Calico Basin Red Spring Area Riding Hood Wall
5.9 | ★★ Big Bad Wolf | 67m, 26 | ★★★ Mega Classic
Flew-in from Australia at 1pm, on the rock by 4pm - perfect remedy for jetlag! Great climb with 3 pitches of different character.
Sun 23rd Jul 2017 - Mount Alexandra
The Alcove | ||||||
16 | ★ Fat Like Butter | 9m, 4 | ★ Good
Good climb with steep jugs, shame it's so short
16 | ★ Grounds for Divorce | 9m, 5 | ★★ Very Good
Shame it's so short, good slabbing
Sun 23rd Jul 2017 - Mount Alexandra
Central Area | ||||||
13 | ★ In the Inn of the Sixth Happiness | 20m, 10 | ★ Good
Fun easy climb, might be worth abseiling to protect the rope from wear
15 | ★★ Alpine | 20m, 9 | ★ Good
I'm sure I felt the side pull plate flex at the crux!
Sat 22nd Jul 2017 - Mt Gibraltar
Slab Walls | ||||||
17 | ★★ The Devils Tears | 45m, 16 | ★ Good
Good 1st pitch, 2nd pitch average and currently involves fighting a thorny bush. Crux is probably 2nd bolt? Eventually worked-out the awkward side pull/layback moves & pocket...
18 | ★ Far from the Madding Crowd | 40m, 14 | ★ Good
Climbed in 1 pitch, rope drag fine. Fairly thin section just above the intermediate belay looking like some key underclings have pulled already - need to climb ~1m right of the next 3 bolts
18 | ★ Mittagong Two Step | 35m | ★ Good
Cleaner and more direct finish than Maur I Rompa. You can use a BD cam 0.5 or 0.75 extended with a sling to protect the step-up. I wonder how long the key hollow plate will last at the step-up?
16 | ★★ Gripping Yarn | 95m, 13 | ★★ Very Good
Good climb and well bolted, nice crack to start (shame so short), then nice long slab pitch with bolts placed well at small footholds.
3rd pitch looks pointless from below but actually has 2 or 3 nice moves and is worthwhile. |
Sat 17th Jun 2017 - Blue Mountains
Blackheath Area Bald Head Serendipitous Walls
17 | ★ Keenes Hobble | 65m, 30 | ★ Good
A bit sandy, but nice enough climb. Even though it's the "escape" route from the bottom cliff, I think it's worth a climb in its own right.
Sun 28th May 2017 - Blue Mountains
Mount Victoria Area The Soft Parade The Middle
8 | ★ Who's Bob | 8m, 5 | ★ Good | |||
Good top-rope for beginners
9 | ★ J Meister | 8m, 4 | Average
Good top-rope for beginners
11 | ★ Bob's Breakfast | 8m, 5 | ★ Good
Good top-rope for beginners
Sun 28th May 2017 - Blue Mountains
Mount Victoria Area The Soft Parade The Right Hand End
13 | ★ Zam Zam | 13m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
Easier than it looks from below. The crux is up to 3rd bolt and traverse to unnerving loose large block/flake above. Being lowered from the top would involve plenty of rope grinding, so brought 2nd up and abseiled.
10 | ★ Willow | 8m, 5 | ★ Good | |||
Good top-rope for beginners. Although no other decent options close-by so only useful for small group.
17 | ★★ A Birds Eye On A Bannana Bender | 14m, 8 | ★★ Very Good
Good climb, not too much rope drag considering you do a corkscrew ;o)
15 | ★ Home Run | 12m | Average
Helmet essential for belayer, heaps of loose rocks on shale ledge. Climbed out with full pack, not grade 15, more like 10 or 11.
12 | ★ Frodo The Fearless | 6m | Average
Fine to set a top-rope for beginners. Start on the poor tree ;o)
12 | ★ Frequent Flyers | 8m, 4 | Average
There is a grade 11 or 12 climb here, but not following the line of bolts. From the 2nd clip move left and climb the rest of the route 2m left of the bolt line. Not advised as a top-rope, any fall means a fair swing.
Sat 29th Apr 2017 - Blue Mountains
Blackheath Area Heathcliff
18 | ★ Boadicea | 70m | ★ Good | |||
Morning shade, nice belay ledge. Milarepa is a better finish.
Sat 17th Dec 2016 - El Chalten
La Nueva Escuelita | ||||||
17 6a | ★ Main Wall Bolted 5 | 15m, 6 | ★ Good
Testing side clings for first 2 bolts, then easy up. Awkward to clean again as it wanders so far across at the top.
18 6a | ★ Main Wall Bolted 4 | 20m, 9 | ★ Good
Really enjoyed this. Had a couple of "stop & think" moments at the final test at the scoop before the anchors
18 6a | ★★ Main Wall Bolted 2 | 22m, 9 | ★★ Very Good
Really good climbing. Made me forget all those beautiful mountains behind me, which is the reason we're here. When's the next weather window?
16 5 | ★★ Slab left of main wall 2 | 22m, 7 | Average
A couple of bizarre bolt placements at thigh height on ledges - although maybe this climb is for 5 year olds? Well... it was really windy and I had to cling to the cliff like a small child who didn't want to go to school...
14 4+ | ★ Slab left of main wall 1 | 22m, 6 | Average
Really awkward to clean, should've thought about that and had the second top-rope. We cleaned using a tension abseil, could've lowered the second but was concerned about the rope grating on several edges.
Sat 17th Dec 2016 - El Chalten
Veshcho wall | ||||||
15 5 | ★ Aletita (Slab left of Veshcho Wall 3) | 10m, 6 | ★ Good
I used the big flake thing, but Mel said that was cheating, oops, just like the rules at St Leonards gym ;o) I liked this climb.
13 5+ | ★ Por las tierras de dios (Slab left of Veshcho Wall 2) | 10m, 5 | ★ Good
Rain was blowing-in from the north, moved quick to finish the climb so we could scamper the ~100m back to our hostel ;o)
13 4 | ★ Kinki y Kanka (Slab left of Veshcho Wall 1) | 10m, 5 | Average
Bizarre, 2 anchors at the top. Even more bizarre, I walked-off left so didn't use either!
16 5+ | ★ Mas Comida Mexicana (Far left of Veshcho Wall 2) | 17m, 5 | Average
Cold windy day, climbed in gore-tex and beanie. Had 2 builders at Koonek Hostel watching us.
Thu 15th Dec 2016 - El Chalten
La Nueva Escuelita | ||||||
14 4+ | ★ Slab right of main wall 2 | 16m, 6 | Average
Easy, nice 2m of side clings past 2nd bolt, but rest was forgettable. Pointless 1st bolt, should've been 1m lower to protect scramble, not at knee height on ledge.
18 6a | ★★ Main Wall Bolted 1 | 22m, 10 | ★★★ Classic
Excellent. Balancey slab to start, then steep jugs high up. A proper onsight (well, at least a proper sport onsight?)... found the bolts while going for a walk during a bad weather day, straight back to the hostel to get our gear and up we went.
Sat 3rd Dec 2016 - Blue Mountains
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Pierces Pass Bunny Bucket Buttress and Hotel California Area
18 | ★★★ Bunny Bucket Buttress | 270m | ★★ Very Good
8 pitches of climbing, what's not to like? Although, given the hype and traffic, I was probably expecting a more direct line and higher quality climbing down low, quality upper half on the headwall.
Sun 13th Nov 2016 - Blue Mountains
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Cosmic County Area Cosmic County The 39 Steps
16 | ★ Xerxes | 30m | ★ Good | |||
Start is harder than it looks, well, at least I thought it looked easy, then found out otherwise

Blackheath Area Megalong Valley Crags James Bond Mr Big Area
18 | ★★ Honey Rider | 60m | ★ Good

Faraway Wall | ||||||
14 | Peruvian love Child | 9m, 2 | Average
10 | ★ Sapphire Bullets of Pure Love | 8m | ★ Good
Gotta be harder than 10! Yes, lots of jugs, but getting from the 1st to 2nd bolt is more like a 14?
Sun 1st Nov 2015 - Mt Ku-ring-gai
Moto Cross wall | ||||||
17 | ★ Extinction Never Felt So Good | 10m, 4 | ★ Good
Well bolted, always protected from above.
Sat 17th Oct 2015 - Blue Mountains
Katoomba Area Narrow Neck Rhum Dhu
19 | ★★ Dirty Rotten Pig | 130m | ★★ Very Good
Led P1 & 3. Mel led P2 & 4, P2 certainly the hardest.
Had to walk-in as the top is closed for bush fire regeneration, missed the cliff-line track & bush bashed for 1 hour, Mel not happy, & worse, she got bitten by a leech, oops! Small landslide above P3 anchor which buried the bolts, but I managed to excavate & clear the worst of it. |
Sun 11th Oct 2015 - Blue Mountains
Medlow Bath Reservoir Dogs
18 | ★ Let's Get a Taco | 36m, 12 | ★ Good
Led P2, Mel P1. Nice climb, sure P2 is a little chossy but worth doing once.
Sat 10th Oct 2015 - Blue Mountains
Medlow Bath Reservoir Dogs
15 | ★ I Don't Tip | 36m, 13 | ★ Good
Led P1, Mel P2. Supposed to be a warm-up, but lightening across the Megalong Valley swiftly moving towards us encouraged us to go eat pies in Blackheath instead.
I thought the pitches were more equal grading than 15 & 12? |
Sat 18th Jul 2015 - Mt Ku-ring-gai
Lost & Found Wall | ||||||
17 | ★★ Foundlings | 15m, 6 | ★ Good
Sun 5th Jul 2015 - Point Perpendicular
Thunder Head Solstice Wall
15 | ★ Solstice | 18m, 8 | ★★ Very Good
Good area, once the abseil rope & 2 carrot belay are set, 4 quick routes with amazing exposure & waves crashing beneath.
Sat 13th Jun 2015 - Blue Mountains
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd The Dam Cliffs Creek Boulder
18 | ★ Waterfalling | 15m | ★★ Very Good
Quirky & interesting slab, I enjoyed this more than Envirovandal. Maybe a grade 16 to E's 15? The angle of the boulder has the ironstone ledges just off vertical instead of horizontal.
19 | ★ Enviro Vandal | 12m, 6 | ★ Good
Interesting & enjoyable route. The angle of the boulder has the ironstone ledges just off vertical instead of horizontal. Maybe a 15 or 16?
Sat 13th Jun 2015 - Blue Mountains
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd The Dam Cliffs Steep Wall
16 | ★★ The Sisters of Fatima | 12m, 5 | ★ Good
Jugs down low, didn't realise the route is overhung till being lowered-off and landing 1m out from the cliff.
Sat 13th Jun 2015 - Blue Mountains
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd The Dam Cliffs Mossy Wall
10 | ★ Hesitation | 15m | Average
Down-climbed! A couple of nice routes in this area for 1st time leaders.
18 | ★ Death of the Moss Monster | 15m, 5 | ★ Good
Soft for 18, nice climb though, shame it's so short.
14 | ★ Fucary Rug | 15m, 5 | ★ Good
12 | ★ Jug City | 15m, 3 | Average
Wed 4th Feb 2015 - Balls Head
Central Buttress | ||||||
17 | ★ Navel Research - with Melissa | 10m, 5 | ★ Good
Didn't trust the very rusty bolts, so top-roped. Nice move into cave and balancy finish.
Sun 18th Jan 2015 - Blue Mountains
Mount Victoria Area Mount York Mezzaluna Area
17 | ★ Sardines (Unknown (2)) | 12m, 4 | ★ Good
Used #5 cam in Frolic just to reach the 1st bolt! Pretty easy juggy climbing from then on.
Sat 17th Jan 2015 - Blue Mountains
Blackheath Area Mt Boyce Afghan/Girl in the Mirror wall
16 | ★★ Endless Pleasure in a Limousine | 47m, 14 | ★★ Very Good
Nice climb, jug hauling, go left at top to join SSIM.

However, 6 other parties had the same idea, oh, it's Labour Day w/e! It was a bit like the line of climbers at the Hilary Step on Everest... how do we get all these people off the summit... especially when some of them have paid for the rope swing, and want to do it twice. Urgh.
