Australia Tasmania West Sentinel Range Moonlight Buttress Area
12 ~14 Moonlight Buttress - with Jai Trad 310m Classic Sat 6th Jan 2024
Really great adventure. Rock and climbing was better than I expected. Baked in the sun most of the day. Make sure to take plenty of water. Took double rack from black Totem to #1, extra #0.3, single #2 & #3, hex's, nuts and found this to be almost perfect. Plenty of slings. Maybe just the way I did it, but the bit off the first big ledge felt pretty spicy for a 14.

Single rack of cams to #3 was enough. Counterweight rap we did around a "bulge" to get down was pretty sketchy.

Such a great day out! Used a single 70m rope. Skipped the first pitch, then swung leads. Bolting was good with some further spacing on the lower angled sections, but tighter spacing on the harder bits above ledges. Still plenty of opportunity to let a bit of poop out when you're standing above your bolt with 200m of exposure below that and trying to find your next camouflaged hold. A few hangs at the steep start of P6, then a fall at a thin section up higher. Took a bit of sussing out!

Great route in a mindblowing location. Did both variant pitches. Gear recommendations in the guide were on-point (from someone who likes plenty of gear). Took an extra black totem which did get placed. Hex's did get used. Had a sit at the sport crux on P2, and pulled on a blindly placed cam to get around the bulge up higher! Otherwise clean. Used a single 70m rope. Extended the last piece of gear in the crack, and the first bolt on P4 after the crack, clipped the next one, then downclimbed to unclip the last one. Drag wasn't too bad and the moves are thoughtful, but ok and the anchor isn't too far away.

18 Blue Eyed Son - with Scott Godwin Trad 170m Good Sat 19th Mar 2022
What an adventure! Consistent challenges nearly the whole way, with the second and third bearing the brunt of it. Still not sure if we got off route on the first pitch, but ended up adding an extra hanging belay on the second as rope drag and gear were an issue. Felt like we had to work for every metre of the climb. Hex’s, nuts, #4’s and #5’s got a real workout. Moss and lichen rained on the belayer like Tassie spindrift. Got poked in the eye by a bush. Lucked out with amazing conditions and topped out in the dark to a stunning moonrise over the valley. Good times.

18 17 Barbe Di Vendetta - with Tom Trad 90m Mega Classic Tue 5th Mar 2013
Stunning crack climbing which I'll remember for a long time. Strenuous hands on the first pitch with a tricky little section above the first ledge. Awesome hands to fists, then a beautiful face/corner section followed by the scary little traverse on rattly holds to finish the second. Great twin cracks before the rock goes to crap on the last. Plenty of face holds save you from the widening crack. Day turned into an epic with the descent and lack of water up the wall on a hot, hot day.

Stunning! Probably my favourite climb of the trip. Annoyed that I messed up a nut placement on the first pitch and sat. Way better climbing than it looks. Second pitch was just glorious. What kind of voodoo keeps that block at the top of the second sitting on that ledge! Terrifying.

Split the first into two pitches to share the lead. The most ridiculous hand crack on the first. Then a surprising amount of face-ish bridging on the second.

Trad 45m Mega Classic Sun 23rd Jan 2022
My main goal for the trip. One of those lines that has inspired me for nearly 10 years and had very gradually moved from "no way I'll ever climb that" to "I'll be glad to get to the top on lead" to finally, "maybe I can actually do this". Plug and go was the mantra, which is typically not my strong suit. In the end I think I did my best version of this and it paid off. Miraculously didn't fall off the pumpy start. Milked the mid rest for all it was worth. Cursed the heavy ropes, tenuous bridging and fused crack at the top, then flopped onto the pillar. Very satisfying!

Wow! 1st pitch only, but what a pitch. Yoyo'd my way up, but pleased to get to the top. Need to be stronger on the fingers down low, and keep my head and fitness together for the never ending sustained hand crack above. What a beast!

What a brilliant day out. Stunning weather, great climbing and well protected. I lead 1st and 3rd. Dan 2nd and 4th. Quality slab climbing in an amazing location. Approach notes: After heading left and down at the boulders, walk along under the Suzuki Complex until you reach a sloping polished slab. Push through some shrubs to drop down a little onto the next ledge. Cairn here. Walk south for 10m or so before pushing down through some more shrubs. Left for 5m to a fixed rope around a rock.
