Description

The seaside cliffs of Bowentown have probably caught the eyes of a few climbers in the past. The rock is mostly solid but can be crumbly in parts so wearing a helmet is highly recommended, the only major downfall is the sand that can get blown down from the hillside above.

Access issues

Can be difficult at high tide.

Approach

Bowentown is a small town on the end of the peninsula, approx. 5kms south of Waihi Beach and about 15 minutes from Waihi. Once you reach Bowentown, go straight through the roundabout onto Seaforth Rd and continue down that until you reach the Bowentown Beach Holiday Park. Turn left onto Seaforth Rd, drive to the end and park in the car park. There is a boardwalk that will take you down to the beach and from there, turn right and it’s a short walk to the cliffs. Easily accessible at low tide but can be quite tricky if it’s high tide. You can still reach the cliffs at high tide but you’ll just need to do a bit of scrambling over the first couple of small boulders. The climbs themselves are far enough back from the ocean for the belayer and climber to not be affected by the waves.

Where to stay

Waihi Beach, Bowentown

History

History timeline chart

In 2014, Mitchell Falconer saw some potential for some decent climbing on the cliffs on the eastern side of Bowentown Heads, he set about exploring the cliffs, top roping some of the potential routes (made easy by the many Pohutukawa trees lining the tops of the cliffs). Being a novice at bolting, he enlisted the help of Bryce Martin, who was happy to come show him how it was done. So in 2015, a lot of blood, sweat, skin and drill bits later, 3 routes were established.
