Trad and Top Rope

Long/Lat: 12.851945, 49.087943

Unique Features And Strengths:

Short routes on white quartzite and kids-friendly setting

Description:

The "Pfahl" is a unique linear quartzite formation that surface at several places in the Bavarian Forest. Here, at "Großer Pfahl", large parts of it have been mined. The remains ("Unterer Pfahl" =lower, eastern part, an open cast and the "Oberer Pfahl" =climbable upper, western part) have been declared a conservation area with many information boards on wildlife, geology and mining. "Oberer Pfahl" is less frequented by non-climbers and features an idyllic setting among heathers, blueberries and quatzite blocks of up to 15 m height. Safe for kids, plenty of easier routes. Few bolts, expect some trad and toprope routes for the harder grades. http://www.kleimbing.de/Gebiete/Pfahl/pfahl.html

Access Issues:

The entire Großer Pfahl is a conservation area. Climbing is only allowed (and worthwile) at the western part ("Oberer Pfahl") and restricted to roughly half of the blocks and their south faces. No bolting allowed.

Approach:

From Viechtach, drive NW on B85 towards Prackenbrach. Shortly after leaving the town, you will spot signs to "Großer Pfahl" and a parking on the right. Keep going for another 1.5 km (passing a pullout on th left) to another pullout on the left. Park here and cross the road. the rocks are just behing the trees. Beware: In some desciptions, the term "Kleiner (Little) Pfahl" is used for the upper (only climbable) part, which is somewhat confusing because there is different place of that name somewhere else.
