Long/Lat: 7.133488, 44.685091

Description:

The Monviso Massif is an area in the Cottian Alps with several peaks ranging between 2900 and the 3841m of altitude of Monviso, well known for its pyramid-like shape that can be seen from some distance. This area offers amazing hiking opportunity as well as a huge amount of climbing from classic trad to sport and alpine. The lower peaks host some classic long sport routes on vertical granite faces, recently revamped. The north faces offer some ice and alpine routes of international fame and popularity. The area is also full of "via normale" routes that can be used as a mean of safe descent but also as hiking routes to reach one of many peaks. Rock climbing season is between August and mid September, where all snow have disappeared from eastern and south facing walls and rock has settle.

Approach:

The huts of Giacoletti, Vallanta and Quintino Sella are the three main bases when approaching the climbs. They offer cheap basic accomodation alpine style when booked in advance but also offer camping opportunity, meals, toilets and phone. The huts can be reached by walk (2 hrs approx) from Pian Del Re (car park) but they are only open with facilities during the summer months. For the winter period (October to May) the huts are open with no facilities and a number of sheltered bivouacs are spread through the many passes and peaks, offering a good insurance against bad weather. Some shelters can be used only for emergencies: please refer to local guides or members of CAI at the huts, the association of Alpine Guides for detailed informations when planning.

Wear a helmet, also when just lingering at the base! Activity on adjacent climbs, uphill sectors or hiking paths often releses rockfall!

Approach:

From Riva, follow signs towards "Valle di Ledro" through long tunnel (5 km). 200 m after the tunnel, there are parking bays left and right of the road. Walk back towards the mouth of the tunnel and turn right into the old Ponale road and through an old tunnel. After 200 m there is a stone wall supporting the left slopes. Where it ends, the path to the sectors start.

Unique Features And Strengths:

Less frequented low-altitude crag with views on lake Garda

Description:

A former alpine training ground, this area has been reequipped with bolts and now offers some pleasant climbs somewhat above the shore of lake Garda.

Approach:

From Riva, follow signes towards "Limone". It is safest to leave the car in the park house just after the tunnel. You may take a chance an continue for another 500 m, but parking there seems mostly restricted or is occupied. After the hydropower station (huge pipes from uphill), the old Ponale road (closed for cars) branches off, while the road to Limone continues through a tunnel. Walk ~200 m along the old Ponale road just before its first tunnel. There, opposite an info-board, a narrow trail leads right and uphill. After 3 min you reach the cliff.

Description:

The Dolomites (Italian: Dolomiti; Ladin: Dolomites; German: Dolomiten; Venetian: Dołomiti: Friulian: Dolomitis) are a mountain range located in northeastern Italy. They form a part of Southern Limestone Alps and extend from the River Adige in the west to the Piave Valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east. The northern and southern borders are defined by the Puster Valley and the Sugana Valley (Val Sugana). The Dolomites are nearly equally shared between the provinces of Belluno, South Tyrol and Trentino.

There are also mountain groups of similar geological structure that spread over the River Piave to the east – Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave; and far away over the Adige River to the west – Dolomiti di Brenta (Western Dolomites). There is also another smaller group called Piccole Dolomiti (Little Dolomites) located between the provinces of Trentino, Verona and Vicenza (see the map).

One national park and many other regional parks are located in the Dolomites. In August 2009, the Dolomites were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

History:

That of asphodel is the first historic wall system Lagoni , an area well known to climbers Tuscan-Emilian for the fantastic sandstone blocks scattered in the beech woods. Among the sectors that is currently equipped with the most difficult routes . She climbs on rough sandstone discreetly making extensive use of the hands and feet of tack often taken jugs . Walls, corners and edges leggeremente supported are interrupted by short overhangs where they tend to concentrate the difficulty of the routes . The wall goes to the sun in the afternoon. The streets presented here were recently re-equipped with plugs 10x86mm steel double ring expansion have more assurance seal on the sandstone ( material funded in part by the ' Precarious Balance ' of Pisa) . With some exceptions, the distance between the guards remained faithful to the original pitons , then slightly higher compared to modern standards . As for the other sectors of the area we recommend the use of a helmet for the insurer. There are another 14 shots with the original anchors strongly degraded on which you are strongly advised to climb .
