29th Street Trailhead consists of a collection of cliffs, crags, and features located near the toe of Malan Peak between Waterfall Canyon and Taylors Canyon. Approaches and rock quality vary however it offers a pleasant and rewarding outing. Many routes can be top-roped and several offer opportunity to practice mountaineering style skills if desired. It offers an alternative to 9th street if you are seeking a smaller more intimate setting.

Schoolroom features Ogden's highest concentration of established climbing along three tiers of quartzite cliffs. Access is committing but climbing is varied and rewarding for those who venture.

Climbing throughout the Schoolroom began long before local legends Jeff and Greg Lowe began establishing classic test piece trad lines such as Tree Crack (5.11a, early 60's) and Pass or Flail (5.11d, mid 60's). Although many trad lines were established early, little was documented prior to mid-80's. Sport development began proliferating ~2000's. Most climbs begin on the upper tier (4x4 ledge), with a few approach pitches through the lower band. Onsight climbing can be difficult and seem sandbagged. This area has west aspect, open exposure, with longer approaches and egress requiring a fair amount of navigating. Plan accordingly and strategically. The reward is an unapparelled, intimate setting with astounding views. Climbing along Ogden's Schoolroom is rewarding, well worth the effort, and offers something for everyone.

Northern approach:

22nd Street Trailhead: follow Bonneville Shoreline Trail to location (41.2259478, -111.9270853). Trail marker will indicate approach trail to the Ramp.

North Alcove:

22th St, 24th st, or Lake St as for boulder field. Follow trail system south of Patriot crack boulder. Find path through bushes and gain boulderfield. Trend up & right aiming for cliff toe. Find trail below cliff, easy class III scramble through steps gain base near (41.222033, -111.924500) & left of vegetated roof.

Travers north along base to short trad approach pitches (41.2224093, -111.9264163). Pick most appealing line to gain Basement & 4x4 ledge systems.

Southern Approach:

27th Street Trailhead. Hike Bonneville Shoreline Trail to (41.216091, -111.925324) and continue through Upper Boulderfield aiming for the Crack boulder at the base of talus field. Continue up talus field aiming toward (41.2182174, -111.9234957). Once you reach Utahnics several options exist.

Opt. 1: Climb one of the Utahnics routes to gain 4X4 ledge.

Opt. 2: Start on Hyper Dependent and continue up and left on exposed class IV/ 5 easy terrain where two bolts are available.

Opt. 3: Use Approach Routes to gain 4X4 ledge.

Ogden Canyon offers an assortment of climbing for any skill & ability level. Many of the cliffs are nestled within forested side canyons making this an excellent summer climbing location. Exploring each unique crag is well worth the trip.

The more notable & popular crags/ routes are detailed here. Those not listed include: Pipe Wall, Green Snatch, Roadside Attraction, Chouinard's Gully, The Blob, Inner Struggle Wall, Yoda Cave, & The Tower.

Several areas are restricted to or have limited access for climbing. Be mindful and ensure due diligence to promote positive community relations with land owners.

No Climb zones: Ogden Canyon Waterfall Wall (Waterfall dihedral), Ogden Canyon Ice (between Ice wall & mouth of canyon), Parry Camp (Cliffs east of waterfall near residential neighborhood), Warm Water Canyon (Cliffs east of Hole in the Rock).

Limited Access: La Cantina, Grey Cliffs, The Cave. These areas are legal to climb however landowners may restrict common pathways to access these crags.

Most crags require parking & walking along the narrow canyon road. Approach trails are ad hoc ascending vegetated & talus slopes. Use caution and be mindful.

9th St Main Wall is arguably Ogden’s most popular crag. Access is short & straight forward. It is a common location for group outings and top roping. Some days can be a complete cluster. The gneiss composition and frequent climbing has polished many of the routes. With this being said the crag possess certain redeeming qualities namely the amount of athleticism and techniques required. Stick clip and TR is highly recommended for first timers.

As for the other area crags, Lower 9th offers an excellent teaching/ beginner location and Porter Wall is an available alternative if 9th St is crowded.

A large cliffband along the base of Lewis Peak massif. This area is defined by Garner Canyon to the north & Ogden canyon to the south. Here you will find an assortment of climbing. There are long technical mountaineering style multipitch routes, established mixed lines, notable ice climbs, tough sport lines, historic and difficult trad routes, and world class bouldering up to V14. This area has generally long, steep approaches and technical egress. Expect grade II/III commitment levels, embrace the alpinist mentality, and soak in the views offered by this intimate area.

Unless otherwise noted belays must be built for all multipitch trad. It is advisable to bring extra webbing/cord for belays/repels.

6.2 miles from the last stop sign in town there's a switchback on the dirt road. (It's the second switchback.) Look up the canyon and you'll see a long red cliff. Where the switchback ends, look for a very faint trailhead. Once you're on it, you'll know. It takes about 20 minutes of slow hiking to get to the wall.

A single wall that seems to stretch on to the top of the mountain. Near countless routes exist on this wall.

The road is closed in the winter so you'll have to hike up when there's snow on the ground.

From the last stop sign in town, drive 5.2 miles up the canyon and as the road bends toward the right, and at a cattle guard the wall is right in your face. It's littered with bolts.

Overhanging area that turns into a slab, 3 sets of top rope chains that sit on a great catwalk like ledge.

5.1 miles from the last stop sign in town. There's a great camp sight right off the road. Where the creek crosses under the road, look for a tangle of roots right off the road. That's the trailhead.
