Croissants, seas of sandstone boulders and scenic limestone sport crags.

description

France is a highly sought-after destination for climbing, and for good reasons. From classic sport crags to scenic multi-pitch adventures just above the water or 4,000m up an alpine peak, there’s a something for everyone here, all year round. And then, there’s the unforgettable food!

As a rule of thumb, the quality of climbing gets better and better as you go South, with some notable exceptions.

For bouldering (‘bloc’). About an hour away from Paris, Fontainebleau is a world-class bouldering area with more than 30,000 sandstone boulder problems. To the West, in the Bretagne region, you’ll find granite boulders right by the beach, such as in Pen-Hir and Kerlouan. In the South, check out Targassone, Annot, Ailefroide and many more.

For sport climbing (’escalade sportive’), there’s no shortage of world-class crags. Start with the classic areas such as Le Saussois, Les Calanques, Le Verdon, Buoux, Volx, Chateauvert, Orpierre, Mouries… and then head to the more ‘futuristic’ falaises such as Ceuse, Les Gorges du Tarn, Saint-Léger du Ventoux, Orgon, Les Gorges du Loup... the list goes on.

For trad climbing (‘escalade en terrain d’aventure’), head to Annot, le Vercors, but also Les Gorges du Verdon or even Ceuse.

Deep water soloing is also worth a mention with Les Calanques, La Ciotat, Les Gorges du Tarn, Les Gorges du Verdon and La Piade being hot spots in the summer months. Watch for tourists when jumping off!

Last but not least, climbing is also well developed in French islands such as Corsica, la Guadeloupe (Caribbeans) and l’Ile de la Reunion (Indian Ocean).

Bonne grimpe!

All Bouldering

Lat / Long: 48.456244, -5.094210

description

Boulder fields litter the shore line of the northern and western sides of this island. Crashpads are a must and there is a lot to explore on this sharp and friction friendly granite.

approach

Catch the ferry from Le Conquet to Port du Stiff on Ouessant. There is a camping area in the main town centre about 4 kms from the port. Hire a bicycle, eat crepes and take in this beautiful remote place.

history

Apparently there were routes established, however with the length and amount of lichen on everything I seriously doubt it. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so be very respectful and only clean what you intend to touch. This remote island off the coast of France offers potential for the seriously motivated.

summary

On the France/Luxembourg border, a nice crag that offers 139 routes from 3 to 7c.

description

A lot of routes are suitable for beginners since top ropes can be installed by accessing the top by foot. Most of the 'older' routes are not higher that 10/12 meters.

A vast sector had been set up and bolted. This sector is higher and harder than the existing one ( 5 - 7C ). The new sector is still a bit adventure, wearing a helmet is strongly advised, pieces of rock can still fall.

A brand new Topo had been published, it contains the complete route guides and Fototopo for the regions Audin-le-tiche and Berdorf. Actually the Topo is available at Caspers Climbing shop in Mamer/Luxembourg.

A complete free guide book from the old part can be downloaded here: http://lezolkosdusuaps.e.l.f.unblog.fr/files/2018/04/audun.pdf

A small crag with some surprising sharp roofs. Easy approach and wonderful ambiance.

In 2020 the bolts were still in good shape.

The routes are easy to discover, and height is limited to about 15m.

Not much more info from a local.

approach

(49.916829, 4.839881) next to the "Ruisseau du Corbeau" (Raven's Creek.) Walk upstream for a few hundred meters and once you see moody, dark rock to the left, look for a path to the right, up the hill, where you can already see the rock through the trees.

(Climb the dark rock too if you like, it looks like you can make some really crumbly boulders here.)

history

At some time in the past, not too long ago, someone bolted the place and, as happens so often in the smaller crags, everything was forgotten. Only one name remains painted on the wall.

The holy grail of bouldering. Every serious boulderer should visit Fontainebleau at least once in their life. You'll find a beautiful landscape, perfect rock and the need for a wide variety of climbing skills!

The area is mainly taken care of by CoSiRoc (https://cosiroc.fr/) where you can find most of the topos.

https://www.topo-bleau.fr/

https://bleau.info/

approach

Located close to Paris, so there are many options to get there. Generally, a car is recommended to reach most of the sectors. From the La Musardière campsite, the Trois Pignons sectors can be easily reached by bike (or even by foot)

Trains to Bois-le Roi and Fontainebleau-Avon leave from the Gare de Lyon in Paris. From them, several sectors can be reached by a short hike of about 30min.

where to stay

Campsite La Musardière for direct access to the Trois Pignons area. Several other campsites are around, but they require a car to reach the sectors.

ethic

ATTENTION:

* FIRES ARE PROHIBITED IN THE FOREST *

The sandstone is fragile. To preserve the area (and the climbs) please adhere to the following rules:

  1. Use chalk with caution and brush it off afterwards (including huge tick marks).

  2. Chalk should only be used on hands, never directly on the rock!

  3. Clean the bottom of your climbing shoes removing all sand and dirt before any climb. This is essential to limit rock erosion.

  4. DONT CLIMB ON WET ROCK!!!!

  5. Night climbing is prohibited to reduce the impact on the animal habitat.

  6. Dont use the base of the routes as your toilet. Go into the forest a little further off the track or out of the area for a 1 and dig a hole for a 2.

history

1908 the Paris Alpine club marked the first parcours to practice techniques for the higher montains. Since then, Fontainebleau has always been on the forefront of the development of bouldering.
