An adventure, AKA "Awesome Mixed Route Vol 1" or "Honey, Ibogaed My Kowhai". The start of DHMK is dirty to the point where the crack is almost hidden. Standing on lichen while digging out a crack ain't awesome. The second pitch (Iboga) looks great and is a terrific intimidating lead, you'll want at least doubles of #2 and #3 cams (which I was well short of), but is let down by some suspect sandy rock at the initial traverse and has a dirty loose top-out. We accidentally sent a couple of sizeable missiles down toward the base of Predator. Awesome yes, but a little dangerous to others. The hand line back to DHMK is a 10m pitch in itself (stay on belay) with dirt underfoot at start and finish, which further detracts (and it's shared with Guardians of the Galaxy). The top pitch of DHMK is much easier, well protected, airy and very fun for 5m at the top while sneaking out the roof.

16 Dont Hurt my Kowhai P2 - with Gareth

Bloody great value for 16. Only took nuts, a few cams wouldn't hurt. Excellent finish and a great way to avoid a shambles on GOTG.

Pitch 2 feels outrageous, steep and exposed with good gear and mentally a lot harder than Caveman P3. Worth the effort.

18 19 Sex Panther - with Grant Johnston, Angela Hewlett Mixed trad 40m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Classic Sat 30th Jan 2016
One long pitch. Took a while at the bolted crux bit, but got a good rest at the first belay. Trad second pitch is better, well protected, great finger crack approach to the final moves. A bit of Honnolding on the top ledge belay, then around the corner (bolt safety followed by ledge, unprotected step onto a scary wobbly plate, then solo up) for a celebratory peanut slab on top of the Bluff just before sunset. Back to camp at last light, fantastic. Can rap off on a 60m to the higher start ledge.

17 16 Nogasang Mixed trad 30m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Good Sun 27th Jan 2019
It's more like 17, and there is a fair bit of lichen regrowth, but it's a cool slabby lead with some nervy moments.

Mixed trad 40m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Classic Wed 20th Feb 2019
Great fun and a spectacular position to finish. A bit of lichen after the first belay makes things feel a bit precarious, but the rest of the pitch is clean. Getting dark, forgot to clean it on rap, sorry.

18 19 Sex Panther - with Gareth, Greg, Amy, Arlo Mixed trad 40m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Classic Sun 17th Apr 2022
Group Sex Panther. Started up late in the day, led as one pitch with some nervy moments avoiding the loose block at midway. Settled in at sunset for a lengthy belay session bringing up three seconds, watched the moon rise, then we all had a headlamp strobe disco on the ledge. Back to camp around 8.30pm. Thanks to Matt for the extra rope.

17 Potions Master - with Jonno Rau Mixed trad 35m, 6 Tukino Very Good Sun 17th Dec 2023
Nice lead from Jonno. Great route, reminiscent of Arapiles watchtower slabbing. Left the anchor in place for convenience.

Dangle and thrash on top rope. Shut down at the side step to Bad Behaviour. Grrr.

Usual story on top rope. Bah.

20 Dani - with shichang Mixed trad 20m, 4 Waipapa Good Mon 14th Sep 2015
Started up Short n Sweet and wished I hadn't, the trad first half of Dani is much cleaner and will attempt that next time. Fine balancy moves through the bolts. Fell off at the last moves off the final bolt to the top holds, but that is probably not the crux once you figure it out. Will revisit.

24 Chasing After Charlie Direct Mixed trad 14m, 4 Mt. Eden Quarry Very Good Sun 28th Aug 2016
After watching Blair and Jason work out the moves. A fair bit of dangling but not much thrashing. Somewhat surprised.

19 Bitten By A Cobra - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 25m, 4 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 25th Oct 2020
Quite good. Wants to throw you off balance up the crack, at some point you have to give in and swing onto the face. Not as jammy as it looks. Slung the small tree above the crack, kept going on gear to the highest anchor (beware of ledge fall).

19 Bitten By A Cobra - with Angela Hewlett, Colin Mixed trad 25m, 4 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Fri 22nd Jan 2021
Nearly spat me off at the crux. Had put a cam in the best fingerlock above the horizontal, things got very rattly.

19 Bitten By A Cobra - with Gareth Mixed trad 25m, 4 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Mon 23rd Oct 2023
A bit of dirt in the crack dogleg. Put a nut in the jam there, had to remove it and place a lower cam. Skipped all the top bolts, finished to Korimako anchor.

17 Hard Pet Shop Shark Attack 1981 - with Gareth Mixed trad 30m, 3 Kawakawa Bay Good Tue 2nd Jan 2024
Rather good. Headed right after first bolt, some sketch getting back on line. Nose bolts a bit tempting. Surprisingly clean for a mixed route.

18 Hard The Sufferer and the Witness - with Aidan Sarginson, Gareth Mixed trad 37m, 3 Kawakawa Bay Average Tue 6th Feb 2024
Aidan's idea, quite pleased I wasn't leading it, dirty as and very very chossy to the left. Some was sent down to terrify the belayer, much remains up there. Got harness gear well stuck in a small manuka and came off, removed it. Crux is cleanish, very balancy and possibly harder than 18. P2 anchor is a pair of surprise carrots. One strand of access hand line is getting a bit core shot. Memorable in the wrong way. Distracted ourselves with more track fairy work down below.

17 Finger of Fate (Finger of Fate P1) - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 20m, 2 Waipapa Average Sat 28th Jul 2012
No time to do the second pitch. Got to use the #5 cam!

25 Thunderpussy Mixed trad 14m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Wed 15th Oct 2014
Dangle and thrash. Got up eventually, gardening on the way. Needs a serious scrub at top. One to work on.

18 Green Machine Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Good 2010
A very balancy crux and not much gear apart from 2 rusty old pitons and a smallish nut. I like it.

23 Diddely Dick Mixed trad 14m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Average Sun 10th Jul 2016
A bit of a thrash around working it out. A couple of the best holds below the first bolt are really rather loose and may make a lead a scary proposition. Top sequence is quite ok.

18 Green Machine Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Good Sat 21st Jan 2017
Tricky crux. Total sandbag, more like 21? Pegs seem still ok ish, somebody led it after.

18 Green Machine Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Good Sat 4th Feb 2017
Once you work out the crux it's not such a sandbag. Turns out there are 2 decent nuts left of the top piton, one good nut below and a possibly adequate ballnut above the first, sooo...

18 Green Machine Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Good Sat 4th Feb 2017
Led on preplaced nuts and ball nut, skipping pitons. Back for a greenpoint next time ha.

23 Snatchbender Direct Mixed trad 14m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Wed 8th Feb 2017
How have we missed this? It's great. Close to nailing it first attempt but bollocksed up the move across to the top block. Fun.

18 Green Machine - with Paul Whitfield, Grant Johnston Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Very Good Wed 22nd Mar 2017
A greenpoint of sorts, eliminating the old pitons. Good #3 rock below first piton, #2 ball nut above it, crux moves, then very good #1 rock and optional small brass offset left of second piton. You could skip the ball nut and still be OK I think.

18 Green Machine Mixed trad 9m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Very Good Sat 1st Apr 2017
Gear only, without pre-attached draws, which makes the top piece rather more strenuous to place then clip. Bloody great.

23 Snatchbender Direct - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 14m, 2 Mt. Eden Quarry Sat 10th Jun 2017
Yup its good. Less complex than bad behaviour, nice balancy moves up to the groove then good bridging until you can step across above the wee undercling roof.

17 Atomic Rooster - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 10m, 2 Maungarei Springs Good Tue 3rd Jul 2018
Better overall than Frenz, and the bottom moves are harder especially if you stop to get a high piece in before committing.

2 16 8m lead by Gareth Hall
Mixed trad 20m, 2 Waipapa Average Sat 30th Mar 2019
First pitch is OK, though expect to build a trad anchor. Followed Gareth's P2 caver lead, a pretty hideous and strenous wide thrutch fest. Maybe it's better to go out and layback the left edge of the column?

19 Quarry Climbing Mixed trad 12m, 2 Waipapa Good Sat 16th Nov 2019
A play on top rope, didn't have the head or energy to get on lead. Gear looks decent enough, took a bit of time to work out the crux move at 2nd bolt. Quarry moves indeed! Will be back for this.

18 Zig Mixed trad 14m, 2 Maungarei Springs Good Wed 11th Mar 2020
Not bad. Didn't use the bolts. There is a shallow but OK nest of 3 micro nuts and a #0.2 cam left of the crux bolt, a good stance to place those before you tiptoe around the nose, then a good #1 nut after the crux before you head up 2m of easy climbing to the anchor. No runout. I call 17, in no way is this 18/19.

19 Quarry Climbing - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 12m, 2 Waipapa Good Sun 31st May 2020
Another TR burn, a short sit to remember the crux. On the lead list.

19 Quarry Climbing Mixed trad 12m, 2 Waipapa Good Sat 10th Oct 2020
First lead attempt. Aborted the crux moves (and my hips), then sorted the angles out but fell off onto a #3 ball nut above. Finally climbed thru to easier ground. Ball nut took some removing. Needs a scrub before next go, moss and pine needles made life more difficult.

19 Quarry Climbing - with Gareth, Jake Mixed trad 12m, 2 Waipapa Very Good Sun 20th Mar 2022
Off the dog list. Tetchy start sanitised by a ball nut. Big palm off compression move at the crux for me, another ball nut then smoother sailing. A bit green here and there.

19 Tropic Thunder - with Greg, Gareth Mixed trad 18m, 2 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Fri 15th Apr 2022
Quite a bit trickier than it looks, and really good. Some difficult off-balance jamming through the corner, then eases up top. A full double rack is overkill unless you want to stitch it up, but doubles of 0.4 thru 1 may be handy. The 2 bolts are just an annoyance.

18 Just For One Day - with Jonno Rau Mixed trad 35m, 2 Tukino Very Good Sun 17th Dec 2023
Terrific climbing, not too run out and there's no doubt gear I missed. Nervy moment after first bolt when I pulled a sizeable sharp flake off while starting the crux. Pockets full of wind-blown sand so missed those for cams, will remember a brush next time. Big overhanging chockstones at top a bit alarming. Must do again!

23 Bad Behaviour Mixed trad 14m, 1 Mt. Eden Quarry Very Good Wed 3rd Dec 2014
Been quite a while since I was on this. Semi-spanked.

18 No Country For Young Men Mixed trad 33m, 1 Waipapa Very Good Sun 18th Jan 2015
Haha, brilliant. If you like your trad to be just gear-protected sport routes, don't get on this. Had one brief wimp-out sit on gear at the crux commit, I really need to trust my jamming skills more. Would definitely do again.

18 No Country For Young Men - with Stephen Bailey Mixed trad 33m, 1 Waipapa Very Good Sat 11th Jun 2016
Galaxy wall too damp, got on this which looked dry. Jam crack made tougher & more painful by moss out right so both feet in the crack. Got up above the tree to discover a wall of slime, very very tricky finding workable feet. Clean & dry again above second tree. Phew. Used a lot of hexes. Stephen took a long stretchy fall seconding the bottom.

For Steve's enjoyment. Traversing low at the start is no easier than traversing high. Lots of fun lichen. Pulled a large chunk of scoria off in the final traverse, keep the hands low. Stonking rope drag while belaying from the top. Probably the most adventure you can have at the quarry for the price of an 18 (cough cough).

17 Heroes - with Jonno Rau Mixed trad 35m, 1 Tukino Good Sun 17th Dec 2023

17 Hard Iboga - with Aidan Sarginson, Gareth Mixed trad 30m, 1 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Mon 5th Feb 2024
Had led before as a DHMK linkup. Bloody great jamming and bridging. Only let down by a sandy unprotected traverse in and loose topout. Started up GOTG to avoid the grot, long sling on the DHMK anchor and the bolt before it. We sent a few missiles down. Fixed up the core shot GOTG hand line then rapped down that.

Sandbag? Crucial cracks at the overhang all slimy and unusable. Pumped, thought I was gonna die but the green totem basic held me on 2 undercammed lobes in a mossy flare, very surprised. None of us could find a way through the overhang, ShiChang eventually snuck around left to Trenchtown then runout and off route straight up and built anchor. I finished up past a thank god hand jam and cam then very runout to top. Type 2.5 fun, not keen to repeat.

17 For King and Country - with Grant Johnston Trad 30m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Wed 24th Apr 2019
The bottom retrobolt is not too bad apart from the first bolt. Took the cave access chains off, a fall from the first crux would be through those and they are excessive anyway. The crack and corner above is great with a couple of cruxes, but VERY dirty right now, was more or less a ground-up again, will be back to clean it after winter. A must-do when clean.

16 The Gecko Groove - with Colin Megson Trad 28m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 1st Apr 2012
Didn't have any big gear for the top and had to improvise with funky cammed small hexes and tricams in fissures in the crack. "Tree" belay is optimistic, it's a small wobbly bush - back it up with gear in the top of the crack or traverse to better anchors.
