I think we were doing a harder start, or maybe just J-Tree stuff, but way harder than 5.7 start. Took a few hangs, then got rest easily.

5.7 The Swift Trad 120m Joshua Tree National Park Classic

Classic climbing. Stiff difficulty for the grade, in my opinion. Several places where leader needs to protect second from swing. If you're not careful, you can quickly get off-route on first two pitches.

I'm a burgeoning 5.7 trad leader and I found a couple moves on this one pretty heady. The crack is flared and I honestly found a couple of the placements kind of tough.

Completely nails. People trying this as a run and jump has made the feet at the start so glassy you can barely stand on them. Very unfortunate. Still a classic line up a classic feature though.

5.12b Vanishing Point - with Klara R Trad Joshua Tree National Park Average
Fabian Michel
Thu 2nd Mar 2023
Potentially good, but the top layer of the rock is crumbling off in many places, so I decided not to try again. Quite well protected by bolts apart from the lower part where I was also not so sure about my placements because the rock didn't seem particularly solid.

Very nice route. Tried in lead once, but finding out the beta after the third bolt was too hard in lead for me, because I fell every time in the crack below the small belly. Two tries after that in toprope.

got absolutely nuked on this. everything went wrong, had a fat trad whip, the works. Ended up walking to the top, belaying my second up and rapelling down the sport route climber's left.

5.8 5.6 Penelope's Walk (Penelope's Wlak) Trad 27m Joshua Tree National Park Don't Bother
David Gibbs
Thu 20th Dec 2012
I tried it. Tried about 3 different starts until I found one that worked -- actual described start was way too hard for a 5.5 (Miramontes rating). Found the gear not confidence inspiring, the rock crumbly with lots of gravel. I made it about 3/4 of the way, before finally bailing, hiking up, rapping in and recovering my gear.

Not recommended as a climb.

5.12b Satanic Mechanic — 4 attempts - with Klara R Sport 15m Joshua Tree National Park Classic
Fabian Michel
Sun 5th Mar 2023
Excellent overhanging sport route. Good holds in the lower part and up a crack, then the most difficult part: a face climb on small holds, which are also a little sharp. It got quite windy on my second try and I was just too cold to climb the route. Third and fourth try were still cold but at least not windy. Fell at the absolute last hard move because my right hand slipped off the hold.

5.12a Blood of Christ — 2 attempts - with Klara R Unknown Joshua Tree National Park Very Good
Fabian Michel
Fri 3rd Mar 2023
Protection by bolts is okay, but there is a scary (at least for me in the onsight) mantle about one and a half meters above the last quickdraw. The holds are quite sharp. One try to put in the quickdraws where I didn't really try the moves (confidence a bit low after the last route), and one try on toprope where I actually did every move on the first try, so it's definitely doable. Might come back later

5.12a Tic Tic Boom - with Klara R Sport Joshua Tree National Park Very Good
Fabian Michel
Wed 8th Mar 2023
Bolts are a bit rusty, but they held all my falls, some from more than a meter above the quickdraws. The crux is a single, far move to get to a hold next to the third bolt (at least the way I climbed the route). Nice climbing in the last third of the route on jugs in a vertical face.

5.11c Hot Legs Contest (Jugline) — 3 attempts - with Klara R Unknown Joshua Tree National Park Very Good
Fabian Michel
Fri 3rd Mar 2023
Crux from second to third bolt. Somehow had no endurance at all today and just couldn't climb it from the ground, was out of breath after just a few moves. Quite a nice route, though.

5.11c More Monkey Than Funky - with Klara R Unknown Joshua Tree National Park Very Good
Fabian Michel
Sun 5th Mar 2023
90° overhanging roof of about 5 meters with a hand crack and then a vertical finger crack after the lip, trad apart from a bolted anchor. It was a bit hard to try the moves while also having to put in the cams, so I mostly aided the roof. Jam technique, particularly for the feet, was also definitely lacking. Then, there is a really good kneebar before some more hard moves until your feet are above the lip.

5.9 ~5.10c Loose Lady — 4 attempts Sport 30m Joshua Tree National Park
Sam North
Mon 17th Oct 2022
Looks like a hold has broken below the first bolt, making the first bulge a lot more difficult than 5.9. I have 4 tries at this and I know I can climb 5.9 on-sight.

5.5 Bat Crack Trad 55m Joshua Tree National Park

I did the route with aid clibing, sitting in the rope and in toprope . But also in toprope removing the cams is quite hard and you would fall to the next cam after removing one, since it is a roof. Did not do the moves when going into the roof and also in the finger crack above the roof I could not do the jam and had to pull on a cam. I can only imagine that the moves might be nice. Very hard, especially if you are not used to crack climbing. Of course I cannot say for sure that it is harder than 5.11c, but certainly it felt for me that way.
