Summary

Area with lots of potential for sport climbing and bouldering.

Description

Ma-Voloni is ripe for sport climbing and bouldering development. A few scouting trips have already been, establishing some great bouldering (Boulder Garden and Ojos Rojos sectors), some run-out trad routes on big features, 6 sport routes at the time of writing including a 120m multi-pitch 6a, and spotting the potential for much more climbing. People interested in developing further should follow the bolting policy (http://mountainclubkenya.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Bolting-Policy.pdf) and contact the Mountain Club of Kenya. Get exploring!

Access issues

No access issue so far, but this is contingent on good relationship with the locals. Please check with the MCK before going. Sadly, there has been a theft in 2019 by young boys (4 meters of rope cut, a phone, food...) so don't leave your things unattended.

Approach

Depends on where you stay and which area to access. The campsite is close to a lot of boulders to develop, Arobaini, and some trad routes. Nudulumo and Kipwa Eco-Lodge are closer to the bouldering and other sport routes.

Where to stay

Ndulumo Cottages have two fully equipped cottages, sleeping up to 7 each (one double, one twin and one triple), eating and chill-out area near the river, and the option to camp. They also have a small plunge pool, but call ahead to check it's in use. Tell them you're from the MCK: https://www.facebook.com/Ndulumo-Cottages-1561076650800587/ Prices as of Jan 2020: 10,000 kes per cottage, 750 kes pp to camp, including access to hot shower and toilet. Phone: 0722308649

Kipwa Ecolodge is another option: https://www.facebook.com/kipwa.ecolodge Be warned, it is not eco and not a lodge. The pool is nice, but the house is lacking love and care, expensive at 15,000 kes to sleep 6 and the owner has been unpleasant to guests in the past.

There's also the cheaper/free option of camping close to the rocks. Please get in touch with MCK to ask for the best spot.

Ethic

Please do not give out money to locals - if you want to contribute buy food and snacks from the local stalls. Kids will likely follow you around and walk up your boulder project barefoot - keep an eye out to make sure they don't hurt themselves!

History

View historical timeline

Originally scouted for climbing by Henrik Reukhala back in 2016, with routes progressively added by MCK parties heading out to explore - still lots to develop, so get out there and add your name to the history of the place!
