - you can zip it up tight. Pitch 3 - climbing is much easier, but some very suspect rock masquerading as jugs. Lots of b-lines though. Ends at huge shady ledge - good mid climb lunch spot. Pitch 4 - best pitch of the climb! Sustained, steep, intimidating … and on great rock. Some people get a little lost - so: start up right hand corner (tree gives you a good step up). A few moves up trend slightly left over ripply rock - pro is ok here, not great, but moves flow well. You need to keep going up until you find a place to traverse right - I skipped the first option (you’ll see the rock in the middle bulge) and went across higher - better hands and some protection. Traverse ends about 1m below an old piton in the right hand crack. You’re now in the right hand crack … and this is where the fun begins. It’s steep, pro is tricky, and hands and feet not always obvious. It’s full value and you need to commit - your reward is the best climbing on the route! Find your way up this until you get to the rock at the top of the crack. The crack continues above this rock - but you can see the traverse to the right from below … do not climb this second crack (You will see a rail with lots of chalk above left of the rock). Lots of pro once you get to the rock - either at the top left or from lower you can get a big nut in around the bottom right. Just be conscious of drag for when you traverse - best to use a long runner. Climb up the left hand side of the rock and then over it to the right. You’re now at the start of the traverse. This is great value … but not hard or intimidating after what you’ve just climbed. You can get great pro right across it and there is a rail for both your hands and your feet. The pro at the belay station is absolutely bomber - I got in two cams on the arete, a great nut, and an upwards cam down low. Rope management is a bit of a challenge as this belay is small - I used a semi hanging belay … hanging out in space on a small ledge 100m off the ground with epic views … it doesn’t get much better! Pitch 5 - step up a metre and then right … then back left over easy ground. Step around left of big bolder and up interesting wide crack … not much for feet or hands and big drop below! Final 5m is really nice and you’re done! (Well … except for the walk back to the car). epic adventure in an incredible location. |

Somehow we went off route on pitch 4 to an extremely difficult overhang that’s probably a grade 19. Alternate route for those who want to challenge themselves. Even better, lower down to start of pitch 4 to retrieve big cam and re-climb pitch 4 to protect and get through the overhang.

Gorgeous first trad multi for martin and me. Very wet from the previous days, but i wasn't going to let that get in our way. Jumped on the first pitch before there could be any complaints. Martin led pitch 2, which was dripping for the lower half, and as a result definitely stiff for a 15. I led pitch three (and after martin pulled a rock off on himself) pitch 4 to keep us rolling. The belay seat for pitch 4 is as good as they come. worth it just for that!
Topped out and called it a day and a trip. I was thankful to finally get some good weather and adventure after a week of sport caves and rain.

Geez, this thing covers some impressive terrain at the grade. Not recommended as your first 14 or 15 though. Stratospherically more difficult than an equivalent route at Arapiles (like Lamplighter).
As with the The Last Rites (done immediately prior), pitch lengths are rubbish. Top of the pinnacle is 48m not 60m, and pitches 3, 4 & 5 combined are also 50m, not 62m. With a 70m rope, some long slings, judicious gear placements (don't put anything near the chains at the end of p1) and the benefit of hindsight, I would combine pitches 1, 2 & 3, then pitches 4 & 5. We put pitch 3 in with 4 & 5 instead because I selfishly wanted to hang out on the top of the pinnacle. We also finished up Debutante Direct Finish which is also pretty cool, although definitely much harder than the rest. Party of 3, 4 hours bottom to top and back down again. |

Excellent, though I'm not sure I agree with the Selected Climbs guide that it's worth coming to Rosea for this climb alone. Adventurous with some tricky moves up the corner on P2, and a committing but surprisingly easy roof traverse on P4. Rope drag means pitches can't really be linked together, with the possible exception of P2 and P3. Carried cams up to BD #4, but probably could have skipped the big stuff, placing mainly small nuts and small to medium cams.

Awesome climb, good protection, just enough exposure. If you don't mind the huge drag, keep on climbing for 5m after the traverse for a less exposed belay (appreciable in a cold & windy day). Walked back in the dark the long way as we did not find the stairway path.

Pete: p1, 3 & 5. Me: p2 & 4. Started off easy, but route finding on pitch 4 led me to traverse back and forth across the corner. Definitely did a 'variant'. Great exposed fun with amazing views from the belays.

don't be second simul-climbing this one!! that experience took away from how good the climb really is. awesome line! pretty tough for 14 i thought and maybe even more like 16 in some spots. anyway plenty of gear and lots of ways you can climb through problems. definitely is a classic mt rosea climb.
