Description

Named after the huge fig tree that was seemingly cloven in two by lightning (name also available to use as a 30s Blues guitarist moniker). Great concentration of problems, from hard low traverses to tall, heady problems.

Access issues inherited from Lukenya

Lukenya is owned by the Mountain Club of Kenya and entrance is free for members. Non-members have to pay for a daily membership (KES400 for Kenyan citizens, KES800 for others, payable by Mpesa paybill no 880926. Account: guest fee). No commercial groups are allowed. Some climbs are occasionally off-limits when eagles are nesting (in particular Eagles Nest Face). If this is the case its normally communicated on a notice in the sign-on book at the gate and through a climber whatsapp group.

Approach

Either drive towards the campsite and go right along the top of the ridge, or turn off Mombasa Road towards Daystar University, and keep going before turning right on rough tracks to navigate your way here. Park right at the rocks, all boulder within a couple minutes of the car.

Ethic inherited from Lukenya

Lukenya is mostly trad. No bolting is allowed without a special permission from the Mountain Club of Kenya.

History

View historical timeline

FIrst explored in 2018 and neglected, before renwed interest in 2020. Some of the original lines were destroyed by some sand quarrying in 2019 sometime, and others were given 2 or 3 metre extra height and await new bold lines.
