Summary

Mount Ossa is the highest peak in Tasmania, accessed from The Overland Track. There is a clearly marked track leading up to the summit from Ducane Gap.

Description

The rock formations on Ossa are Jurassic dolerite nunatak's, the Dolerite has good friction and reliable protection. The column structures can be loose in places, most of the cracks are covered in lichen/moss requiring care and some cleaning.

Access issues

With on going COVID restrictions, bookings to walk the arm river track must be made in advance.

Approach

Access is via the Overland Track from a turn off at Ducane Gap. Approach can be made within 1-2 days hiking in via the Arm River Track to Pelion Hut and continuing up to Ducane Gap. The hike is roughly 20km with over 800m of altitude gain.

Where to stay

Booking to Camp in Pelion Hut is advised to minimise the impact of camping on sensitive alpine vegetation.

Ethic

Routes are protected traditionally, the crag at the Gates of Mordor are mostly single pitches with an alpine flavour.
