16 | ★ Dogma - with Daniel Smith | 42m, 10 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 22nd Aug 2020
Based on the previous 2 routes we did here, both listed as "16", I felt confident I could lead this. Unfortunately..... it turned out to be a solid 16 & the arthritis was biting. Bailed at the 5th bolt. :-(
16 | ★ Dogma - with Daniel Smith, Genevieve Kieseker | 42m, 10 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 22nd Aug 2020
Almost didn't make it clean! Tough exit.
Good lead by Daniel. |

16 | ★ Dogma - with hilton | 42m, 10 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Tue 1st Sep 2020
Good lead by Hilton.
17 | ★ Karma - with Hilton | 42m, 9 | Mt Maroon | Tue 1st Sep 2020
Good lead by Hilton, good gear placements.
Couldn't manage the crux without a rest. 4.5hrs sleep just doesn't cut it. :-( |
17 | ★ Soft Shoe Shuffle | 30m, 8 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 29th Jul 2006
With Brad. Tricky moves up to 2nd ledge and getting into the chimney, but nice chimney moves.
17 | The Days Of Our Wives | 18m, 8 | Mt Maroon | Average | Mon 17th Apr 2006
Joe started up this one after I took the whipper on a new project & backed off. He was stymied by the lose rock at the top. I went up to the same bolt, but was still too shaken from the fall to finish it. Next time.

15 | ★★ Stigma - with Genevieve Kieseker, Daniel Smith | 45m, 7 | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sat 22nd Aug 2020
Lovely climbing over grippy rock.

14 | ★★ Your Karma Ran Over My Dogma - with Genevieve Kieseker, Daniel Smith | 40m, 7 | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sat 22nd Aug 2020
Brilliant rock, brilliant climbing. Easily the best, so far, at the Grey Wall. Nice confident lead Gen.
22 | ★ Samson | 22m, 4 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 20th Aug 2005
With Steve. Bloody good effort on his part to onsite it. There was no way I was going to get up it without aid.
18 | ★★ Sticks And Stones | 33m, 4 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Wed 26th Apr 2006
Pumped out hanging on while trying to get gear that I'd forgotten passed up to me, so I opted to bail & come back another day & lead it clean.
18 | ★★ Sticks And Stones | 33m, 4 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 21st May 2006
Still couldn't do this sucker clean, but at least I got to the top. Think I'm going for 19, it's pretty thin at the crux. Pt Zell belayed & 2nded.
18 | ★★ Sticks And Stones | 33m, 4 | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sat 29th Jul 2006
Didn't have the strength at all in my arms after Wednesday's huge effort. One rest at the crux, then blasted on thru. Brad agrees with upping it to a 19, it is definitely as hard as P3 of Sunburnt.
24 | ★★ Down With His Pants | 20m, 3 | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Wed 1st Jun 2005
A very tough & serious lead. Doesn't earn a "very good" rating as you can do serious damage taking a fall while clipping the 3rd bolt, hitting the ledge below. I really had to strain to get the moves on this one. The top part, the crack is just a fab. ending with great gear.
20 | ★★ Masters Of War | 20m, 2 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 23rd Jul 2006
Not easy up to clipping 1st BR, & then very thin & sequency moves to 2nd BR, bit easier to top of ledge, but run-out. I'd never have been able to lead it. Brad did it clean on TR tho. Definitely steeper & harder than Fads, Fashions....
21 21 R | ★ Fad's, Fashions & Climbing Politics (Fad's, Fashions And Climbing Politics) | 18m, 2 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 23rd Jul 2006
Nice up to bolt, then very balancy to 2nd bolt, then committing moves to top of ledge. David from Spain belayed & 2nded then Brad showed up & 3rded.
17 | ★ Ready | 40m, 1 | Mt Maroon | Sat 11th Mar 2006
My first lead fall of 2006. Took me about 45min to figure out the first 5m of this route, then my foot slipped. Had Dan lower me so I could start again, but even after some lunch, the tiredness just washed over me in huge waves. I stripped off & went up & cleaned my gear & we lit out for Flavors at 2pm.
17 | FA ★ The Technician | 35m, 1 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 3rd Jul 2008
With Steve. Better than I had expected with some interesting moves around the tree & thru the caves.
17 18 | ★ Ready | 40m, 1 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 18th Mar 2006
I really wanted this onsight, especially after last week's marathon effort. But I had to rest about 7-8m up. It's so sustained I'm giving it an extra grade in the guide. The top was scarey; I was 8m above my last "good" gear, above 2 equalised RPs, when I spied a heaven sent RB to protect the crux move & 10m runout to the top. Dan belayed. 11.3.06 Ghost: My first lead fall of 2006. Took me about 45min to figure out the first 5m of this route, then my foot slipped. Had Dan lower me so I could start again, but even after some lunch, the tiredness just washed over me in huge waves. I stripped off & went up & cleaned my gear & we lit out for Flavors at 2pm.
17 | ★ Nympho P1 | 30m, 1 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sat 17th Jun 2006
Some nice climbing on good rock, but jeeze, bold moves up to & above the FH. The cave itself is very impressive and imtimidating. Simon Voss lead it & Thisrod 2nded.
17 | ★ The Horne Route | 130m, 1 | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 2nd Oct 2005
Back again only Dave forgot his shoes, so we spent the day swapping. Still & all, it was going well, I got thru the demanding 2nd P in style & Dave started up P3 at 2pm, then spent 3.5 hrs on this one pitch! Taking an 8m whipper in the process. We got to a big ledge in the dark & then bailed; abseiling back down - only Dave's 2 headlamps failed him (!), so the walk/scramble out became an epic. Back at the car by midnight. 25.9.05 Dave led P1, I got into tough territory on P2 (still worn out from DII w. Terry yesterday), & ended up aiding it up to a ledge & we called it quits at 3:30. We left my gear there with the promise to return next w/e. 3.9.05 Ben led P1, I got off route on P2, ending up L on Yoni & bailed at 3:30, Ben & I walked out in the dark after 5 abseils!
17 | ★ Mexicana | 60m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Sun 22nd Oct 2006
2nded Brad up p1 of this to the Rocks of Honey ledge, then back down. A ripper of a pitch.
17 | ★ Mexicana | 60m | Mt Maroon | Don't Bother | Sun 29th Jan 2006
First p. is all right, but 2p is pretty yukky. Dan belayed - we walked out leaving the gear for tomorrow as it was getting dark.
16 | ★ Mettiste | 60m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Fri 14th Jul 2006
3rded Rob & Terry up P1 which has great moves, up the layback flake. Then Terry & Rob up part of P2 (too much rope drag), then I lead the last part of P2 to the top. We trundled a large block from P2 corner.
16 | ★ Mettiste | 60m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 1st Jul 2007
Lead pitch one to recheck the grade: For better or worse, it's going down to 15 in my guide. Definitely not a 17.
17 | Yoni | 210m | Mt Maroon | Average | Tue 8th Nov 2005
I lead P1, which is quite nice & straight forward, but cheeses, P2 is vicious. Right off the belay ledge, thin gear and thin holds. Steve took 3 falls & 6 hrs to do this pitch, but some very gutsy leading to get there in the end. I'll have to look elsewhere for the original route. With Steve Turner.

15 16 | ★★★ Ruby Of India | 210m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Sat 22nd May 2004
With Geoff. Got it down to 4hrs this time.

14 | FA ★★★ Kaya | 25m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Sun 18th Jun 2006
We knew at the time it was good, but in retrospect it's definitely a classic.
12 | First Layback | 12m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Sun 7th May 2006
Your basic Frog nightmare. God help any grade 12 leader trying to get up this one - it's more like a 15.
Terry lead it in fine style whilst I struggled just to get on the slabby start.
14 | ★ Bailliere | 36m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 10th Jul 2005
2nd Dave up it. He seemed to find it just as grunty as I did.
16 | FA ★★ Her Bliss | 50m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Mon 2nd Oct 2006
Had this one in my sights for a while now. Aside from the vegetated chimney, the moves were quite nice. Gear was rather finiky & bit run-out in places. Terry patiently belayed in the hot sun, thanks mate, you're a champ!
15 | ★ Illusion | 23m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Tue 25th Mar 2003
2nd Damien up this a nice line. The chimney up the top was the most awkward part tho & on a re-visit I found I couldn't even manage it!
13 | ★ Electric Mud | 10m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Wed 13th Jul 2005
Daniel wanted to lead it, but had to back off so I finished it up. 4.02 OSF Damien belayed. Some nice moves and good gear make for an enjoyable climb.
10 | ★ Sunday Afternoon Walk | 12m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Fri 8th Mar 2002
Andrew Collins belayed my on this one, a nice climb for the grade.
16 | Outlaw | 28m | Mt Maroon | Crap | Sun 29th Jan 2006
Horrible. Crap gear, runout & dangerous above the 2nd ledge. Dan belayed & 2nded.
13 | FA Google | 35m | Mt Maroon | Don't Bother | Sat 25th Mar 2006
Not a line that will ever see a repeat. Dislodged about 4 pieces, one larger than a football had Dan & Dave scurrying for cover. Dave belayed - Dan 2nded.
15 | Deception Link Up Route | 280m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 30th Jun 2005
With Mike Meadows, Greg Sheard & Ricarda Thier - what an honour it was to climb with these guys who climbed with Rick back then just after he put this one up & hear the stories of climbing in yore. Got P5 & 6 better sorted this time, but made the wrong start on P8. Looks do-able but dangerous. The reason, according to Mike, that Rick never repeated it.
20 | ★★★ Cock Crack | 38m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Sun 1st Nov 2009
Wow, what a line. Pity I'm so *%$@ up at the moment, couldn't pull thru those crux moves. Nice gear all the way, just as well I had the #5 & 6 cams with for Pete to use.
16 | ★★★ Deep Throat | 65m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Thu 19th Oct 2006
What an incredible honour it was to do the 2nd ascent of this route (the last ascent being 32 yrs ago!). Probably the 2nd most unique route I've ever climbed! I take my hat off to Rick for putting this one up, and to Rob for his awesome lead. I couldn't even manage the chimney crux without resting 2-3 times, then again at the crux on the face.
21 | FA ★ Thaw | 35m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 16th Nov 2006
Scott made this one look so easy, although I should have been alerted by the fact that he took 10min to prepare for the crux (3 #1 RPs equalised! No thanks!). I had to practically jumar my way up it. And to think, Brad wanted to lead this one!
15 | ★ Mechanical Prune | 18m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Mon 1st Jul 2002
A varied climb with some interesting moves on it. The rotating chock stone scared the shit out of me & Susy caught my fall, nice belaying Suze!
10 | Bread And Butter | 12m | Mt Maroon | Don't Bother | Sun 19th Mar 2006
Had to do this one to check out the crag. Terry got the honour.
15 | ★★★ Ruby Of India | 210m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Mon 1st Apr 2002
With Damien. We started on DI and somehow fluked our way on to the 1st belay ledge of Ruby. P2 went sort of OK, but we belayed too low. I took P3 and ended up setting up a belay in the cave. I then continued up to the corner, but was stymied by the moves there and lack of gear. Damien freaked about this time (it was already 14:30) so we bailed, down climbing P3 to the tree and rapping off that.
16 | Tiger Face Escape Route | 35m | Mt Maroon | Don't Bother | Sun 25th Oct 2009
The walk in practically finished me off. Good effort by Andie & Trent to get up it tho. There's always next time :-|
16 | ★★ Jezebel | 17m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sun 26th Jun 2005
Very nice. Bit thin at the start, but then it eases into a very nice 16. Man am I glad for my tricams, I seem to be finding all sorts of placements for them where nothing else will fit. NZ Mike belayed, then I rapped down & he lead it.
14 | ★ Electric Lead | 26m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Wed 2nd Sep 2009
Meinen Gotten!! My bane, my nemises & I got up it clean & without further damaging the left hand. Just have to approach that crux hold differently. Dave belayed. (The rock fall is super scarey.)
17 | FA ★★ Rob S. Route #1 | 45m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Wed 11th Oct 2006
Very nicely picked by Rob. Aside from the initial friable flake, this is surprisingly good climbing.
15 16 | ★★★ Ruby Of India | 210m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Wed 3rd Oct 2007
With Bruce. He lead all but p2. Glandular is kicking in again, got my knickers in a twist at the crux & had to take the back pack off to get it. Attempted the variant P2 & backed off. Just as well, Bruce tried it on 2nd & couldn't manage it.
18 | Mother Superior | 25m | Mt Maroon | Average | Sun 3rd Jul 2005
Dave chose this one, so it's all his fault! Seriously tho, it's a pretty horrible off-width that eats big gear (my #5 & 6 cams). Dave & I had to aid it.
16 17 | ★ Rocks Of Honey | 60m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sun 10th Oct 2004
1st pitch is very good and the crux had me thinking although the scariest bit was the 4m runout to get to the crux! 2nd P is a bit wandery & scarey. I was rewarded from the day's efforts at Viewpoint with a big blister on each heel from wearing tight shoes on 2 hot days.
19 | ★★★ Infinity | 40m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Sat 1st Mar 2003
Certainly a classic example of a Frog crack. What a line. For God's sake don't tell anyone I TRd this classic line or I'll be ostracised forever by the community! This was with the EFC gang at Frog one Sunday.
15 16 | ★★★ Ruby Of India | 210m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Fri 3rd Oct 2003

15 16 | ★★★ Ruby Of India | 210m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Fri 16th Jul 2004
With Dave. Knocked it off in just over 4hrs.

19 | Alzheimer's Flash | 20m | Mt Maroon | Average | Wed 26th Apr 2006
A good lead by Kevin Pearl. I found it too tough to keep hanging on the tiny crimpers and had to rest at the crux.
18 | ★★★ Resurrection Corner | 25m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Tue 1st Oct 2002
This is such a tough & sustained climb, it really should have a grade or two added. 2nd Patrick up this one and had several rests to get up it.
18 | ★★ Gladiator | 20m | Frog Buttress | ★★★ Classic | Wed 23rd Jul 2008
After Craig. Fell my way up it. Should do this more often to get that jamming technique down.
18 | ★ Marshmellow | 30m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Wed 17th May 2006
After I bailed at the crux, Brad did a very nice lead on this one. Somewhat pissed off at myslelf for being such a wimp - I cruised up it on 2nd.
19 | FA ★ Icicle | 35m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 16th Nov 2006
Bloody wind was howling a gale, I honestly don't know how Scott got up it without being blown off. Man it was cold! Gear is small & finicky = had to rest several times to get it out.
17 | FA ★ Rob S. Route #2 | 20m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 12th Oct 2006
Bit hairy with the crux below the first gear, but good after that flake.

20 | ★★ Egotistical Pinapple | 14m | Frog Buttress | ★★ Very Good | Tue 1st Oct 2002
I did get 2/3 the way up this one on lead before I ran out of steam and ended up TRing it. Susy belayed and I lost her wedding ring - yeah gods, what a day!
17 | ★★ Big Mac VF | 35m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sun 23rd Jul 2006

15 | ★★ Dream Run | 15m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Wed 7th May 2008
Woohoo! Finally!! Went back after 10mths away and the gear was still on it - how cool is that??? No where near the 18 I thought it would be, 2nd time round, but definitely a quality route.
17 | ★ On Safari P2 | 36m | Mt Maroon | Average | Sat 26th May 2007
Terry lead it in fine style. P1 is such masochism, but then you get to pitch 2, and what a joy those twin cracks are.
17 | ★★ Ghostly Hand | 15m | Mt Maroon | ★★★ Classic | Wed 17th May 2006
Brad took a fall at the crux. The crux on this is exactly the same move as that on Big Mac.
15 | Lizard Lair | 10m | The Mushroom | Average | Thu 5th May 2005
Started on this one first up, but couldn't get up it, so I did some others & came back in the afternoon. The gear is good despite the rock looking very doubtfull (I placed nests of small gear), but was very grungy up the top - thick with vegetation & moss. Took a 4m whipper when 1 of my pieces poped. Peter did an excellent job of belaying - owe you 1 mate! Owen 2nd - Dan did a cop out!
17 | FA ★★ The Scream | 23m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sun 8th Oct 2006
Terry spotted this one & it turned out to be a winner!
18 | ★ Obscured By Clouds | 45m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 4th Jul 2004
Dave & I trudged 2hrs into this unique crag. Dave led up it in fine style and I struggled and grunted my way up this fine finger crack line. lots of loose rock on this one kept me dodging on belay.

18 | ★★ Nothing Much | 20m | Mt Maroon | ★★ Very Good | Sat 17th Jun 2006
3rd Thisrod & Simon Voss up this, but found it very hard going, the thin finger crack start would not accept my stubby fingers, and the arm bar higher up, just wore me out. But what a great line.
17 | ★★ Bread And Jam | 18m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Sun 19th Mar 2006
Terry did a good lead on this, knowing we did not have the big gear needed to adequately protect the crux. Terry's cam got jammed & my foot slipped as I contorted around to get it out - damn! But looking back, I like the moves on this one - short & sweet.
15 | FA Scarface | 55m | Mt Maroon | Average | Sun 23rd Apr 2006
P1 40m 15 watch the loose block at the start.
P2 15m 10 up the crappy rotten rock on the R. Would have cleaned it, but our gear was directly below.
After the whipper I took the first time with Joe Lynch belaying, I had to go back next week & retreive my gear & had the chance to finish it then. Surprisingly it actually overhangs by almost 2m. Probably the better of the 3 routes I've put up at Graveyard.
Dave was the willing victim this time.

15 | Let it Bleed | 25m | Frog Buttress | Don't Bother | Sun 7th May 2006

15 | ★ Jam Session | 9m | The Mushroom | ★★ Very Good | Thu 5th May 2005
Very good climbing all the way, lovely hand crack above the overhang. I took a 3m fall from above the overhang, but at least it was clean & I had 3 pieces in at the overhang so I felt pretty secure about taking it. Peter did an excellent job of belaying. Dan & Owen 2nd & 3rd.
15 | ★ Bad Company | 20m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Sun 22nd May 2005
Had to have another go at this climb, but couldn't get my head around the crux move & had to rest on some gear, stupid me, I should have pushed thru, there was a very good rest just above. Sept 2002 2nd Susy up this one back then when she was just starting to fall in love with Frog. Found the crux rather daunting - bit thin on gear & haven't been back since to Red Point it.
16 | ★★★ Satans Smokestack | 40m | Frog Buttress | ★ Good | Sat 23rd Aug 2003
The start has some interesting moves. Damien & I had a go at it back in 2002 & he backed off the first bit. Geoff took me up this time and I certainly couldn't handle that chimney without a rest. No plans to go back & lead it either!!! (thank you very much.)
15 | Deception Link Up Route | 280m | Mt Maroon | ★ Good | Thu 24th Jun 2004
With Dave. The rock on this one is far more consitent & interesting than Deception I, but the bushy terraces detract from the quality of the whole. All went well until P6, then we lost our way & ended up on DI, it was getting late, so we topped out on P8, 9, 10 & 11 of DI.

I'd spotted this line after 2nding Terry up Kaia, but couldn't pull it off. With lots of rock coming off, just didn't trust that flake above the horizontal break & the nasty run-out to the top. Rob lead it in style.

Still had to grovel my way up this exposed but great climb 8.6.05 OSF Did this with Andy. What a great climb, definitely worth the 2*. The factor 2 into space is pretty heady, then I pumped out getting in 4 pieces of gear in about 2m of crack, so I down climbed back to the ledge, rested, then blasted the sucker! The gear's bomber all the way & what exposure! I'm pretty stoked about it too. I've been rather depressed that so many new climbers overtake me, but then, witnessing the recent accident at Frog, I'm very content to have 1) My health 2) Never had a serious climbing injury & 3) These last 5 16s have been fabulous consolidation, rather than chasing grades.

With Terry. The biggest problem was trying to retrieve the cam.

I 3rd Susy & Ben up this one, on which I did my best to imitate a beached whale. The Glandular Fever was setting in at this point in my career - not good.

Not a bad line. I lead (Red Pointed) Wiches to get to this ledge & the unnamed 5m climb & Dave lead this one, but in my weakened condition I couldn't make it without a rest tho.

I had 2nd Damien up this one back in 2002 when I failed specatacularly to nail P2 - a horird nasty chimney thingy. Dave belayed me up this one & we then went to Falki which Dave lead in nice style.

With Dan. Pity I couldn't get that top bit, would have made the finish a bit more interesting.

Didn't think I could make this one after bombing out on Shit Heap, but the moves on this just slotted into my style very nicely. Andy belayed & 2nd'd - Daniel 3rd'd.

A nice climb, but some loose rock and scree here and there. I downgraded it to a 15 in the guide.

I lead it after Scott. It's a lot nicer than it looks from the ground. I challenged myself to set different gear in different spots than Scott had, but having him critic my gear/placements was awesome. Scott 2nded.

Don't know what the F "runout" Andy was talking about when he lead this 3 years ago, there's gear all over the place! I got something like 20 pieces of gear in! Had to dog it unfortunately, think the GFs coming back ;-( Ron 2nded clean.
