Trad, Sport and Unknown

Long/Lat: 0.732404, 41.037870

Unique Features And Strengths:

Tivissa is and unknown climbing area offering world class climbs, both trad and sport, located only 90 miles S of Barcelona (Catalonia), and 12 miles inland from the Mediterranean sea. There are nearly 500 routes and more developments are being carried on. The new, updated guidebook will be avilable before summer (aliverock@yahoo.com).

Description:

Limestone area, many different formations of all aspects (climbing confortable year round). Footwork is essential, and handholds are dropplets and crimps with some jugholds and a good dose of crack climbing of all sorts, from thin fingers to chimneys. Hi-tech aid is also available. The bulk of the free climbing routes fall within the 5c-6c range, being easier and especially harder ones abundant.

Access Issues:

Drive on AP-7 motorway (toll!) take exit #38 and follow Tivissa signposting. 1h30min from Barcelona airport.

Approach:

Ask locals and get a guidebbok copy (aliverock@yahoo.com). There are no access issues because the place is uncrowded, but most rocks are on private land, so be respectful with locals and carry out all that you bring in, and a bit more. Bird nesting closures apply, are signposted and are enforced, so please do not cheat!

Where To Stay:

Local camping, a reasonable priced hotel, or under the stars (be polite, clean and keep a low profile).

Ethic:

Do not add bolts to existing routes! Do not cut trees nor bushes. Respect birds, insects, lizards and any living being in general.

History:

A.Brull and J.M.Anglada established a couple routes in early 70's. 99% of everything else has been established by Josep E. Castellnou, starting on mid 80's and development still continues today. All fixed gear, bolts and any expenses paid by that climber! 500-plus routes to date... and counting!

Summary:

Long/Lat: -0.070456, 42.306186

Unique Features And Strengths:

Tufas, and steep hard routes.

Description:

Deep in Spain's Sierra de Guara lies one of Europe's most famous climbing areas: Rodellar. This limestone eldorado, which takes its name from the tiny village nestled snug at the end of the road in the picturesque Mascun valley, is quite simply breathtaking. Park the car and walk from the village for just 10 minutes and you'll see what we mean: a beautiful gorge suddenly opens up below, with its multitude of huge overhanging caves, arches, pinnacles and slabs eroded smooth over thousands of years by the Mascun river. Gobsmacking! Catch your breath, rush back to the car, grab your gear, choose the crag which suits you most (tufas? crimps? shade? sun? you name it, Rodellar's got it) and get climbing.

Approach:

Rodellar lies km 60 NE of Huesca in Northern Spain, close to the French border. From Barcelona drive west along the A2 to Lerid, from here take the N40 to Monzon, Barbastro and then Rodellar (270km).

Where To Stay:

There is a selection of campgrounds, a refugio (Kalandraka) and lovely new apartments (Valle De Rodellar)

The routes on Roca dels Arcs are serious undertakings, often undergraded. Be prepared, start early, take helmets, water, warm clothes, prussiks and headtorches.

1.4.26. Terradets 272 routes in Crag

Sport, Trad and other styles

Long/Lat: 0.880149, 42.044437

Description:

Most well known these days for the sector Paret de les Bruixes (the Witches Wall) offering superb hard sport climbing, Terradets has much more to offer in terms of easier climbing and multipitches.

Where To Stay:

Sleeping in the train station is no longer allowed. There is a nearby refugio in Cellers which enables walking to the climbing. Hotel Terradets is also in Cellers but is rather expensive. If you are willing to drive 30 minutes each day there are nice places to rent in nearby villages.

History:

Actually Terradets is known for it's hard sports routes in the Paret de les Bruixes, but this is an historic place, a major symbol of other times, the eighties, when the objective were the long climbs, clearly more difficult than the older ones (but easy for today), which made necessary the bolting from above, for the first time in Spain (1980).

The first route (of all the non-Pyrenees area...) was set in 1959, following a not much attractive line, but the possible one. It didn't have much "calling effect". The zone had to wait until the beginnig of the 70s to be interesting, and in that time some routes were set following the cracks, corners, and dihedrals, with much aid climbing. The jewel of that time is the CADE (a section of a club), today maybe the most polished route in Spain...

But this wall (Baggases wall) had a little problem... the rock is very compact and there is a lack of good cracks for gear (at least for the gear available is Spain)... and the solution was a bit revolutionary and polemic...the bolting from above!

In a few years, the wall was filled with a lot of routes bolted from above in the range 6a-6c, becoming one of the milestones at that time. As a counterpart, very few new routes from 1995 or so.

Behind this wall, there is another one with a history a bit different, here the rock offers more possibilities for aid climbing or mixed climbing, so the routes were opened from below, is the classic way, up to A4+, basically in the '80's.

After that, in the 90s, the sports routes were developed, that have given a new name to this zone. Actually, new routes are added to the walls that were a bit forgotten in ancient times.

Summary:

Approach:

» There are two possible approaches, from the north or the south. If travelling from the north along the N332 pass Calpe and then turn in to the Maryvilla complex (this is a no-left-turn so pass the junc-tion and turn back north at the lay-by around the bend). Once in the Maryvilla follow the road and take all the right turns which are signposted to Castellet de Calp. Park near the rough track entrance (next to a villa) and then follow this wide track which heads towards the Castellet (3 or 4 minutes). This joins up with the other approach. Alternatively when travelling from the south on the N332, take the turning into the Mascrat complex. Follow the road to the base and pass the gorge the take the turning onto the new road that leads upwards to the Castellet and the Toix ridge. At the top park at the turning point and find the path leading around to the north face. The path is marked by a number of cairns and takes a couple of minutes to reach Cueva Pequeña. Pass the black tree and reach the edge of the face close to a electricity pylon. Follow the path down and either climb over two large boulders or skirt these by going right. The Sector Cueva Pequeña is above you. Use the fixed rope to assist you in gaining the cave. Sector Cueva Grande is across to the right at the same level. For the central wall follow the path down the hillside, initially away from the walls then back to them—allow 5 minutes approach time. «

Long/Lat: -0.052093, 38.756029

Description:

The cliff currently provides over 40 routes on excellent rock and offers many classic high quality routes throughout the grades, comparable with the best in the Costa Blanca region. Further new routes are being added all the time and this guide will be updated to reflect these. The cliff forms a bay with wings on either side. The continuation of the crag to the left leads it’s sister crag Murla. Most of the developments are currently situated on the left and right sides of the central bay, although the middle section is now receiving more attention. The left side is typically slabby or vertical walls on perfect smooth pocketed limestone. The central and right sides are steeper with sharp- er rock – but again with many good pockets and tufas.

Approach:

Travel north from Calpe along the N332 towards Benisa and take the turning to Jalon (Xalon). From Jalon take the by-pass to Alcalali. At the T-junction turn left and immediately take the right turning sign posted to Orba. The crag is 2 km further along just after leaving the village, above the sharp bend and is easily visible. There is sufficient parking for 2 or 3 cars on the bend off of the road but other cars can be left in the drainage gutter at the side of the road. When this is full park carefully on the side of the road. Walk up the paths from the corner to either the left or right to reach the base of the routes.

Long/Lat: -3.844029, 43.097614

Description:

Nice little bouldering spot, offering some excellent high quality blocks of nicely textured dark sandstone. Located at over 1000m altitude, therefore perfect for hot summer days. Unluckily it can be quite polluted with cow and horse dung (and cattle and horses as well).

The crag is covered by the topo guide "Santa Gadea Y+"

Access Issues:

Do not disturb the cattle & park your car in a way that the farmers can easily pass.

Sport, Deep Water and other styles

Long/Lat: 2.949650, 39.594213

Unique Features And Strengths:

Beautiful limestone climbing on countless larger and smaller crags and deepwater spots.

Description:

A handy guidebook comes from www.rockfax.com. This site also hosts a well-mantained database and PDF-guides, some free.

Where To Stay:

As a popular tourist destination, Mallorca boasts a plethora of accomodation sites. However, don't expect to find something without booking in advance: during high-season, crowds of tourists have already occupied most places and during off-season, many hotels close completely. Booking a finca in the country can be done via the internet for reasonable prices almost in every corner of the island. Camping is difficult: as there are only one or two official camping sites, and wild camping is tricky (everything is steep, stony, fenced-off or all of these), think twice.
