Flora and Fauna: Nesting birds

Hell's Gate cliffs are important nesting sites for a number of birds, including vulnerable species that face a number of threats in the surrounding area. Please check on the local Whatsapp groups for the latest sightings or restrictions and if you come across a nest on your climb try and bail off well before reaching, to avoid disturbing nesting animals and potentially causing active nests to be abandoned.

Summary

Excellent trad climbing from short cracks to long multi-pitch routes, just 2 hours drive from Nairobi.

Description

One of Kenya's best crags. Climb some adventurous multi-pitches while watching zebras, giraffes and buffalos below.

The Main Wall is the biggest cliff near Nairobi and shouldn't be underestimated. The last pitch is often of poor quality rock so routes have a "seriouness" grading to reflect it.

In addition to Main Wall, there are a number of shorter faces, two small stacks and Fischer’s Tower, a 30-meter pinnacle with has several exciting routes.

Some of the classic climbs on Main Wall are Olympian, Magician, Merlin, Stiletto, The Devil Drives, and The Amazing Journey.

Access issues

Paid

The cliffs are located within the National Park, you need to pay entrance and abide by park rules.

Approach

Steep hike 5-10 min

About 2 hours away from Nairobi, then short walk to the cliffs.

Where to stay

Camping within the park (with toilets, fire pits and broken benches). Or one of the campgrounds outside the park (that have restaurant, showers etc).

Ethic

Well established

No bolting unless you're doing a new route (then please check with the MCK that it is a new route beforehand).
