The Montsant mountain range and Natural Parc cover a broader region than the area referred to by climbers. For example, strictly speaking, the Margalef climbing areas are within Montsant. However the Montsant climbing area typically refers to the escarpments along the main ridgeline of the mountain range, which alone is still incredibly impressive and extends for almost 20km WSW from Albarca. The climbing style is similar to Margalef, being dominated by pockets and cobblestones, and makes for quite a contrast from the more fingery edging routes at Siurana across the valley.
The sectors west of Sant Joan have a climbing ban between 31 Dec and 1 Jul. Signs also claim that no new routes are allowed.
