History

History timeline chart

While climbing has been done here since for decades, the land was always privately owned. The south side cliff line below the Masonic Temple that was a popular spot to top-rop until a death officially closed access.

Thanks to the amazing efforts of local climbers, a partnership between the Access Fun, Clark County Park District and the Ohio Climbers Coalition the land was purchased and developed into the Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve.

This development effort was no small feat, both in terms of coordination of multiple interested parties, but also in terms of the amount of trash cleanup required. Many locations along the cliffline had been for decades used as illegal dump sites. Hence the common theme with many of the route names like Recycler, Trash-talk, Glass Buttress, and others.
