Ascents of The Phantom as Onsight

Was just about getting ready to leave when I was told they had left 3 nuts stuck. Happy to say all 3 came back down with me and only 1 being slightly deformed from my hammering away with a rock and nut tool. Too short to clip the pin before the traverse so had to place two bomber small nuts, think that was my last pro before the anchors so definitely a bit of a runout.

Interesting start and traverse, really did have the lot including a massive run out towards the top, not sure if I missed a placement but at least i could keep my head game going strong.

Looks like all my other 14s are soft.

Last bit of the second pitch seemingly has no or very poor pro. Maybe there was something we missed. Spicy finish to the day.

this has been recommended to me a couple of times - turns out its quite good! felt like the bluies answer to araps classics. i always used to poo poo easy bluies climbs as being uninteresting compared to their araps brethren. but this one can rumble with the best of them!

Questionable grade. Arguably harder I think

Well it's not for the grade 14 leader, but it was nice apart from the unprotected jug finish

Led the first pitch. Bouldery start and nice stemming up the corner. Great little traverse on the second. Lead the first, Marty lead the second.

not a bad way to break out of a few months without climbing outdoors. Good pro all over around the medium cams size until the roof, with the traverse and the top part being almost free of protection. Combined two pitches into one.

Probably should have warmed up before attempting the boulder move at the start... my back seized up before my feet even left the ground.

The journey up the crack was fun and well protected. I skipped the first piton (couldn't even reach up that far?) and used a 0.75 instead as I gingerly swung around the traverse.

Everything from after the traverse is pretty average: poor pro with face moves over a bulge. Is this meant to be the 2nd pitch? It's a shame it can't be skipped.

We descended via the anchors above 'Psychopath'.

Good value on this route. Stiff start then a nice corner crack. Protection for the traverse is poor but fortunately the moves are easy. Another stiff move off the ledge and an exciting runout to the top.

Climbing was sweet, not sure I would have done it if I'd realised the runout at the end XD but that's the beauty of a little overhang, you can't see till you get up there...

Linked both pitches. Traverse was a lot of fun along with the run out headwall.

This route has been talked up as "the scary route" among my friends, and it felt good not getting too rattled on the traverse! if it had more protection it would be a classic for sure!

what a route for your first day trad climbing

Awesome route. Hand traverse is amazing. No gear above? Or was I missing something?

Lead in two pitches to avoid rope drag. Really great!

Oooooo spacey up top!! Great climb.

Great route with a little bit of everything, as stated in the guide. Careful on the head wall, though, no bolts and a good 6m or so before any opportunities for gear. A bad ledge fall if you pitch off at that point... Lead it as one pitch with 120cm runners on the traverse and at the ledge to reduce drag (a little).
