Summary

You don’t need to go further from Hangdog than the 2 minute walk to the “High Rocks” swimming hole in the Takaka River. Here you’ll find deep clear water, cliff jumps, rope swings, and some very challenging over-water bouldering problems.

Access issues

Tread lightly as land is DoC-owned and access is not guaranteed. Stick to the formed tracks, respect closed areas, and consult with the locals before conducting any new routing work.

Approach

There are two ways to get to the river you can either follow a well formed path from the car park by the bridge. Or opposite the 'Hangdog' Sign a slightly down the road towards the bridge there is a hidden track that takes you too the spot. You follow the track down to a small little cove by the waters edge. From here you can do one of two things either swim across the river( It is quite powerful in the middle) onto a stony embankment where you have a great view to observe the climbs. The other thing you can do is scuttle along a natural ledge cut into the limestone until you emerge on a really big ledge. This is where the the rope swing is and the start of the two boulders.

Ethic

No Chipping, You have to swim to get back don't walk of from the top. No Shoes or chalk.

Grade Route

Prominent roof boulder over the Takaka river. The roof is like honeycomb Every time you climb it you find a new sequence! Loads of people have made it across the roof, but it is rare that someone makes the difficult move pulling over the lip. This is what gives it its V5/6 rating. Legend has it that the first ascent was done by a dude on acid listening to a walkman!

FA:

Start from the down stream corner of the big ledge. The first move is a bit tricky with wet consequences if you fall. The next 20m is juggy pulls.Stay low and you will make it to " The cave". Its pretty chill until the cave. From here the hard stuff starts. Swing round the corner and continue traversing on pockets until they till stop. The last moves are gnarly.
