Summary:
Sport and Trad

Long/Lat: -91.757308, 35.665467

Unique Features And Strengths:

Moderate sport climbing on good Arkansas sandstone.

Access Issues:

The Climbing area is on the Jamestown Wildlife Management Area. The last section of the road in is leased to a logging company. While you can pass through, be careful not to park beyond the orange gate beyond nightfall. It's not known when the gate may be locked or unlocked, so it's best to park before it (again watching for logging trucks and avoiding them).

Approach:

From the intersection of Hwy 167 and Hwy 230, take Hwy 230 west for 5 miles. Take a left (south) on Jamestown Loop Rd. Continue on Jamestown Loop Rd for 3 and a bit miles and turn right on an unmarked dirt road just past a Jametown W.M.A sign. Follow the road for 2 miles to hit the cliffs (but be wary of the Access issues).

Where To Stay:

Motels in Batesville. Camping is allowed in the W.M.A. areas, but be sure to park outside the orange gate and off the road as logging trucks will use it at times.

After a sharp turn in the road just past Zion Church Cemetery, you will pass Trigg Tower Road on the right (do not turn on trigg tower road). Take a Right turn onto the gravel road just before the first farmhouse on the right. keep on this road for a few miles and you will find a parking area, further down there are parking options on various pull offs on the side of the road.

Where To Stay:

Camping around parking area for the crag.

History:

Much information listed here can be found in Vertical Heartland, A Rock Climber's Guide to Southern Illinois (3rd Ed) by Eric Ulner. However, that book is grossly out of date and there are many new climbs only kept track of by the local climbers.

Approach:

Park under the IN-37 overpass at the Harrodsburg exit. A trail begins at the bottom on the west side of IN-37 and the north side of Monroe Dam Rd. Continue up the steep hillside until you are above the road (to your right), and Unlikely Wall will be on your left.

1.15.2. Picture Rocks Park 26 routes in Crag

Summary:
All Unknown

Long/Lat: -91.083167, 42.206533

Unique Features And Strengths:

The park has about 50 bolted climbs on overhanging pocketed Devonian Limestone. The bulk of the climbs are in the 5.10-5.11 range, which makes the crag moderate by Iowa Standards. Also, it has been recently rebolted, so the bolts are fresh, and because it is heavily climbed there is the minimum amount of loose choss. Pictured Rocks is a good choice for people who are just getting into sport climbing, or who want to get out and catch a quick pump.

Classic Routes include Tarzan, Virgin Lemonade, Superfly and Flash.

Description:

Follow the signs for Camp Courageous, off of 38s south of Monticello Iowa. Keep going past the camp and down the road into the park. The climbs are for the most part located off of the well developed trail that departs on the other side of the picnic shelter.

Access Issues:

The land is owned by the state of Iowa as a hunting preserved, but they have handed over administration of the land to the Jones County Conservation Board. There is a bolting committee that is trusted with making sure the hardware is in good condition.

Approach:

The climbs are for the most part close to the parking lot and easy to find. The two exceptions are Chicago wall that is around the other side of the bluff leading up to the boat ramp, and Windy Point which is a 20 minute walk north along the top of the bluffs.

Where To Stay:

You can no longer camp in the park, however, there are camp sites at other parks in Jones County.

Ethic:

Pictured Rocks is a very heavily used park, that is popular for trout fishing, canoeing, deer hunting, picnicking and hiking. Be nice to people you meet, and clean up after yourself. The Jones County Parks people have been accommodating to us, so be a good citizen in return.

In Iowa, we don't drape ropes off of everything that we want to climb, as the scene is not crowded, and you rarely have to wait. If you are going to top rope a route several times, and it is equipped with sport shuts, hang your own draws to minimize wear and tear on the hardware. :)

Finally, stay on the established trails, don't do things that will kill trees like wrapping webbing on them that will damage the bark. The rangers don't want you slacklining.

History:

Pictured Rocks was probably the first sport crag developed in Iowa. Most of the development took place in the 1990's. The only printed guide to the area was Sean Kinzel's "Wild Iowa" guide book.

Description:

An outcropping of quartz monzonite with a box canyon in it, a short distance south-east of Las Vegas.

Another reasonable alternative to Red Rocks if there's rain.

Access Issues:

Climbers share the cliffs with petroglyphs. Take care to climb well away from the glyphs, to not harm them, and to not do anything that would cause the BLM to ban or restrict climbing.

Approach:

About 16 miles from the US 93/95 split along US 95, look for a left-turn onto a small gravel road across the desert. Head up this about 2 miles, until you get to a set of powerlines. Turn right on the 2nd power line road. Follow this for about 2 miles, then turn left on a road up to the (now obvious) canyon and cliffs.

Ethic:

Strong ground-up trad ethic, bolting frowned on.

Unique Features And Strengths:

These are volcanic necks occurring on the southeast and west portions of the San Juan Basin

Description:

The San Juan Basin covers the northwest portion of New Mexico north of I-20.

Access Issues:

Most of this area is on the Navajo Reservation. Many potential climbs are on "Sacred Lands" and supposedly off limits. Some can be accessed with permission because there are different levels of sacredness involved. Getting permission can be a time consuming activity. Cabezon has a high class 3 hike up the backside, is on BLM property, and needs no permission.

Long/Lat: -74.381490, 43.911773

Unique Features And Strengths:

Huge state park with lots of rock, from easily approachable to back country.

Description:

Adirondack state park is the largest state in the contiguous 48 states, and covers some 6.1 million acres of land in north-eastern New York state. There is climbing scattered throughout the park, but the concentration is greatest in the north-east centered around Keene.

The guidebook for the area is Adirondack Rock: A Rock Climber's Guide by Jim Lawyer and Jeremy Haas. This is an excellent and exhaustive guide to the climbing in the park. They also supply excellent ongoing support on their website, http://www.adirondackrock.com/ . Along with errata, they supply PDFs of the topos for most of the larger cliffs so you don't have to photocopy or rip-out the topos for the multi-pitch climbs, as well as updates on new development (e.g. some 145 routes on 15 cliffs in the Silver Lake and Potter mountain areas).

Approach:

Varies from cliff to cliff and crag to crag. At the short end, e.g. "Chapel Pond Slab" it is about a minute -- and most people rack up at their car. At the long end, with some of the back-country cliffs, you would be looking at several hours to a day for the approach. And, some cliffs have water approaches.

Where To Stay:

Camping in the park is one option -- groups of up to 10 people can camp anywhere as long as it is more than 150ft from a road, water path, or trail. Camping is allowed up to 3 days without a permit, and no more than 2 weeks at any one location even with a permit (available by phone from the Forest Ranger Office.)

There are, also, numerous small towns throughout the park, and this is holiday and cottage country. So, there are also numerous hotels and motels at various levels of fancy -- especially in the Lake Placid area -- as well as cottage rentals around.

1.34.2. Crowder's Mountain State Park 138 routes in Crag

Mostly Unknown

Long/Lat: -81.273294, 35.234987

Description:

Crowders Mountain is a state park located in western North Carolina. In fact, it's not too far from South Carolina. The rock is of a quartzite that is similar to the rock found around the state. Its easy approach and proximity to Charlotte make Crowders a popular place on the weekends, and not just for climbers (which leads some locals to call the place "Crowded" Mountain).

The rock quality is pretty good and offers something for everyone. There are numerous top-roping opportunities as well as sport and trad with ratings ranging from 5.5 to 5.13. Cliffs generally face east or west, so finding sun or shade is pretty easy (depending on the time of day), though the thick foliage can make finding sun more difficult.

Lambert and Shull's Selected Climbs in North Carolina is a great book for the area; however, it is not comprehensive. There is plenty to do here, however, since it's easy to top-rope quite a bit.

Access Issues:

Keep in mind, this is a state park. Permits are required for climbing and rangers regularly visit the crags and check up on climbers. Permits are free and easy to fill out, so please do this to avoid hassles. Also, there is a gate that opens and closes daily. Please be aware of the time and make sure you leave before closing time.

Approach:

Crowders Mountain is about 30 miles west of Charlotte.

Take I-85 to Exit 13 and make a left off the exit. After this, it depends on where you want to climb. Directions are different for the Hidden Wall and the rest of the areas. Please go to the respective areas to find directions to them.

Ethic:

Top rope, trad, some sport.

1.34.6. Linville Gorge 101 routes in Crag

Summary:
Trad, Unknown and other styles

Long/Lat: -81.901090, 35.879109

Description:

Linville Gorge features long, easy multi pitch trad climbing. Beware however the runouts on some of the easier climbs such as Peek-A-Boo at Table Rock. Most climbing is off vertical, while not exactly slab, have your friction climbing skills dialled.

Access Issues:

Beware that the gate at the base of the paved road is sometimes shut. As of Mar 2014, it is closed so you have quite a long walk up the winding switchback road to get to the start of the approach trail. I think it is opening again in April.

Falcons nest in this area, and seasonal closures are common. Check for current closures before you go.

Approach:

To get here, on google maps navigate to: "Ginger Cake Rd and Table Rock Rd, Newland, NC".

Once you are here, follow Table Rock Road (dirt road) up until you see a turn off to the right to Table Rock Parking area.

Warning: If you google Table Rock and try get there like that, you will come to a dead end on Table Rock Road from certain directions.

The dirt road turns into a very steep, paved road with switchbacks up to the carpark at the base of Table Rock Mountain. The climbers trail is marked on Google Maps.

Where To Stay:

There is quite nice, but primitive camping all along the road to table rock.

Ethic:

Predominantly trad with bolted anchors, but some of the more popular climbs at Table Rock have bolts as well as gear. Don't put any more bolts in please, but some of the bolts could use replacing if you know what you are doing.

1.34.9. Looking Glass 69 routes in Crag

Summary:
Mostly Trad

Long/Lat: -82.785791, 35.297683

Description:

Located near Brevard, Looking Glass has a huge range of climbing opportunities. Aid climbers will find grade IV and V lines reminiscent of Yosemite on the North Side; free trad climbers flock to the famous "eyebrows" of the Nose Area and Sun Wall.

Route development on Looking Glass granite began in the mid-60s, with signature routes like The Nose. The area was little-known except among the locals in the early days; pioneers of the day included Steve Longenecker, Jim McEver and especially Bob Mitchell. The mid-70s brought another wave of first ascents and more notice from outside the area; over the next decade or so, routes were put up by climbers like Jeep Gaskin, Bob Rotert, Monty Reagan, Whitney Heuermann, Diff Ritchie and Chis Caldwell.

Climbing at Looking Glass is best during the fall and winter months. The North Side and Hidden Wall sections are shady enough for summer climbing. Because it's located in the Pisgah National Forest, camping is plentiful in the area.

Approach:

Looking Glass is located near Brevard, NC. Take US 276 northeast from Brevard into Pisgah National Forest, then continue about five miles to the intersection with FR 475; take a left here. After a few miles on 475, the road turns to gravel and splits. Take the right fork and look for a parking lot with the sign for Slickrock Falls Trail. This is parking for the South Side area of Looking Glass; for the Nose Area and Sun Wall, continue almost two miles further to the Sunwall Trail parking lot. Parking for the North Side and Hidden Wall is in a pullout roughly a quarter-mile past the Sunwall Trail.

1.34.21. Rumbling Bald 31 routes in Crag

Long/Lat: -82.215173, 35.454996

Description:

With all the breakfast-sounding names associated with Rumbling Bald (Hickory Nut Gorge, Cereal Buttress, Frosted Flake), you might think the place was a theme park dreamed up by General Mills. In fact, Rumbling Bald is an excellent winter climbing destination in North Carolina, featuring a mix of granite/gneiss crack and friction climbs, trad and sport styles.

Approach:

Rumbling Bald is located just outside the town of Chimney Rock. From points west (Asheville, etc.), pick up US 74A and go east to where 74A combines with US 64 and SR 9 near Bat Cave. From points east (Charlotte), exit I-85 south of Charlotte for Kings Mountain and US 74; follow 74 west to Forest City and veer off on US 74A west to Bat Cave.

From Bat Cave, follow the signs for Chimney Rock Park and pass the park entrance as you go through the town of Chimney Rock. Not quite a half mile past the park, turn left on Boys Camp Road (SR 1305). Follow this for about a mile and a half to a dirt access road on the left; take the dirt road to one of two parking areas for Rumbling Bald.

Where To Stay:

Camping is not allowed at Rumbling Bald, but there are private campgrounds nearby in the Chimney Rock area. The town also hosts B&Bs and motels for those not wanting to camp, along with good places to eat along the scenic Broad River. And if you get bored with climbing, you can join the tourists across the river at Chimney Rock Park (there is actually climbing in this state-owned park, but only if you hire an authorized guide service).

Ethic:

Everything goes here, there are bolted routes, traditional routes, mixed routes and bouldering.

History:

The history of climbing here is a little hazy, but the first ascents were apparently done in the early 1970s in what’s now known as the Flakeview Area. In the mid-70s, route development began at the Cereal Buttress, with first ascents like Shredded Wheat being made by Jeep Gaskin. Other RB pioneers include Grover Cable, Don Hunley and Sean and Shane Cobourn. The 80s were a time of big growth at areas like Hanging Chain Wall; the 5.12b route of the same name was at one time the hardest line in North Carolina.

In the 90s, Rumbling Bald was closed for several years due to access issues with neighboring landowners. In the late 90s, however, the crag was reopened, with bouldering gaining a predominant popularity among climbers. Most recently, Sean Cobourn and partners have been busy exploring and establishing new routes on Rumbling Bald's north face. At present, land purchases by the Carolina Climbers Coalition, combined with state plans for a Hickory Nut Gorge State Park, make the outlook excellent for continued access.

Description:

Birdsboro Quarry like the name says is an inactive quarry just south of Birdsboro with 100+ Sport Routes from 5.5 to 5.14. The area was developed originally by Bob Perna and friends and is now maintained by Ted Coffelt and the locals. Ted has put up a lot of new routes and is still going strong.

Access Issues:

Birdsboro Quarry sits in the heart of Hay Creek Water Shed. This area is a protected water source for the surrounding homes and businesses. Please use all Grey Water and Leave No Trace guidelines. The use of this area is a privilege; we all must protect and maintain all climbs and trails leading to and from.

Approach:

From 422, take 345 south to Birdsboro, at the intersection of 724 continue straight on Furnace Street (becomes Haycreek Road) until the road closes. Park in the stone lot and hike along the closed Haycreek Road to the climbing area (approximately 10 minuets). Requires crossing a shallow creek twice. Either wade trough the creek or a two wire walk across is available at both crossings.

Description:

Visit SafeHarborClimbing.com and join the SH climbers’ Facebook page for further updates and to help with upcoming projects and fundraisers (for parking improvements, information kiosk, and anchor replacement). Please email route comments, corrections, etc. to: Eric@SafeHarborClimbing.com

Access Issues:

It sure was a long and winding road, but after a 15-year closure some of the crags at Safe Harbor have re-opened to climbers! Currently only the southern crags are open, but there’s a good chance the northern areas (home of the highest climbs) will re-open in 2012. A complete guidebook will be published once all the crags are open to climbers—until then, I hope you will find this mini-guide helpful in your visits to the SH south crags this winter.

The Safe Harbor “north” crags remain closed, but may re-open next year.

Approach:

From the village of Safe Harbor, travel River Road south to Green Hill Road. Take Green Hill, continuing past a few turns, and park on either side of the tunnel; be sure not to block the road. (On busy days, it may be possible to park one line of cars inside the tunnel.) Locate a climbers’ trail, beginning from the uphill side of the tunnel, and follow it for 150 yards to gain the rail trail. Turn right and hike for about 10 minutes to reach the Blood Sugar Magic sector. The other sectors are another 5 to 15 minutes—you will come upon them in the order detailed below. Climb safe, harbor only good thoughts, and have fun!

There is no access via Brenner Hollow Road—do not park here! Please car pool—there is limited parking near the tunnel. Green Hill Road turns into a rocky one-lane road, so drive slowly.

Ethic:

FIXED ANCHORS – Climb at your own risk! Some of the bolts at Safe Harbor are more than 20 years old, although many of the more popular routes have been upgraded to stainless steel hardware (an ongoing project). While the majority of bolts are likely trustworthy, you must still be vigilant and assess every bolt/anchor you clip. Please toprope through quick draws and not through rings or chains!

OVERGROWN/DIRTY ROUTES – While the more popular routes are in relatively good condition, many climbs are dirty and to some degree overgrown with grass, weeds, or vines. Consider doing a little “cleaning” of the routes you get on (use a nut tool to clean dirt from cracks and pockets). Watch for loose rock–there’s a lot of this at Safe Harbor–but be careful not to pry off important handholds.

FUNDRAISING & SWEAT EQUITY- In addition to fixed anchor replacement, we need to install an information kiosk, as well as develop improved parking. An Access Fund “matching grant” looks likely for next Spring, and so we (the climbing community) must raise as much $$ as we can this winter. I will soon install a PayPal “donate button” on the SHC web site, and I hope to schedule fundraising events at nearby rock gyms this winter. Join the Safe Harbor Facebook group to get involved.

WALK THE TALK - We all know that climbers are generally positive, proactive, kind folks and as a national community climbers are held in high regard by most land managers. I have no doubt that local land managers (and residents) will similarly come to recognize our values and virtues as recreational users. Toward this end, here are a few things to keep in mind: Leave the crags and parking area cleaner than you find them; be friendly to passing hikers and share your passion for climbing; obey the dawnto-dusk guidelines (no camping!); drive slowly and park in a way that will not affect traffic flow.

From Chattanooga, head west on I-24 past Nickajack Lake and get off at exit 155 (about 20 miles). Head north following the signs to the town of Jasper. Passing through the town, follow the signs for TN150/US41 north toward Tracy City. A landmark (at least for now, since its out of business) is the Mountain Mart on the left as you continue on TN150. 1.46. Vermont 494 routes in Region

Summary:
Trad, Sport and other styles

Long/Lat: -72.639442, 44.046876

Description:

Until recently, climbing in Vermont was mostly undocumented -- there was no published guide or information. Sandwiched between the 'Dacks to the west and New Hampshire to the east, the Green Mountains of Vermont got very little in the way of climbing. The rock didn't help -- much of it soft schist which promoted the growth of greenery very strongly.

With the publication of Tough Schist: Rock Climbing in Northern Vermont by Travis Peckham, some of the climbing has now been documented. (Available from http://www.vermontrock.com/ .) Like any guide book, it is of course incomplete and inaccurate -- but it gives for more information in a publicly accessible format than has previously been available.

Long/Lat: -79.367611, 38.833914

Unique Features And Strengths:

Idyllic setting in the gorgeous West Virgina hill country. Secluded, yet popular, this crag leaves a lasting impression with all its climbing visitors.

Description:

Steep routes on great rock. One to four-pitch (most routes are 2-3 pitches), predominantly trad-protected climbs. Climbing varies, but typically includes 90-degree right/left facing corners with crack between face and corner, vertical finger-to-hand size cracks, and face climbing between ledges. Fore warned is fore armed! Seneca difficulty ratings ARE sandbagged. Understand that most 5.7 and above at Seneca requires significant trad experience, including good gear placement, rope management, and a cool head on steep, exposed rock. Some 5.8s and 5.9s at Seneca are rightfully considered quite serious, and are thought of as 5.10s relative to other crags.

Access Issues:

Access is free to the public and only restricted due to weather. April through October are typically warm enough, but frequent rain is an issue.

1.48.6. Franklin Gorge 98 routes in Crag

Summary:
Sport, Unknown and Trad

Long/Lat: -79.322003, 38.666496

Description:

Located entirely on PRIVATE LAND, single pitch, mostly sport, some mixed & trad.

Access Issues:

All known routes at Franklin are located on PRIVATE LAND, and therefor, access should not be taken for granted. Keeping a low profile is of utmost importance. The landowner & his family hunt on the plateau above the routes, so please apprise yourself of the State & Local hunting seasons, and act accordingly.

Approach:

Your typical Potomac Highlands approach: Short & Steep. Staying on the trail is imperative, as even a slight mis-step causes a good bit of negative impact. Always remember that a hillside trail is much stronger on the uphill edge, and much weaker on the downhill edge. Approach times are from 10 seconds to about 15 minutes.

Where To Stay:

Brandywine Recreational Area, Thorn Springs Campground, Star Hotel, Thompson's Motel

Ethic:

Dogs are not welcome (PRIVATE LAND), Leave No Trace, stay on trails, you-damage-trail-you-fix-it-NOW, no trundling onto road, no Quick-Links, no tick marks, clean up your chalk, clean up your tape, no chipping, no theft, no defacement, use camouflaged hardware, inspect & replace worn carabiners, respect red tags, respect hunters & hunting seasons, no top-roping through fixed gear, etc., etc.

History:

Sport climbing is known to have come to Franklin in the early 1990's, by then Harrisonburg local John Burcham. Other key developers are believed to be: Eddie & Tracy Begoon, Howard Clark, George Powell, Darrel Hensley, & Mike Artz, along with various others. Later & continued development was brought by Michael Fisher & Michael Gray. Later development at the River's Bend area is believed to be by Matthew Fanning, Matthew Behrins, Sam Powell, et.al.
