Description

'Palionisos Bay' comprises a handful of sectors located in and around the bay at Palionisos. The sectors 'Ilias Pillar', 'Paradise Beach' and 'Palionisos Bay' are located on the obvious long cliff on the left side of the bay. The more recent additions 'Exo Syki' and 'Kardama' are located further down into bay and are best accessed by boat.

Approach

From Masouri, drive towards Emporios. Drive through Skalia village and turn right up at the junction onto the steep uphill road to Palionisos (37.04138, 26.94815). Pass the col (about 250 m MSL) and drive down the serpentines all the way into the bay until you reach an intersection (37.04318, 26.97055).

To 'Ilias Pillar', 'Paradise Beach' and 'Palionisos Bay'

Turn left at the intersection, following the sign to Taverna Ilias. Park at the taverna's parking lot at the end of the road (37.04249, 26.97254).

To 'Ilias Pillar' and 'Paradise Beach' (10-15 min): From the parking area, walk up left along the obvious goat path. To 'Paradise Beach', then turn right to the brownish wall. To 'Ilias Pillar', continue further left for another 200 m towards the pillar at the end of the cliff.

To 'Palionisos Bay' (10 min): From the parking area, walk right along the fence and scramble uphill following blue paint marks and cairns to the cliff, featuring a small orange roof.

To 'Exo Syki' and 'Kardama'

Turn right at the intersection, following signs to Taverna Kalidonis. Park at the taverna's parking lot (37.04122, 26.97119).

To 'Exo Syki' on foot (25 min): Follow the dirt road that passes the taverna to the end and continue on the trail along the coastline. On your way, you pass several gates. Close the first three behind you and leave the others as you find them.

To 'Exo Syki' by boat (5 min): Ask in the taverna for a boat to Exo Syki beach. From there, it's a 5 min walk to the cliff.

To 'Kardama' (15-20 min): Access by boat only. Ask in the taverna for a boat to 'Kardama'.

Ethic inherited from Kalymnos

  • PREPARE to leave nothing behind (trashbag, etc).
  • Use your own gear for toproping. Use fixed gear only for lowering. (See first section of guidebook for details.)
  • Minimize single-use plastic. No recycling on the island (yet).
  • Use established paths and close gates behind you.
  • Consider a donation to the rescue team (red boxes).
