Summary

The rock is slightly overhanging, with bore holes, edges, jugs, crimps and slopers.

Description

This crag is the site of an old quarry. It sits right above an old train line which is in pretty poor condition, so be careful when walking around! It's easy to find and is located about 15 minutes out of Graz.

There is an article Badlwandgalerie in the german version of Wikipedia, including some historic details and historic pictures.

Approach

You can park nearby, just off the highway and walk in easily. There's a gate and a simple path to follow. Total walking time shouldn't be more than 5 minutes.

History

History timeline chart

  • the gallery was built from 1843 as a train and street route
  • the wall is the result of digging down land to make place for the route
  • from 1966 it was only used for the street, as a newer train route was built on the other riverside
  • in 1978 it was closed for traffic (other streets have been built meanwhile)
  • the remaining arches are under monument protection, but abandoned

  • entering the arches has always been prohibited, but condoned

  • in 1988 climbing the walls started (Snoopy by E. Kurzmann and H. Puregger)
  • in 1990 the first routes were bolted
  • closed in 2016 due to danger of collapse of the gallery, which builds the ground level
