Hilltop location overlooking Weiss Lake. Accessible by an unlined asphalt road. Shower house is handicap accessable. some of the climbing routes can be viewed from a wheeelchair. most routes require some walking of 100 yards or less.

Probably one of Alaska's best sport climbing areas. Interesting features, steep rock and nice views with a lake to chill after the climbing.

Beschreibung

Mostly sport climbing with some nice boulders dispersed in the forest.

Zustieg

Drive east on Glenn Allen highway and park on the pullout on the right (coming from Palmer) just at milemarker 88. There are more pullouts before that if needed. Cross the street and about 30 meters back you will find a faint trail heading up to the wall. The last part leads you over some blocks to the obvious wall. There are more paths going up to boulders further back towards Palmer.

Moderate sport climbing on good Arkansas sandstone.

Einschränkungen

The Climbing area is on the Jamestown Wildlife Management Area. The last section of the road in is leased to a logging company. While you can pass through, be careful not to park beyond the orange gate beyond nightfall. It's not known when the gate may be locked or unlocked, so it's best to park before it (again watching for logging trucks and avoiding them).

Zustieg

From the intersection of Hwy 167 and Hwy 230, take Hwy 230 west for 5 miles. Take a left (south) on Jamestown Loop Rd. Continue on Jamestown Loop Rd for 3 and a bit miles and turn right on an unmarked dirt road just past a Jametown W.M.A sign. Follow the road for 2 miles to hit the cliffs (but be wary of the Access issues).

Übernachtung

Motels in Batesville. Camping is allowed in the W.M.A. areas, but be sure to park outside the orange gate and off the road as logging trucks will use it at times.

Beschreibung

Although the outdoor climbing and bouldering opportunities in the Bay Area are reasonably limited, what the region does offer, thanks to its violent geological history, is an impressive variety of rock types.

This creates a wide variety of climbing styles, which helps to keep the stoke alive even after you've visited every crag.

And being a weekend trip away from the endless amount of world-class climbing in the 'Sierra Nevada' certainly doesn't make this a bad place to be a climber!

Übersicht

Pocketed, mostly vertical limestone, short approaches, year round climbing in all orientations in a beautiful setting. It can get crowded on weekends but the area is big enough to find a quiet spot.

Beschreibung

The Shelf Road is a limestone sport climbing destination in southern Colorado offering mostly single pitch sport climbs. Most of the cliffs are vertical with pocketed limestone but you will find one or the other crack (and even some trad or mixed routes) in between. Shelf Road is close to Cañon City, Colorado Springs and even Denver, making it a popular weekend destination. The most popular cliff is Cactus Wall but many other cliffs offer high quality rock and might be a good choice on the weekends. You can climb all year at Shelf Road, chasing sun or shade depending on the season. The surroundings are beautiful and quiet and the camping is cheap (or free). Paths are well maintained and marked and it is easy to find your way around.

Zustieg

Find your way to Cañon City located at the Arkansas River. From the city take 15th Street north (or North Raynolds Ave if you come from the east) and then follow Garden Park Road (9) north until you see a turn off for either Sand Gulch Camping (on your left) or Bank (just before a sharp right turn on your left). For The Bank Camping and day parking follow the dirt road up, for the day parking for Cactus Cliff continue on Garden Park Road (which by now is called Shelf Road) until you see the parking.

Übernachtung

There are 2 BLM campsites, Sand Gulch (a little further down) and The Banks (closer to the cliffs). There is also dispersed camping as the land is BLM land but not a lot of it is really flat.

Ethik

There are restrooms at the camp sites and in between The Vault and Cactus Cliff, please use them! Pack in what you pack out.

Geschichte

Shelf Road was on of the first sport climbing areas in the USA. First routes were bolted here in the mid to late 1980's.

Massacre Rocks receives its name from an Indian ambush that took place back in the old days. Massacre is located on the Snake River and is a beautiful place.

Beschreibung

Massacre Rocks is a large natural area of sagebrush, ancient cedar trees, sand dunes, and box canyons sculpted by the Great Bonneville flood some 14,000 years ago. The flood carved numerous natural box canyons and 'alcoves' leaving steep rock walls ranging from 30' to 200' in height. The exposed basalt formations were originally formed from repeated volcanic activity in the Snake River Plain. The rock is high quality black, brown, and tan basalt. It is steep (sometimes overhanging) and heavily featured with edges, pockets, blocks, slopers, bulges, dihedrals, and cracks - perfect for much varied sport climbing.

There are over 750 well equipped sport routes at Massacre on more than two dozen different walls ranging from 30' to 200' in height. The average climb is about 60'. The "climb anywhere" nature of the rock has led to a high concentration of routes on most walls. Sometimes routes are as close as 5 or 6 feet apart which can make identifying routes a challenge. A good strategy is to count bolts. Once a route has been identified, it's easy to track routes to the right or left. This guide have accurate bolt counts for most route descriptions at the popular crags.

The sport climbs at Massacre typically have closely spaced bolts for pushing one’s limits. Climbs range from 5.8 to 5.13 with most being in the middle of that range. If you climb 5.10 to 5.12 and like to clip bolts, you will find a nearly endless supply of high quality sport climbing.

Some esoteric gear you may want to bring could include a snake bite kit and the knowledge of how to use it. The Snake River plain is the home of some mighty big rattlers.

For climbing you mainly need a rack of quickdraws. 16 draws should suffice on longest routes while the majority of climbs take around 5 to 8 draws. There are some natural pro lines in what is predominantly a sport climbing area. For these a standard rack of cams and nuts should do the trick.

The vast majority of routes have sport anchors which are typically an open cold shut and a steel or aluminum carabineer. This makes finishing and lowering from a route convenient. Please use your own gear if you plan to top rope the route. Occasionally, the routes will have chain anchors at the top of the climb; if in doubt always bring a couple extra draws.

There are rattlesnakes in the area though they are typically not a problem. If you bring dogs or children scope the area before settling down to climb.

It can be extremely hot at Massacre during the summer. The sand can burn bare feet. Dogs in particular can have a very tough time with the hot sand. Due to some long treks across hot sand, it is not advisable to bring dogs during summer, even if you intend to climb in the shade.

Einschränkungen

Massacre Rocks is part of the much larger “American Falls Archaeological District” (AFAD). There are multiple land jurisdictions in both the AFAD and where climbing takes place (see BLM Map). Extensive and well documented studies of the AFAD near and around the Snake River show many cultural resources and evidence of human habitation for at least the last 13,000 years. This area is considered sacred to the local Shoshone- Bannock tribes. Be respectful and minimize your footprint and impact in the area. Keep your staging area small and contained. Pick up and pack out your trash including tape, orange or banana peels, cigarette butts, etc. Prevent your dog from digging. Don’t start or make any fires, especially near the base of cliffs.

Also, please, only park in one of the designated parking areas and respect all road closures. Sandy soils in the AFAD are prone to wind erosion. Motorized vehicles and even foot traffic can damage the fragile ecology and could destroy rare, irreplaceable evidence of 13,000 years of human habitation. When hiking to the crags use established trails and don’t short cut or braid existing trails. Use the following graphic from the BLM to understand which areas are closed to motorized travel.

Zustieg

The quickest and easiest way to reach the Main Wall and Owl Cove, if you have access to a boat, is to cross the Snake River at Massacre State Park. Drive about 11.5 miles west of American Falls on I-86. Take the Massacre Rocks exit, exit #28. Park your vehicle near the fee station, and portage your boat about 200 yards to the river. If you paddle straight across the river you will be near the entrance to the Owl Cove. Alternatively, you can drive to the boat ramp and boat 1/4 mile back upriver.

Two-wheel drive back roads will get you near most of the climbing. From the town of American Falls, take State Highway 39 across the American Falls Reservoir dam. Take the first left, Lamb-Weston Road. Listed mileage starts here.

0.2 miles: Turn left onto Borah Road

1.8 miles: Turn left onto Lake Channel Road, which is paved and follows the river for awhile before heading across potato fields.

13.7 miles: Turn left onto 2 track road. Follow this road for about 100 yards all the way to the fence line. A very short distance before the fence you cross another dirt road. Do not turn right yet. Go all the way to the fence and then turn right and follow the fence line until you come to a BLM gate at 14.1 miles.

14.1 miles: Turn left and go through the BLM gate (and please close it behind you). Continue along a 2 track dirt road. You will pass through a couple more gates and come to a subtle right turn at 16.5 miles. Continue right until an obvious right fork at 17.1 miles.

17.1 miles: Take the right fork and continue on a well used 2 track dirt road. 17.7 miles: P2 parking

To hike to the Outback or Main Wall, don’t take the last hard right. Take the left fork and continue about 1⁄2 mile until the road takes a sharp left. Park here at a fence line and barrier indicating the road towards the river is closed to motorized vehicles. Hike the old road. A fork left at about 3⁄4 mile leads to the river and the Outback. For the Main Wall, stay on the rim for another 1⁄2 mile before finding a weakness to the river and the Main Wall.

Übernachtung

There is pleasant but primitive free camping at several locations near the parking on the west rim. Bring your own water, firewood and shovel.

Beautiful and remote area in the Sawtooth mountains, north of Ketchum and Sun Valley. The nearest town to most climbing areas is Stanley. Climbing in this area is mostly traditional. Most areas require a long approach which involves camping.

All approaches for sub areas are long and involved. The standard launching point for Elephants perch and Superslab areas are from Redfish Lodge. You can cut down the approach to these areas by purchasing a boat ride the length of redfish lake. Other areas such as Finger of Fate have their own approach.

Remote primitive camping is allowed anywhere in the area.

First class limestone in an amazing setting. The Fins are at the extreme tip of the Lost River Range and the view from the top is just breathtaking out into the plains of Idaho.

Beschreibung

Mostly vertical and slightly overhanging routes on excellent quality limestone. Crimps, pockets, slopers, the hardest route in Idaho and all that in a very pristine setting. Come prepared for some wilderness, rattlesnakes, beautiful views and night skies. Take an extra portion of skin as some of the routes are sharp and. Depending on where you park the morning hike up can be brutally hot in the sun but is absolutely worth doing.

Zustieg

From Blackfoot - the potato capital of the world - take highway 26 west until a few miles before Arco, where you make a right on highway 33 towards Howe. At about milemarker 10 you will see a gravel pit on your left, turn here on an unmarked forest road (it has the number 557) and pass left of the pit. Follow the relatively good road into the Eightmile Canyon - first flat, than a little down and finally up. After about 5km you will see a small parking lot on your left (some cliffs are already visible above you). Park here if you don't have a 4x4 car. Alternatively you may continue up on the now steeper road with lots of loose gravel into an nice small pine forest just above the cliffs. Check the road before you go as there might still be snow on the top as late as early June!

From the lower parking hike up the road for about 200m and then follow the obvious and steep trail up. It leads you directly to Yellow Cake Wall, from there you follow right and up along Discovery Wall and then almost flat to all other sectors.

Übernachtung

You may camp at the parking below (small and not a lot of flat space), on top (nice) or just like 1.5km after the pit on your left on a nice flat spot. There are no facilities of any sort - please pack-in what you pack-out!

Teddy Bear Cove gets it’s name from the profile of the area as viewed from Google Earth maps.

Beschreibung

Teddy Bear Cove (TBC) is a new climbing area with very few ascents. Routes here have been engineered to be safe and clean which includes TR’ing, planned clips, and cleaning of loose rocks (sometimes big blocks). However, routes can still be somewhat dirty and/or still have loose rock. Routes at TBC can be more dangerous than other climbing areas including the nearby and similar Massacre Rocks State Park. While new ½” hardware is installed and obvious loose blocks are removed, it’s possible fixed hardware could fail and rocks or even large blocks could dislodge over time and maim or kill the climber or belayer. Use of helmets by both climber and belayer is strongly encouraged.

Einschränkungen

Most of the climbing is on Idaho State Land including The Nose, Send Town, JR’s Place, Headwall, Juniper Wall, and the Pit. Powerline Crag and the Sandbox are on BLM land.

Zustieg

Set your odometer at the American Falls Dam and turn onto Lamb Westin Road. Right away at 0.2 miles turn left onto Borah Rd. At 1.8 miles, turn left onto Lake Channel Road. Follow Lake Channel Road until 11.0 miles (from the dam). Here Lake Channel Road takes a large turn to the left. Instead of following the pavement to the left continue straight on a gravel road until it ends in another 0.2 miles. Turn right onto Quigley Road.

Immediately after turning right and passing over a cattle guard, turn left on a dirt road under some power lines. You can access The Nose, Powerline Crag, and the Sandbox from this road. This road is a little sandy but low clearance vehicles should be able to park at Powerline Crag. It’s a short walk across the valley to the Sandbox.

For Send Town, JR’s Place, Headwall and The Pit, continue on Quigley road another 0.2 miles to a large pullout on the left. Park here if you have a low clearance vehicle otherwise follow any of the braided road options a short distance to the rim above the Pit. It’s also possible to continue on dirt roads to the Sandbox.

Ethik

Teddy Bear Cove is a sport climbing crag and nearly every route is safely bolted so that the only gear needed is a rope and draws. All routes are less than 30 meters in height and most routes are outfitted with convenient sport anchors consisting of a steel carabiner and a steel open cold shut. If you intend to top rope with a big group please use your own draws. Many splitter cracks are bolted. If you want to climb trad routes, bring your pro and skip the bolts. Please don’t chop the bolts after your trad ascent. If you see a new trad line you want to get an FA on, it is strongly recommended to clean the route first as loose blocks to some extend (more or less) have been present on the 100+ routes established at TBC.

More than 100 routes were developed in 2016. Prior to this development, there were only 3 or 4 historic routes in the entire area – probably established in the mid 90’s.

West on 45 from Harrisburg, IL, keep on straight through Carrier Mills. Left on Ozark Road. After a sharp turn in the road just past Zion Church Cemetery, you will pass Trigg Tower Road on the right (do not turn on trigg tower road). Take a Right turn onto the gravel road just before the first farmhouse on the right. keep on this road for a few miles and you will find a parking area, further down there are parking options on various pull offs on the side of the road.

Unlikely Wall is a limestone road cut with lots of flaky crag.

Zustieg

Park under the IN-37 overpass at the Harrodsburg exit. A trail begins at the bottom on the west side of IN-37 and the north side of Monroe Dam Rd. Continue up the steep hillside until you are above the road (to your right), and Unlikely Wall will be on your left.

Geschichte

Unlikely Wall was created when IN-37 was built. Some locals found it and started putting up climbs. Andy Howe installed safety bolts on the taller climbs. It grew in popularity once the publication of the Rock'n Indiana guidebook by Kevin Foy was published

Übersicht

The park has about 50 bolted climbs on overhanging pocketed Devonian Limestone. The bulk of the climbs are in the 5.10-5.11 range, which makes the crag moderate by Iowa Standards. Also, it has been recently rebolted, so the bolts are fresh, and because it is heavily climbed there is the minimum amount of loose choss. Pictured Rocks is a good choice for people who are just getting into sport climbing, or who want to get out and catch a quick pump.

Classic Routes include Tarzan, Virgin Lemonade, Superfly and Flash.

Beschreibung

Follow the signs for Camp Courageous, off of 38s south of Monticello Iowa. Keep going past the camp and down the road into the park. The climbs are for the most part located off of the well developed trail that departs on the other side of the picnic shelter.

Einschränkungen

The land is owned by the state of Iowa as a hunting preserved, but they have handed over administration of the land to the Jones County Conservation Board. There is a bolting committee that is trusted with making sure the hardware is in good condition.

Zustieg

The climbs are for the most part close to the parking lot and easy to find. The two exceptions are Chicago wall that is around the other side of the bluff leading up to the boat ramp, and Windy Point which is a 20 minute walk north along the top of the bluffs.

Übernachtung

You can no longer camp in the park, however, there are camp sites at other parks in Jones County.

Ethik

Pictured Rocks is a very heavily used park, that is popular for trout fishing, canoeing, deer hunting, picnicking and hiking. Be nice to people you meet, and clean up after yourself. The Jones County Parks people have been accommodating to us, so be a good citizen in return.

In Iowa, we don't drape ropes off of everything that we want to climb, as the scene is not crowded, and you rarely have to wait. If you are going to top rope a route several times, and it is equipped with sport shuts, hang your own draws to minimize wear and tear on the hardware.

Finally, stay on the established trails, don't do things that will kill trees like wrapping webbing on them that will damage the bark. The rangers don't want you slacklining.

Geschichte

Pictured Rocks was probably the first sport crag developed in Iowa. Most of the development took place in the 1990's. The only printed guide to the area was Sean Kinzel's "Wild Iowa" guide book.

The Red River Gorge is located south east of Lexington, Kentucky in the Daniel Boone National Forest. Take highway 15 from Lexington towards Stanton and follow highway 11 to reach most of the climbing.

As far as deep water soloing in Kentucky goes, this is the best.

Beschreibung

This lake isn't completely surrounded by sheer cliffs but where the cliffs are they provide pretty good climbing on sandstone rock similar to that of Red River Gorge. Wall heights range from 10-60 ft. The lake is a 1500+ acre lake. So there is a lot of room to climb.

Technically cliff jumping (water soloing) is banned at this lake as well as many other lakes in the Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. So climb at your own risk.

All the approaches are from the water. So if you don't have your own boat you can get a rental at the Grayson Lake Marina. Usually you can get a rental for around $200 for the day. Here is the marina phone number. 606-474-4513.

Beschreibung

Greater Boston is the metropolitan region of New England encompassing the municipality of Boston, the capital of the U.S. state of Massachusetts and the most populous city in New England, as well as its surrounding areas. The region forms the northern arc of the US northeast megalopolis and is home to much climbing history dating back well into the early twentieth century.

Einschränkungen

Many of the popular climbing areas in the Boston area lie in protected state parks and urban wildlife areas. Some are even conserved by special interest groups dedicated to preserving the history of climbing in the area. In and around the city, there are many walls and boulders that lie on semi-private and questionable land. Use your best judgement and follow your guides.

Beschreibung

A 300 foot long sandstone cliff rising to the height of about 40 feet.

Einschränkungen

The ledges are located in the City of Grand Ledge's Oak Park. Make sure you climb only the ledges in the park and obey all park rules.

Zustieg

Approach cliffs from the top. To access the bottom follow the trail on the eastern edge of the park.

Ethik

No lead climbing and no rappelling. Make sure to pad all anchors to protect the rock.

park on west side of road and hike in on obvious path loops around woods and goes back to dumpy falls you can see it from the road lots of short hard bouldering problems scattered around the area def more to be discovered i only had short time to explore it completely undeveloped def loose choss its more like adventure bouldering really cool area worth checking out if you happen to be going down forrest highway 16 to kenton and very secluded and virgin please respect the area!!!

There are 2 walk in campsites(cant find where they are), I dont think anyone cares if you pitch a tent in the quarry if you adhere to L.N.T.or sleep in your car. Local kids woke me up many times through the night partying. Next time Ill park y the boat launch

I bolted most of the sport routes here. There are about 25 in the mid-5.10 range. Nice for 1-2 days of sport climbing. I built this to mirror European climbing, lots of bolts, family friendly, fun day at the climbing park. Not a place to send projects.

Also tons of awesome bouldering across the river. Never been there.

In winter this is the place to go for most of the USA. They have an ice farm that faces north and is very very popular.

I don't think they allow camping, but there is camping in Banning Park north of here OR lots of hotels by the casinos about 7 miles south.

Have fun, not many rules. Prefer you don't dry tool on sport climbs.
