Summary:
?,Trad and other styles

Long/Lat: -115.495291, 36.130760

Description:

World class climbing on Aztec Sandstone just 20 minutes from Las Vegas. The climbing varies from 2200ft massive multi-pitch trad routes to 45ft single pitch sport routes with something for everyone. Expect the popular and accessible classics to be busy but worth the effort.

1.6.3. Keyhole Canyon 3 routes in Crag

Summary:
Top Rope,Trad

Long/Lat: -114.926111, 35.713378

Description:

An outcropping of quartz monzonite with a box canyon in it, a short distance south-east of Las Vegas.

Another reasonable alternative to Red Rocks if there's rain.

Access Issues:

Climbers share the cliffs with petroglyphs. Take care to climb well away from the glyphs, to not harm them, and to not do anything that would cause the BLM to ban or restrict climbing.

Approach:

About 16 miles from the US 93/95 split along US 95, look for a left-turn onto a small gravel road across the desert. Head up this about 2 miles, until you get to a set of powerlines. Turn right on the 2nd power line road. Follow this for about 2 miles, then turn left on a road up to the (now obvious) canyon and cliffs.

Ethic:

Strong ground-up trad ethic, bolting frowned on.

Also, it has been recently rebolted, so the bolts are fresh, and because it is heavily climbed there is the minimum amount of loose choss. Pictured Rocks is a good choice for people who are just getting into sport climbing, or who want to get out and catch a quick pump.

Classic Routes include Tarzan, Virgin Lemonade, Superfly and Flash.

Description:

Follow the signs for Camp Courageous, off of 38s south of Monticello Iowa. Keep going past the camp and down the road into the park. The climbs are for the most part located off of the well developed trail that departs on the other side of the picnic shelter.

Access Issues:

The land is owned by the state of Iowa as a hunting preserved, but they have handed over administration of the land to the Jones County Conservation Board. There is a bolting committee that is trusted with making sure the hardware is in good condition.

Approach:

The climbs are for the most part close to the parking lot and easy to find. The two exceptions are Chicago wall that is around the other side of the bluff leading up to the boat ramp, and Windy Point which is a 20 minute walk north along the top of the bluffs.

Where To Stay:

You can no longer camp in the park, however, there are camp sites at other parks in Jones County.

Ethic:

Pictured Rocks is a very heavily used park, that is popular for trout fishing, canoeing, deer hunting, picnicking and hiking. Be nice to people you meet, and clean up after yourself. The Jones County Parks people have been accommodating to us, so be a good citizen in return.

In Iowa, we don't drape ropes off of everything that we want to climb, as the scene is not crowded, and you rarely have to wait. If you are going to top rope a route several times, and it is equipped with sport shuts, hang your own draws to minimize wear and tear on the hardware. :)

Finally, stay on the established trails, don't do things that will kill trees like wrapping webbing on them that will damage the bark. The rangers don't want you slacklining.

History:

Pictured Rocks was probably the first sport crag developed in Iowa. Most of the development took place in the 1990's. The only printed guide to the area was Sean Kinzel's "Wild Iowa" guide book.

Description:

Birdsboro Quarry like the name says is an inactive quarry just south of Birdsboro with 100+ Sport Routes from 5.5 to 5.14. The area was developed originally by Bob Perna and friends and is now maintained by Ted Coffelt and the locals. Ted has put up a lot of new routes and is still going strong.

Access Issues:

Birdsboro Quarry sits in the heart of Hay Creek Water Shed. This area is a protected water source for the surrounding homes and businesses. Please use all Grey Water and Leave No Trace guidelines. The use of this area is a privilege; we all must protect and maintain all climbs and trails leading to and from.

Approach:

From 422, take 345 south to Birdsboro, at the intersection of 724 continue straight on Furnace Street (becomes Haycreek Road) until the road closes. Park in the stone lot and hike along the closed Haycreek Road to the climbing area (approximately 10 minuets). Requires crossing a shallow creek twice. Either wade trough the creek or a two wire walk across is available at both crossings.

Unique Features And Strengths:

Idyllic setting in the gorgeous West Virgina hill country. Secluded, yet popular, this crag leaves a lasting impression with all its climbing visitors.

Description:

Steep routes on great rock. One to four-pitch (most routes are 2-3 pitches), predominantly trad-protected climbs. Climbing varies, but typically includes 90-degree right/left facing corners with crack between face and corner, vertical finger-to-hand size cracks, and face climbing between ledges. Fore warned is fore armed! Seneca difficulty ratings ARE sandbagged. Understand that most 5.7 and above at Seneca requires significant trad experience, including good gear placement, rope management, and a cool head on steep, exposed rock. Some 5.8s and 5.9s at Seneca are rightfully considered quite serious, and are thought of as 5.10s relative to other crags.

Access Issues:

Access is free to the public and only restricted due to weather. April through October are typically warm enough, but frequent rain is an issue.

1.39.6. Franklin Gorge 98 routes in Crag

Summary:
Sport,? and Trad

Long/Lat: -79.322003, 38.666496

Description:

Located entirely on PRIVATE LAND, single pitch, mostly sport, some mixed & trad.

Access Issues:

All known routes at Franklin are located on PRIVATE LAND, and therefor, access should not be taken for granted. Keeping a low profile is of utmost importance. The landowner & his family hunt on the plateau above the routes, so please apprise yourself of the State & Local hunting seasons, and act accordingly.

Approach:

Your typical Potomac Highlands approach: Short & Steep. Staying on the trail is imperative, as even a slight mis-step causes a good bit of negative impact. Always remember that a hillside trail is much stronger on the uphill edge, and much weaker on the downhill edge. Approach times are from 10 seconds to about 15 minutes.

Where To Stay:

Brandywine Recreational Area, Thorn Springs Campground, Star Hotel, Thompson's Motel

Ethic:

Dogs are not welcome (PRIVATE LAND), Leave No Trace, stay on trails, you-damage-trail-you-fix-it-NOW, no trundling onto road, no Quick-Links, no tick marks, clean up your chalk, clean up your tape, no chipping, no theft, no defacement, use camouflaged hardware, inspect & replace worn carabiners, respect red tags, respect hunters & hunting seasons, no top-roping through fixed gear, etc., etc.

History:

Sport climbing is known to have come to Franklin in the early 1990's, by then Harrisonburg local John Burcham. Other key developers are believed to be: Eddie & Tracy Begoon, Howard Clark, George Powell, Darrel Hensley, & Mike Artz, along with various others. Later & continued development was brought by Michael Fisher & Michael Gray. Later development at the River's Bend area is believed to be by Matthew Fanning, Matthew Behrins, Sam Powell, et.al.

Description:

An often overlooked area, with excellent adventure climbing opportunities, as well as a few classic sport climbs. Climbing could be compared to Seneca, Nelson, & Champe Rocks. Some two pitch routes exist. Aging pitons, RURPS, etc. suggest a long history of climbing.

1.39.15. Reed's Creek 33 routes in Crag

Summary:
Mostly Sport
Access Issues:

Minimal parking, with a short road hike, and a good High Speed Trail system. Located on public lands, in the National Forest. Generations of locals have hunted game here, so apprise yourself of hunting seasons & regulations, and be respectful of other user groups. Please note that the plateau above the routes is PRIVATE LAND, and the land owner does not permit encroachment of any sort.

Approach:

A typical Potomac Highlands approach, short & steep. Staying on the trail is imperative, as even a slight mis-step causes a good bit of negative impact. Always remember that a hillside trail is much stronger on the uphill edge, and much weaker on the downhill edge.

Ethic:

Leave No Trace, stay on trails, you-damage-trail-you-fix-it-NOW, no trundling onto road, no Quick-Links, no tick marks, clean up your chalk, clean up your tape, no chipping, no theft, no defacement, use camouflaged hardware, inspect & replace worn carabiners, respect red tags, walk on the left side of the road, respect hunters & hunting seasons, no top-roping through fixed gear, etc., etc.

Approach:

Climbing sites begin downstream of Overlook #2 and end near the emergency boat ramp at Sandy Landing. No climbing is permitted in the historic canal cut. Routes range in length from 25 to 75 feet. Difficulty ranges from 5.0 up to the highest rated climbs at 5.14. Most of the routes are in the 5.5 to 5.9 range. All climbing is top-rope and no anchors may be drilled into the rock. Bring enough anchor material to have two independent anchor systems and allow about thirty feet of material from the edge to your anchor and you will be set to move to almost every climbing area in the park. The majority of the climbs are accessible via a walk down route except during periods of high water, above 4.5 on the Little Falls gauge. The river gauge reading is reported in the weather section of the Washington Post under the title 'River Stages.'

Where To Stay:

No camping available. Hotels very close.

Ethic:

Absolutely no bolting. Please use white, grey or brown chalk.

Long/Lat: -85.681315, 35.178316

Description:

Foster Falls is a premier sport climbing destination in the South. The climbing is predominantly single pitch, bolted routes of varying styles. Slab, vertical, overhung, dihedrals and roof systems are all available here in a compact area close to camping. There is a small selection of trad climbs but beware of the fractured nature of the blocks, falls onto cams have dislodged large blocks before.

Approach:

From Chattanooga, head west on I-24 past Nickajack Lake and get off at exit 155 (about 20 miles). Head north following the signs to the town of Jasper. Passing through the town, follow the signs for TN150/US41 north toward Tracy City. A landmark (at least for now, since its out of business) is the Mountain Mart on the left as you continue on TN150. The entrance to Foster Falls is on the left about three miles past the Mountain Mart.

From the campsite, walk down the path located behind campsite number 8.
