If you were at Orroral Ridge or in the valley on this day, and heard someone getting murdered in the bush, it was actually me grating my body up this off-width crack. Bit of an awkward start, with a doable beginning section that I managed to climb clean. Getting through the overhang/squeeze section is what made me lose my shit. Once I fought my way through that after nearly giving up, the top-out was surprisingly pleasant.
This climb is well-protected, which is the only way I got through it. There are double bolts and a chain at the top with a comfortable ledge/bench seat for belaying. Great views of the valley at the top. |

Last time I (or possibly anyone) will do this route.
After having a few goes on it, I pulled past the second bolt and took a regulation fall. The dogbone of my draw on that bolt had rubbed sufficiently on the rounded edge just below the bolt that when I fell it snapped. The bolt below that then pinged off the wall, and I fell nearly 10 metres. Fortunately I bounced off my heroic belayer's shoulders and slammed into some rocks. This accident could very easily have been a lot worse.
The nature of the bolting on this route lends itself to either the rope or the quickdraws rubbing against the coarse rock. There is no way to protect this route without the potential for large swings that grind your life-saving equipment against jagged edges. I would suggest taking extreme caution to protect your draws and rope before trying this route. Extending the draws mitigates the rope drag on the edge, but you should also consider a protective material between the dogbone and the rock. You will also need to replace the first bolt, due to its rapid departure from the wall. |

Amazing route - well worth doing on its own if you can find the top of it. Have to say it felt exceptionally sustained for a 15. There's a decent 12 to 15 m section of continuous jamming/laybacking with no rests. I had to bump a few cams and if you told me it was a 17 I'd believe you! Made it about halfway up before resting. The top stays very wet after rain and I basically bellyflopped onto the slick belay ledge for a break. Jason did a sterling job grunting his way up, spurred on by threats of having to rap back down to the bottom and walk out! Starting P2 is also much more challenging after rain. Everything was glassy smooth but somehow neither of us came to grief. Awesome experience and one for the repeat tick list if I ever get stronger.

Insanely good day out! Arrived to find the bottom gate closed, which added an extra 6 km of hiking to our trip but helped burn off those Christmas calories. Crashed about at the top looking for rings and eventually rapped down what turned out to be Nothing Left. First two pitches were immense. Can't be many climbs where you get to jam, layback, bridge and then slab all in the first 40 m! Made a minor error overkeenly reading the topo description and thought I had to climb the thin crack splitting the slab to reach the layback section. Made for a nice bonus pitch coming back down and I'd say is similarish in difficulty. The traverse on P3 was epic and made sure Jason's first multi will be remembered. Pitch 4 is not to be underestimated... The diagonal rightwards crossing of the break is tricky to get on and off, and I couldn't figure out any way to protect it against a ledge fall. In hindsight I'd recommend putting something in on the left before starting out, even though it feels way off line, but I might have missed something. After that it's miles of bush-bashing that had me wondering what was going on, but then I saw P5 and everything made sense! P5 is brilliant - more on that below. The whole thing was very much worth the trek, but in retrospect I'd hesitate taking a beginner up it again, even if they are strong like Jason.

12 ~13 | ★ Cocolossal - with Tim McIntyre | 15m | Average | ||||
Off-width crack at the bottom with very few options for feet outside the crack, eventually narrows into a hand crack with more solid foot holds outside the crack. Don't be like me - learn off-width technique before tackling this climb. I must have spent at least a half an hour flailing on the first few metres of off-width, thankfully I had a very patient belayer. Once I broke out of the off-width it was fairly smooth sailing for me until the top section. I used my first ever double-fist jam.
I ended up topping out left on the finish for Breakaway instead of right for Cocolossal. I was exhausted from wrestling the crack and didn't feel I had it in me for the roof. The off-width had also eaten my big cams and the roof looked like it needed some. The layback finger crack on a slab finish for Breakaway is much more pleasant than it looks from the ground - however the top out is deceiving. I assumed the top of the boulder was just around the corner, but when I came around the corner I found myself awkwardly straddling a saddle with a couple metres of thin crack and slab still to go. Having missed the rap rings at the top of Cocolossal due to my alternate finish, we walked off. If I ever come back, I would be keen to lead Breakaway, which looks far more pleasant overall. Maybe once I learn off-width technique I'll try Cocolossal again and lead it in under an hour. |

Yeah legit what an adventure. Picture this (dont picture this if youre going for the onsight): you know the anchors above your head somewhere, youre in a little corner on a thin ledge with a roof over your head and a smooth slab to your right. Where do you go? You consider your only other direction. Left. A blank arete. Nothing there. Unless.. you look around the corner and see a flake with a finger crack in the back that goes o the top. A footer appears on the arete that wasnt there before. This crazy escape might yet be possible. Stuff a couple golden rolands into a pin scar and tell yourself itll hold a pendulum, pull around the corner with right toe pinned to stop the barndoor. Finger lock slash gaston left hand bomber. Inhale. Pull right hand around arete, making sure not to hit self in the face, and tip into layback. A sequence as unique as the after the goldrush traverse in freycinet. Integral crack was less unique but super elite as its reputation suggests. An elderly couple on a hike got a shock with timmy taking a cartwheel off the crux just as they arrived.

Stoked to start trying hard again! First crack at a 23 on gear as well. Few falls on this due to non-commitment but its all there and all goes, start is a bit of a goey boulder problem

no one:
me, a trad noob: I'm gonna lead the trad hand jam roof pitch! An excellent climb with an entertaining combination of hand and fist jams, a chimney, some laybacks and also a hand jam roof section! The slabby feet for the roof jam were slick with seepage which made it a pure roof crack climb, beyond my current abilities. I will have to come back with better foot jam technique to reattempt the second pitch. Also there is a surprise third pitch of choss to top out if you don't want to do some unprotected traverse to finish off on Thor |

The purest onsight attempt I’ve had. No chalk to show the way - just the rock (and that one random tick mark).
Missed the onsight, but I absolutely loved the chance to try something hard without chalk beta |

Seconding this I had to take trying to remove the black totem ole mate Jake Dalmeny placed in his onsight lead. So that told me I wasn't ready to lead it yet. Amazing climb, very fingery, all finger jams, locks, etc. Great aesthetics. Lucky to have been there alongside Mr Climbing Gym Duncan Brown who gifted us lots of positive vibes, stories and best of all, the use of his 11mm TR Solo line to abseil back down.
