Stanage is a gritstone edge in the Peak district. As the longest and most varied of the gritstone crags it can draw a crowd. Expect trad routes from 10-20m high, often with complex 3D movements and a wide range of styles
Stanage is close to the town of Hathersage in the Peak District. Busses can get you here from Sheffield, although most will drive. The crag is within a walk from public transport if needed. There are three major parking areas for Stanage (Stanage Popular, Stanage plantation and Stanage North), check which area you are planning on climbing before parking. On nice weekends parking can be a problem, arrive early if you want a close park.
There are many pubs offering rooms and there is a hostel in Hathersage. Paid camping can be found and some mentions of bivying at the crag can be found, though this is prohibited. Plenty of accommodation exists in Sheffield 20 min from the crag.
Strictly trad ethic here! As the locals say, this is gods own rock.
Stanage has been climbed for over a century, with most major development happening after the second world war.
Did you know that you can create an account to record, track and share your climbing ascents? Thousands of climbers are already doing this.
