Dolomite/Dolostone
The term dolomite refers to the mineral CaMg(CO3)2 as well as to a sedimentary carbonate rock more than 90 % consisting of the mineral dolomite. To avoid confusion, sometimes the terms dolomitic rock oder dolostone is used for the rock. However this should be reserved only for magnesium-deficient dolostones or magnesium-rich limestones. The "dolomite problem" does not refer to these definitions, but to the formation of dolomite in large quantities in the past recorded within rocks versus the paucity of dolomite in modern sediment deposition. |
