1.1.14. Tenmile Swimming Hole, Clear Creek 6 routes in Crag

Summary:
All Deep Water

Long/Lat: -123.544610, 41.736273

Unique Features And Strengths:

A beautiful swimming and kayaking destination, Clear Creek also boasts fantastic deep water solo problems on solid polished rock.

Description:

You might recognize this place -- the craggy slot is beautifully painted on the sign welcoming visitors to the town of Happy Camp. Crystal clear water courses through a narrow slot of polished rock. In spring the melting snow turns the creek into a challenging destination for kayakers. In summer the flow settles out and the water loses some of its chill, attracting swimmers and cliff jumpers looking to escape the heat. It's also a fantastic bouldering destination.

Access Issues:

Part of the Klamath National Forest. This area is a regional treasure -- tread lightly and leave no trace.

Approach:

Take highway 96 to FR 16N10, located some 7 miles southwest of Happy Camp and just upriver from the Wingate river access. Follow signs to Clear Creek Trail, which should take you along FR 16N10 for 1.6 miles. Turn right on FR 15N32. After 5.3 miles, turn right and drive one mile to the NoMans trailhead. A pit toilet can be found at the trailhead, so go before you go! From parking, it's an easy 1 mile hike to the swimming and climbing. Keep an eye out for poison oak and rattlesnakes.

Where To Stay:

The Klamath National Forest offers abundant car and backcountry camping options, including a camping spot just 0.1 mile past the swimming area. Happy Camp offers a motel and RV accommodations.

1.10.2. Santee Boulder Field 108 routes in Crag

Summary:
Mostly Boulder

Long/Lat: -117.021770, 32.850360

Unique Features And Strengths:

Bring your impeccable footwork - you'll need it on the slabs, thin faces, and occasional mantel and crack problem that cover these granitic boulders.

Description:

Two hillsides with scattered granite boulders up to 40' tall hold 200+ boulder problems from easy to hard.

Generally the problems tend towards slabby and thin. Many of the boulders have flat landings, and easy walk-offs, so it is very reasonable to boulder solo, even without a pad. Also, since the boulders are obvious and easy to find, it is comfortable to just wander around looking for bits to climb, without bothering to have or bring any sort of guide.

In fact, most of the "problems" don't have names, just descriptions. "Center of the slab" or "crack on the right". Grades also tend to vary, but have always traditionally used the YDS system, rather than the V-grades more common for boulders. And, given how long this area has been climbed, most any start, variation, or possibility you spot will probably have been tried by someone already. This does make any listing of problems a bit odd, since most anywhere you can vary the start, the middle, the finish, or the sequence to make things harder or easier.

Access Issues:

Land is privately owned by large developers, but no signs are in place restricting access. Tagging and littering are common issues and groups including Allied Climbers of San Diego regularly hold clean-ups.

Approach:

Park at West Hills Park across Mast Blvd. and CAREFULLY cross the street to the boulders. The boulder field will be completely obvious from the parking lot, and from the street.

Where To Stay:

This is an urban crag and unlikely to be someone's destination unless they're local.

Ethic:

Be sure to wipe dirt from your shoes before climbing to reduce the polishing of footholds. Chipping is unacceptable.

History:

The Santee Boulders have long been a training ground for local climbers. Climbing interest in the Santee Boulders grew in the '70s and '80s with few problems remaining unclimbed after those decades.
