Rough start for the grade, and lots of ways to go wrong. Beta: MAYBE a 16 if you already know to stick to the arete's reach around holds until you can stem. Once there it's a doddle - you can happily get both feet to the other side and almost walk up a meter or two, then easy slab climbing back on the face. You don't even go near the 'secret' pocket hold. But the start still Pumpy.
Entirely different climb if you don't stem, but no way it's a 16 if you don't. |

12 | ★ Something For Kate - with jw, Ethan Parkes | 15m, 6 | ★★ Very Good
The route I took at the start felt so easy that it was almost rock scrambling up a ladder/stairs.. wasn't sure if it was even on-route to do that.. but decided that for the grade it was probably fine.
If you decided to climb the face between the 1st and 2nd bolts, you could easily upgrade the grade on this route by a few points, as it's pretty blank, and then has a little overhang you'd need to get over. (jw did the top part of it pulling through the overhang, though decided the bottom looked too challenging/contrived to bother) Most of the rest of the climb was fairly easy/straightforward, with only a couple of points where I had to stop and think for a minute. Very reminiscent of some of the climbs up at Mount Alexandra in Mittagong. There was one point maybe 3/4 up that had a nice little crack to climb for a metre or so, though it was way shorter than I would have liked. The last move before the anchors is probably the crux, all 3 of us seemed to pause there for a moment considering our options. Compared to the rest of the climb, there didn't seem to be any particularly good options for hands/feet, and so in the end we just sort of mantled up on the less good holds. Theres a nice platform to stand on up the top at the anchors, which makes it really easy to clip/clean. When lowering down it might be worth clipping an extra quickdraw to the rope/your belay loop to keep you on the main line. I didn't, and at one point the rope slipped over the edge into the cave to the right, and I swung pretty hard out that direction. Wasn't too bad, but where the rope ended up felt like it was getting a lot of drag/friction on it as we lowered the rest of the way, so not really ideal for it. This was a really nice/fun/easy climb to finish a long day, and long 3 day trip of climbing. Perfect confidence boost after the fear of retreating from --

14 ~16 | ★ A Fish Called Miltski - with jw, Ethan Parkes | 12m, 3 | ★ Good
The start of this route to the first bolt was so good on big/easy jugs that I free solo'd it just for funsies. It looked like it wouldn't be too hard to climb to the 2nd bolt, and then above that definitely seemed like the crux. Given my confidence on the lower parts (and the fact that it has a couple of bolts in it, although fairly runout), I decided to give it a go even though I haven't tried any trad before. After a quick trad lesson on using cams from jw / Ethan Parkes, I set off.
Easy climb to the first bolt. Placed a gold cam in a crack halfway between 1st and 2nd bolts. Slightly harder but still fairly easy climb to the 2nd bolt. This is where things started getting a lot harder, with a lot of hand jamming along the crack line, and trying to shimmy up between the corner walls. At one point I remember that I wanted to hand jam the crack again higher up, but my forearm was too big to fit in that section of the crack to let me do so. Ended up placing a red cam in the thinner part of this crack, though with the quickdraw on it it ended up only being like 30cm higher than the 2nd bolt. Stayed up in this area for a while, feeling pretty scared and not confident, and not being able to find any good holds/feet. I managed to get maybe a meter or so above the red cam, but was just getting way too sore in my feet/legs, and wasn't confident enough to try and push further as I really didn't want to fall. Eventually my fear and tiredness won out, and I retreated off this climb with a pretty 'well and truly done with it' attitude. Can't tell if it was the fear/pain/etc, being on my first mixed trad, or just being tired from a long day + previous few days of climbing. I reckon I could probably figure this out eventually on top rope, and/or when I was less tired + had more resilience, but I was so done with it on this day that I didn't even want to try it on top rope. Definitely interesting to observe my fear/attitude on this one, as I think this was one of the first times I was properly truly scared + unwilling to even attempt to push through it. --

Pretty challenging start, probably the crux. I accidentally climbed towards/clipped the 2nd bolt on Burnum Burnum (17), and then had to shimmy across to clip the actual 2nd bolt for this route. Was already feeling kind of pumped by then. After that, the rest of the route felt relatively easy compared to the start.

12 | ★★ Philosopher's Stone - with jw, Ethan Parkes | 15m, 6 | ★★★ Classic
Started off trying to go far left and basically walk up the 'steps', but then came back down to the bolts and actually climbed the 'ladder' directly under them like the route seems to intend.
It was a little scary getting into the chimney, as it feels like I ran out of good holds before I was high enough to get my back against the wall, though eventually realised I was high enough to shuffle my shoulders against it. Was still kind of scary for the first few moves as half of my body felt like it was dangling into the void without a solid wall behind it. Climbing the chimney was pretty straight forward, though be careful not to climb too high, as it's easy to climb above the final anchors (if you're at the top of the chimney, you've gone too far). The last move to the anchors is definitely the crux (at least as far as fear factor goes), as you have to give up the safe comfort of the chimney and climb out onto the front face, with what feels like a massive drop beneath you. It was actually pretty terrifying, particularly as you're already above your last clipped bolt. I ended up using a bit of a knee bar to lean and peek out from the chimney just enough to be able to reach the anchors and clip, and it wasn't till I was fully secure and ready to lower that I actually left the chimney itself. --

This line should be called Gimley’s Chimney! Missed opportunity but still a cool line!
Very easy to almost miss the bolts of you are not aware of there location.

I liked the moves down low. Cool holds and then classic jug break line to top. Engaging enough to want flow and work up.

Rad line. Similar to Bubba the Love Sponge near Sloth Area that also goes at 17
Maybe aight easier though.
We did a sling on the first bolt with a stick clip and belayed from ground.

Tricky technical climbing. I was searching for the pocket around to the left but I think I missed it. Felt harder than an 18. Clipped one of the chains and then slipped down. Going to hesitantly claim this one.
