A complex ascent. After several aborted attempts I rope soloed to the carrot under the roof (3.5 pitches). When I entered the roof, two pins blew and I fell and hit the face, injuring my knee. After camping on the ground I bailed. I then had a full-blown nervous breakdown for about a month with my gear still hanging at the belay and a rope fixed to the ground. Anton offered to help me finish the climb, and he led the roof. I led P5, then Anton led P6.

19 Weld Party Sport 80m, 45 Good
Good:

  • The self belay system and process worked well (although I didn't fall)

  • I wore my Yosemite socks

  • Day for it

Bad:

  • So many thin flakes!

  • Haunted by remembered derision from my ex; this was the last climb we did together

  • Elbow and shoulder hurt a lot while jugging

Ugly:

  • Clipping through my cache loop ➰ in the middle of the 19 crux. I got a bit flustered

Didn't find the walk in track at the top and did some bush bashing and an extra rap to get in (needed to walk further north along the well-maintained walking track after coming down from the parking spot). After that was over with, it was a nice climbing experience. Mostly good gear. The crack is pretty vegetated and dirty though.

The first ascent. Dave led P1 and I think P2 as well. I led P3 for the last time with death blocks still in place. I put in some screws to be safer. Dave drilled a screw bolt ladder up to the roof, then we camped on the ground in hammocks. Next morning I started on the roof and was overjoyed when I weighted the first pin and it held me. I put in two more, then very tricky clean aid before it became easier. It was completely outrageous going through that roof, and I was so happy to get through after dreaming about it for years. Dave lowered out our bag and I hauled it up. He cleaned the roof while I blissed out to some drum n bass from my phone. Dave bravely led P5 when it was not at all clear how it should be done or if gear was available. He got through the no-gear section using pins and a couple of screws. He drilled one screw while sitting on a 3mm knifeblade that was only about 20mm into the crack. It was so janky. It was slowly folding while he worked! When he reached the face he had too much drag to be able to climb free. He put a skyhook on a jug, pulled up some armfuls of rope and climbed the rest of the pitch with a huge loop of slack! I seconded half of that pitch, then jugged from the crux. It was up to me to climb P6 but I was super tired. Also it was pretty hot and the holds were very slippery. I climbed pretty slowly, going in hard to gear to rest. Some of that gear was pretty bad. It was a terrifying ordeal. Dave jugged to the belay and I hauled the bag and we shuttled the gear to the cave, both struggling to absorb that at last we'd climbed the whole route.

I really enjoyed this route, it's got interesting climbing and is bolted well. I managed to get myself up there on the third shot today after falling off the last move on the first shot. The crux for me was the crimp n cross thing, but I seem to have finally got it dialled.

24 The Thin Line of Reprieve - with Zac Lazatin Trad 75m Classic
I was happy to second this as my adrenal glands felt like they needed a bit of a break. Thanks Zac for leading it! I enjoyed climbing this route because the layback corner climbing was more interesting than the usual Blueies crimp'n'crank, I had to try very very hard, and the amphitheatre is a beautiful setting. There were some hard parts followed by decent rests, but no full-on ledge rests. My main concern was that footholds would break off, but there were no catastrophic breakages. We climbed out on P2 of Charlie Don't Surf, which I think is the way to go. It was great to bump into Frothy in the car park afterwards for a full debrief!

A great day out in lovely weather. The climb felt much less serious than last time and was just a lot of fun! I was pleased to climb all pitches clean except for the top crux of P2, which I couldn't do at all, even after pulling on and trying maybe three times. Jammies would help next time. I think that P3 is no harder than P4 or 5 and should be graded 22. Zac did very well to climb through the top crux on P2 after a little rest and to onsight P5. We didn't bother doing P6.

I'd dreamed for quite a while of doing Samarkand, but it seemed very daunting because of the sustained difficulty of the pitches, tradness, and the difficulty of bailing after pitch 2. Even climbing with Monty, who'd done it before, I was still nervous about being caught in the sun in the afternoon if we were too slow; it was a very hot, humid day. We met up at 6am and were rapping in by 7. Monty rapped on a 50m rope and could not reach the anchor he was aiming for and had to prussic up to the one above. From there we made it to the bottom in two more raps without further difficulty. We saw Evan down there re-bolting the first pitch and the start of the second. I led P1. I'd like to claim it as my first 23 trad onsight, but there is no way it's 23. I really think it's only 19. Also, I only used one brass nut to protect it, along with more standard gear. I hauled our water and excess gear before belaying Monty up. I led P2 as well. The boulder problem at the start was very slimy and I didn't bother trying to get it free; we were in a hurry after all. After falling off a couple of times I aided through. The rest of the pitch was excellent: steep and exposed with good moves and good gear. I also French-freed the top crux because of slimy holds. I want to go back to try it again. Monty led pitches 3 and 4, and they were a joy to second: really great climbing with a great view. I led pitch 5, and although the difficulty of the climbing wasn't very high, it was hard to find good gear and I pumped out trying to get a nut to seat properly in a pretty bad spot. After a little rest I went to the top. We were out just after midday and were welcomed to lunch ledge by hundreds of march flies and another type of smaller black fly that was also bitey.

Lured by the promise of a three-star classic in the shade. It was shady, but I think three stars is a bit of an over-rating. Much of the climb was a bit sketchy and runout and the crux of P2 was much harder than the rest of it. We had fun though. First pitch was weirdly short. Second pitch was good. It's nice to put cams in horizontal breaks instead of vertical cracks for a change. The crux was hard and I fell off on my first go at it. Pitch 3 had a tough start for Roxy who is of modest stature. Pitch 4 started on quite scary yellow choss with minimal gear, then became a juggy crack. Roxy led pitch 5 and had a sketchy time. I seconded, and with the luxury of the top rope I was able to climb straight through the middle of the overhang at the top. It was rad.

I initially fell off the first pitch because the holds in the traverse were wet. That's my excuse anyway. It was then Mungo's turn to try and he got it clean. I seconded P1 clean and then led the second pitch clean. As usual I barely jammed at all. I intend to come back with a big rack and redpoint the whole thing in one pitch.

Seconding the traverse pitch was seriously "engaging". I was literally hanging on for dear life, visualizing a horrendous swinging fall each time I unclipped a draw and was then faced with another lot of slippery, slopey awkward holds. I led P2 and I agree that it's really great quality climbing. I won't bore you with my list of excuses, but I found it hard and scary. I got mega pumped and had to rest a few times. We watched a thunderstorm drop a torrent of rain between us and Mt Solitary while we climbed and I prayed that we wouldn't get a similar soaking before we got to the top. I'm keen to go back and try to master this route.

19 The Silk Road - with Dave Burt Trad 130m Very Good
A great climb and a very nice outing. Challenging and fun. A bit of loose rock and choss here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary. Pitch lengths are 29, 29, 27 and 22m measured by barometric altimeter

First pitch didn't seem as chossy as some have said. The whole thing is very plentifully bolted. Pretty neat climb

Three sessions. Did the left hand crimp, right undercling beta rather than dyno. Did the top properly on the crimps on the left rather than going up to the right
