攀登 of Route from Wedding Cake to Cape

What a day! Slept under the stars at the lookout the night before. Rapping at 6:15. Route finding all went well. Didn't feel like we were slow, but must have been as we didn't get back to the packs at the top of the rap gully till about 10:15. Trudged back to the car because of forecast rain. Said rain did arrive, so ended up driving back to Hobart as well. Mega day!

Stegasaurus was nowhere near 55m the way we did it. Maybe because we skirted around a couple of pillars to find the "squeeze through to the big spike" bit. Worked well. Chimneys were ok and protectable with slings. Especially if you're tall enough to reach the first spike before comitting to the step across.

Little Jaycar walky talkies were super helpful. No problems with comms all day.

Stegosaurus pitch is pretty wild!

Stegosaurus pitch was great and protects okay with some slings. Depending on provider you can call/text to communicate between belays

Walked then belayed on scramble to rap bolts. Better to go unroped and carefully for time. Rapped down and walked to cairns. Short break as we had taken 5hr from the start of the first rappel to here. Lost here for 2 hr unsure where the stegosaurus pitch started. The crag description that I didn't read is much more helpful than the guidebook here. Eventually realised the correct way was through squeeze corridor up to very exposed easy terrain. Decided to turn back as time had run out.

It's just scrambling and walking and a bit of abseiling but the views and experience were just amazing. If this was a hike it would be up there with the best of them.

I didn't realise (though in hindsight it's obvious) that we needed to stay high up on the spine of the Wedding Cake and ended up having to backtrack after going too low. This cost us a lot of time faffing around with ropes and anchors and traversing around.

In the future, I think I'd only rope up for the downclimbs, and everything else we'll just crawl across carefully. You can't spend too much time up here because the whole trip takes so long as it is.

We had already decided to call it a day because it was 1PM by the time we found the rap bolts on the other side, but we abseiled down anyway just to see where we would go next time.

I don't recommend taking a backpack, I regretted it the whole trip. Next time we're just taking the rope bag, snacks, camelbak, and some first aid/emergency blankets. The packs can stay at the top of the descent gulley and wait.

By the way, how on Earth can this only have two stars? Have people been doing this blindfolded?

Fun little adventure down the cape. Complete with a bit of rope faff, some exposure and an inability to see bolts. Stegosaurus pitch went surprisingly smoothly on the way down, we don't need to talk about the return trip. Unlike what thesarvo suggests, a 70m rope was not in fact enough to rap down to the ledge below the pillars, though it got me very nearly there, enough for me untie the knots and rap past the end and walk over.

Be careful finding the path. Follow the notes on the instructions carefully. Also the stegosaurus starts much closer to the end than you might think. From the final corner there's one false chimney then the one you want. Currently cairned.

On the way back, I soloed up the chimney to the bolts then we both soloed the wedding cake back to the rap anchors, got the rope stuck rapping off rain of terror, then got muddy and gross on the jug up the fixed line in the gully. Ran out of water on the hike out, so we switched to the hip flask. Got back to the car sloshed at 12.20am. I slept well.

This whole thing is a bit mental. Sketchy traverse with no gear and severe lack of food and water, at the end of this pitch it was 3pm we had started at 7am.

why are the rap anchors so god damn hard to find???? kinda fun even if you are just soloing with a rope

Such a great access traverse!

Fun scrambling along the Stegosaurus pitches. Nothing too hard, but worth roping up. If you fall, try to dodge the seal colony.

Great fun but do your research as you don't want to get lost. I would suggest roping up and leading or alpining all the scrambles as falling would result is a serious incident.

Using radios makes this much nicer

A lot of fun, even though the return became a bit of an epic, too long a story for here.

This is adventure scrambling and chimney-ing at its best. Several no fall zones made this exciting
