- Summary:
-
Sport climbing, Bouldering and other styles
Lat / Long: 47.172015, 11.166882
summary
Western Austria represents the 2 provinces Tyrol and Vorarlberg, a very mountainous region with endless climbing possibilities and excellent infrastructure.
description
A substantial part of the Eastern Alps is located in Vorarlberg and Tyrol. From a climbers perspective it is probably hard to find an area with more variety and options on such a small area. World class bouldering areas can be found next to world class sport climbing areas, multi-pitch climbs line alpine peaks and cliffs and there is everything, from family friendly and easy climbing to lines at the top of the grade range.
With Innsbruck as its biggest town and climbing mecca Western Austria is a must visit for every climber.
Topos and climbing information for some areas in Tyrol can also be found here: at http://www.climbers-paradise.com

- Summary:
-
Alpine climbing, Sport climbing and Rock climbing
Lat / Long: 47.312616, 10.399519
description
The Wolfebnerspitzen (2427m) provide all kinds of plaisir and alpine sport climbs. Most of the rock is very good Dolomite. The length of the routes vary between 100 and 350 meters and they are very well protected by bolts.
There are a lot of climbs in the intermediate grades which makes the area perfect for alpine beginners. Additionally there are some single pitch routes to get used to the rock and height above sea level. On top there are some harder routes above the 7th UIAA grade.
approach
Park at the Elbigenalp, Geierwallyparkplatz (no fee). Follow the hiking trail towards Kasermandel and Herrmann-von-Barth-Hütte 3h. From the hut in 15 minutes to the routes.

1.1.4. Biberkopf 6 routes in Crag
- Summary:
-
Mostly Trad climbing
Lat / Long: 47.269360, 10.231363
description
The Biberkopf is a 2599m high mountain in the Alps on the border between Germany and Austria.
From the Rappensee Hut and from Lechleiten (near Warth) marked routes run up the Biberkopf. These take about 2.5 to 3 hours. Both ascents cross exposed sections of steep rock and scree, which is why sure-footedness is required. Due to the installation of wire cables and other climbing aids the climbs may be attempted by less able climbers (UIAA grade I). An ascent is not advisable in wet weather or conditions of snow and ice. Patches of snow remain year-round on the northern slopes. The routes to the summit are maintained by the German Alpine Club's branch at Obergünzburg, which belongs to the section at Kempten/Allgäu.
history
The south face of the Biberkopf was first climbed in 1922 by the Allgäu alpinist, Hermann Grosselfinger. Source Wikipedia

access issues
No restrictions.
approach
Leave the Rheintalautobahn at the junction Dornbirn Nord and follow the signs into direction "Bregenzer Wald". Follow the L200 (Bregenerwaldstraße) for about 25km, drive through Alberschwende, Egg, Andelsbuch and pass Bersbuch until you reach a roundabout. Turn right and cross the Bregenzer Aach river. After the bridge take the first exit on the left.
Alternatively leave the Rheintalautobahn at the junction Dornbirn Süd, drive into the city center of Dornbirn and follow the L48 via the Bödele until you reach the village Schwarzenberg. In Schwarzenberg keep right (don't drive towards Egg). Stay on the L48 until you reach the exit on the right, just before the Bregenzer Aach bridge.
As an early bird you may park directly at the crag. To do this keep right until you reach the crag. This is a dead end road.

summary
Noisy roadside crag with a sunny, lower tier offering 4 or 5 good routes. The upper tier is mostly sun-sheltered but only offers mediocre routes and a practice belay. Encouraging holiday bolting.
description
Goldbichl consists of two, south-facing tiers. The lower tier offers some short, vertical to overhanging, juggy routes on good rock. The rock-quality in the upper tier is not as good and the routes are mostly in the lowest grades. Some look chossy and some are quite odd.
The upper tier can be a good place to practice rope technique and multi-pitching in easy terrain. There's a belay at the base of "no name 1" and all other unnamed routes are 2nd pitches of "no name 1".
Shade: The lower tier comes into shade in late afternoon. The upper tier is sheltered by large trees and offers almost full shade all day.
The routes are well protected and apparently the routes in the lower tier have been complemented with additional bolts. All routes have a two-bolt belay and a clippable lower-off.
In the middle of the upper tier there's a short boulder section with old, permanent boulder-mats abd matresses. Apparently frequently used by locals or an alpine club.

description

The Kaiser Mountains (German: Kaisergebirge, lit. "emperor mountains") or just Kaiser, are a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps and Eastern Alps. It consists of two main mountain ridges – the Zahmer Kaiser ("gentle or tame emperor") to the north and the Wilder Kaiser ("wild or fierce emperor") to the south. description
where to stay

ethic
Please follow common sense and local rules as this area was threatened with closure. Don't block roads, take your garbage out and respect land owners! Actually it shouldn't be necessary to mention any of that .
history
Climbing started here in the 1980's. The sectors were developed by many different route setters. Even though most of the bolting is very well done, some of the routes may still have "old" bolts - please judge for yourself.

description

- Summary:

Sport climbing, Rock climbing and Trad climbing
Lat / Long: 46.974226, 10.046015
description
A nice, quiet, little crag with shelter, BBQ/firepit, portable/drinking water, grass and playground for children. You hear river Ill, but pay attention for kids: The water level may change quickly due to water works! On sunny days without wind, quite hot, especially in the afternoon when the dark stone had time to heat up.
Route names are written on the wall. Most bolts are matching up to date standards, some are older custom made - but look reliable. Bolt distance varies. At the very bottom, there is a bolt for "too light" belayers. The lower offs are rings, linked to two bolts via chain, and next to it another single bolt for redundancy (sometimes it's the last bolt being very close to the lower off). The rock consists of layers but is mostly solid, and has many cracks.
A topo has been issued by Bergrettung Partenen at http://bergrettung.partenen.net/images/klettergartenfuehrer.pdf (893kbytes) but is of limited use because it is quite outdated: Several newer routes are missing, some routes like Hollanditus have been bolted, some routes like Krafträuber changed due to massive part of rock having been removed for security reasons.

description
The climbing area Bürs is located in the lowest part of the Brandner valey, which is drained by the Alvier creek. In its lowest reaches the valey contains very interesting type of rock, the Bürser Konglomerat (conglomerate of Bürs). Carbonate rocks occur on the left flank of the valey near the exit, where you find the sectors "Steinbruch" and "Bürser Platte". The sectors "Bürser Verschneidung", "Große Wand", "Großer Überhang" and "Rumpelkammer" are situated in the Bürser conglomerate. Climbers which are not frequently climbing on conglomerate will need to get used to it. The rock structure changes in the different geological packages and you can have very often sections with crimps and holes with sharp edges as well as slopers and slopy holes, but also buckets and pockets of various size. The cement is fairly stable and the rock in the routes is in general of a good quality. Due to different erosion of the different packages the steepness changes from overhung through vertical to ramp. For the same reason some routes could be also "sandy". In many potential holds you find some spider-like creatures, probably harvestmen (daddy longlegs, opiliones). They are very peaceful and not dangerous. Just watch for them and try not to hurt them
The Alvier gorge (Bürser Schlucht) is worth hiking. There is a nice path from the crag up to the village Bürserberg. Nice approach if you are staying at Heidi's campsite At hot days one could cool down in the Alvier creek
Geological description: (mainly adopted from Ostermann et al., 2006)
Conglomerate is a sedimentary rock formed from rounded clasts cemented together in a matrix. The rounded shape of the clasts indicates that they have been transported some distance from their original source, for example by a river or glacier. The cement that binds the clasts could be composed of calcite or silica for example. The Bürser Konglomerat is a fluviatile succession up to about 140 m thick. It is underlain by a lodgement till with striated clasts of metamorphic rocks (the age of that basal till is not known). Today, the Bürser Konglomerat is incised by a gorge of the Alvier. In its lower part, the succession of the Bürser Konglomerat consists of mainly subhorizontally-bedded coarse-grained gravelly to cobbly conglomerates dominated by very well- to well-rounded clasts. The clasts mainly are middle to upper Triassic neritic carbonate rocks derived from the Northern Calcareous Alps in the drainage area of the Alvier creak. Clasts of lower Triassic siliciclastics (Alpiner Buntsandstein), of Jurassic deep-water limestones (Adnet Group), and of metamorphic rocks are subordinate in abundance (Ostermann et al., 2006 and references therein). The metamorphic rocks clasts within the Bürser Konglomerat probably are derived from erosion of the older lodgement till below the conglomerate succession. Internally, the Bürser Konglomerat is arranged in indistinct, roughly symmetrical upward-coarsening to upward-fining packages that are vertically separated by thin intervals of arenite; the cyclic packages, however, locally are truncated and incomplete. There are different controversial hypothesis in the geological literature regarding the accumulation history of the Bürser Konglomerat. A relatively recent thorium-uranium dating by Ostermann et al. (2006) of calcite cements yielded a probable cementation age of 128 ± 10 ka for the Bürser Konglomerat. This suggests that the succession accumulated during the Riss Glacial, as a result of blocking of the fluvially-shaped (V-shaped) lower reaches of the tributary valley during advance of the Ill glacier along the trunk valley. Ostermann et al. (2006) suggest that the age-dated calcite cements of the investigated conglomerates precipitated during termination of the Riss glacial to the earliest Eemian. The precipitation of cements most probably took place during deglaciation, when the tributary valleys still were blocked by ice, or dead ice, in the trunk valley. Cement precipitation during early deglaciation may have been favoured by exposure of large areas of glacial till, leading to meteoric groundwaters of relatively high content in dissolved calcium carbonate. Near the exit of the valley, the Bürser Konglomerat onlaps a vertical cliff of middle Triassic carbonate rocks that represented the left flank of a bedrock gorge.
Geological literature: Marc OSTERMANN, Diethard SANDERS & Jan KRAMERS (2006) 230Th/ 234U ages of calcite cements of the proglacial valley fills of Gamperdona and Bürs (Riss ice age, Vorarlberg, Austria): geological implications. Austrian Journal of Earth Sciences, V. 99, 31-41.

summary
The Zillertal is a paradise for outdoor activities, amongst them all styles of climbing. From bouldering to sport climbing and alpine multi-pitch climbing and even ice climbing in winter.
description
The Ziller valley (Zillertal) stretches south from the Inn valley (Inntal) into the Zillertaler Alpen. Various side valleys (amongst them beautiful Zillergrund) add to its attractivity and climbing options. Climbing can be found in the valley bottoms as well as high up to the highest peaks. While most climbing is on granite, Zillertal also offers some limestone climbing as well as some gneiss.
You may climb year round due to the various exposures and crags on different altitudes. However, the warmer seasons are probably nicer for a visit focussing on climbing.
While many crags have a lot of history, there is still a lot of development ongoing, so watch out for new additions at existing crags but also completely new developments all along the valley.
Crags are sorted geographically as you drive into the valley.
Boulderinformation refers to the Zillertalguidebook by Markus Schwaiger
access issues
Some crags are on private land, please behave accordingly in order to maintain access. Also, certain crags experience seasonal closures, please be informed!
approach
Zillertal and its main town, Mayrhofen are easily reached from Innsbruck (about an hour drive).
where to stay
This is one of the most touristy places in Austria. You can find all sorts of accommodation, from camp sites to luxury hotels. Be aware that during high season - mostly summer, but also major public holidays and ski season - the whole valley can be quite crowded.
history
It started all before the 1980's when mountain guides like Gerhard Hörhager senior and Andreas Aschenwald trained on the granite towers in front of the restaurant Breitlahner (now called "Ewige Jagdgründe"). In 1983 Darshano L. Rieser and Gerhard Hörhager junior freed the hitherto teaid climbed Schotterriss and called it "Sechsplosion". Redpointing was introduced to the Zillertal. Since then the development hasn't stopped.
