Bit of an epic but fun day out! Bummed I fell off 1m before the Anchors on the crux pitch but managed to onsight everything else. Got a bit confused what way to go and where pitches ended as lots of Anchors around.

Fun day out. Don't think the route gets climbed much. Onsighted all the pitches I lead and had one foot slip on the second pitch whilst seconding.

A bit confusing from the start. We couldn't find the proper start, so we climbed a 6a to get to the first anchors. Grades were a bit sandbag, I guess it's classic grading system from the old days... 6a felt like 6b, 6c+ felt like 7a.

I had the honor to lead the final pitch. I did manage to get the moves of the actual crux sequence right (well, with dogging them), but I failed at the last bolt because I did not manage to read the move in the dihedral. A right-traverse on the slab to a jug and then a boulder move and mantle would have been my preferred way to solve this problem, but I did not have enough confidence and the bolt was way too far on the left for this solution.

Went out with a local guide Philippe. Super short approach, 5min drive from La Palud and 2 min walk from the lookout. Recent route, bolted in 2015 in between some classics. First pitch was mega long, pumped out near the end and rested before the finish. Phillipe shouted out his phone was ringing as he seconded up. I took the rope in while he answered questions in a radio interview about the verdon! Rain started to pick up near the end of the climb. Couldn't pull the crux move on the last pitch on first go, rested and the wall became soaked. Luckily, friends who had just topped out threw down a top rope and helped me through the last 10m in the pouring rain. Safe to say, Phillipe was freezing down at the belay.

Thought we were climbing "Riviere Kwai" but followed the wrong line. There is a new bolt line to the right of "Pilier du levant" which confused us.

Were aiming for Riviere Kwai -- but climbers starting up a newly bolted route to the right said they were on Pilier du Levant... and we went up the wrong route. Oops. Lead pitches 2, 4, 6. I fell on P6, not on any of the crux moves, but in a slab section when I went up then left instead of left then up. Oops.

Well, this was not a good day. Two of our group climbed L'arête à Francis, while the other three of us started with Pilier du levant. Onfortunately our designated leader for the easier pitches fell in P4 and hurt her knee. So the other two of my rope team abseiled while I joined the others in L'arête à Francis.

The grades from the guide didn't really correspond to how hard we perceived the pitches to be. P1,P3 (one move) and P7 felt a bit harder than graded while P2 and P6 werea bit easier. The route is really beautiful and varied with laybacking on flakes in P1, a slight traverse and overhang in P2, the Z that probably gave the route its name with a short delicate right-traverse in the middle. P4 is a left-traverse and P5 follows along a beautiful arête. P6 is a short and steep wall while P7 ends with a left-traverse onto a super delicate slab.

In the new guidebook the last 4 pitches get 6b grading, which is fair enough. I did bail after the fourth pitch though as it was too painful to climb slabs on a hot day with new shoes ..

I sat on the rope a little, whipped as well. It was a pretty hot day and we were mostly climbing in the sun. Every step on those Verdon footholds was very painful. The big toes are not used to this style of climbing I reckon. Insane! The quote of the day ended up being: Come on Dimi, Allez! Courage! You are just climbing a 6a+ I found it pretty interesting how every pitch had traversing bits. I usually froth traverses. By the time we got to the top I think I got to understand a little better the Verdon style and what one needs to do to climb here. So Stoked!!!!! Such a unique place!

Afterwards steep face climbing in jugs (if you find them). 3 6a+ Second lead by Fabian Michel Starts with a steep dihedral, some good holds and underclings. The crux is a tricky traverse to the right. 4 6a+ Sport lead by ToxicD Two Crux sequences. One at the start and one at the end before the tree. Vertical face climbing on pockets and crimps. 5 6a+ Second lead by Fabian Michel Starts with a traverse to reach the huge dihedral to the right. Première ascension en grande voie. La seconde longueur présente un relais intermédiaire que nous avons utilisé. La troisième longueur présente un pas assez difficile au niveau d'un cheminée qui nécessite une sortie par la gauche sans beaucoup de prises. Temps global, sans se presser : environ 2h.

Climbed the 5a right variant for pitch 1 and the 5c left variant instead of pitches 2 and 3. We had an additional beaky stance right under the 5c chimney to have minimize rope drag and then maximized rope drag by combining the chimney with the next pitch. The big flake variant, chimney and the second last vertical pitch make this a classic. The last pitch is very short. We should have combined it. Would give it the grades 5a, 5c, 4a (until belay 3 m under the chimney), 5b (chimney), 3a, 5c, 4c.
