Gostrich is a fine climb, but this isn't a good way to start it. Incidently, the diagonal leads up to the grassy ledge, it's not above it as given in Nick's book.

Chose a (not very) deep water classic for my first solo in 15 months. Some good climbing at the R end.

river needs water in it! low traverse varient at end going from right to left goes at about 20 i reckon - balls of steel required for high level traverse when river is dry... either that or i was at the wrong crag

Really excellent climb! Most fun climb I've done in ages. Water-level was really high (pretty much completely covering all of the non-red rock/greenery in the wide-angle topo photo), combined with murky water made fall seem like bad idea. Climbed from right-to-left, i.e upstream from the Red Cliff end. Maybe it's eaiser when the water is low and reveals more feet, but a few sections of the moves around "first bolt height" were vastly stronger than a 14, maybe 16-17 (and also quite committing, especially the moves around arete near Gostrich, and the sloper-traverse under The Hurt Locker). After traverse we solod/scrambled up choss and steep grass to get back to walking path about 15m down from the gate. Abseiling down from from there and traversing downstream would make for a much less chossy outing, but a good adventure either way - really fun.
