Friction ok as the mist doesn't seem to reach under the roof with easterlies. Low pocket proved useful at resetting the start pinch. Found new footwork at double crimp so I can now breath and chalk prior to crux entry. Extended crux nut so not much rope to pull out to clip. High point hopping for third jam with second jam half way in, then did triple jam sequence 5 times working on details falling only once. Understand now better the first jam is now almost a side pull high Left foot Drop knee right and bring shoulders more in line with the crack so the cross over RH to second jam thumb down can be established properly. Then feet straight under I need to work on my RH scapular pull to reach LH third jam. Stopped at crux crimp avoiding wearing myself out doing pocket hand shuffle etc. Shot#27

Super good route. The Bush bashing to access it was terrible with all the regrowth and the trails not being evident. Didn't have as much big gear as I would have liked for the top but managed to find some pro. The large tree on the first large ledge seemed strong enough to rap off, except we only brought one rope (facepalm). No tat on it, byo. I set up a hanging belay from it and we did the last mini 3rd pitch to walk off. Took about 1hr to get back to the start via solo gully. Lessons were learned.

A golden route. For the #2 cam which tried to eat the rope, and the number of golden orb spiders I encountered.

This was a fun, strenuous battle! Knowing I had to save big gear for the anchor, I embarked on a creative mission to find smaller placements in wide crack territory.

The bottom bit is average. Chossy rock, vegetation, and at least 5 huge spider webs.

The fun starts below the roof. Good rock, good gear. I was able to walk the #4 and take it with me after placing a #1 in the roof. Getting around it wasn't the crux, it's the wider top section that requires offwidth technique. Luckily there's a few great placements for smaller gear (#.75) deep inside the crack. Built a bomber anchor with a #3, #4, #.4 and an offset nut.

Noticed a lot of drag, and could barely get myself on top of the cliff. The rope was very twisted. After untwisting it a bit I brought Marco de Jongh up, but somehow the twisting continued. The rope had gotten stuck between cam lobes and was twisting itself to insanity. Couldn't pull in slack. With help from a party next to us, Marco managed to clean the offending cam, get lowered, untwist rope, and climb it again.

First half is all good, second half (the crack at the top) requires good jamming technique.

Quite sharp! Couldn't get the crux move and aided through with a sling. A 70m will not get you if you haven't cleaned the draws even if the belayed stands on the cairn, had a bit of fun here ended up in the tree having to free the rope then jumping back to the wall to rap from the second bolt, i think a better solution is to rethread the multiplex anchor.

25 Samarkand

I'd dreamed for quite a while of doing Samarkand, but it seemed very daunting because of the sustained difficulty of the pitches, tradness, the difficulty of bailing after pitch 2. Even climbing with Monty, who'd done it before, I was still nervous about being caught in the sun in the afternoon if we were too slow; it was a very hot, humid day. We met up at 6am and were rapping in by 7. Monty rapped on a 50m rope and could not reach the anchor he was aiming for and had to prussic up to the one above. From there we made it to the bottom in two more raps without further difficulty. We saw Evan down there re-bolting the first pitch and the start of the second. I led P1. I'd like to claim it as my first 23 trad onsight, but there is no way it's 23. I really think it's only 19. Also, I only used one brass nut to protect it, along with more standard gear. I hauled our water and excess gear before belaying Monty up. I led P2 as well. The boulder problem at the start was very slimy and I didn't bother trying to get it free; we were in a hurry after all. After falling off a couple of times I aided through. The rest of the pitch was excellent: steep and exposed with good moves and good gear. I also French-freed the top crux because of slimy holds. I want to go back to try it again. Monty led pitches 3 and 4, and they were a joy to second: really great climbing with a great view. I led pitch 5, and although the difficulty of the climbing wasn't very high, it was hard to find good gear and I pumped out trying to get a nut to seat properly in a pretty bad spot. After a little rest I went to the top. We were out just after midday and were welcomed to lunch ledge by hundreds of march flies and another type of smaller black fly that was also bitey.
