Grade Route Gear style Crag Quality Date
14 Thunder God (ThunderGod P2) - with shichang, Angela Hewlett
2 14 lead by John Pitcairn
Trad 52m Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 7th Feb 2015
Abseiled into pitch 2 from the Jugzilla anchors. It's OK, though the crack is likely to be quite dirty. Would be a good beginner lead.

21 Hugs Not Drugs Sport 20m Kawakawa Bay Good Fri 2nd Nov 2018
First 22 onsight, maybe it's a little soft? Fun climbing, just enough features to keep it all together.

20 Hotter than a Hot Thing (Hotter Then a Hot Thing) - with Magnus Hammarsal Sport 30m, 13 Sheridan Hills Good Sat 20th Feb 2010
Somebody had to finish it. Only just, but. Didn't see the attempts from Magnus or Colin, but draws already on up to the ledge.

20 Fire and Ice Sport 15m, 9 Sheridan Hills Good Sat 12th Sep 2015
Second ascent I think. Enjoyable, more sustained than Pigs In Space. Crux may be easier if you are taller than Bryce. Colin succeeded on top rope.

20 Richard Sport 20m, 5 Ti Point Good 2011
20 Sundowning Syndrome - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 5 Kawakawa Bay Good Fri 2nd Nov 2018
Enjoyable, but bolting seems a tad runout. Not sure how it is supposed to finish, left to top bolt of Jug Addiction, or right into top of Hugs not Drugs? Straight up over the bulge would be harder than 20 for sure.

20 The Skink Prince (of Bel Air) Sport 15m, 8 Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 4th Jan 2020
Pleased to get this, spent a lot of time balanced on my toes working out the moves on the top slab. Similar in feel and difficulty to the top crux of Great Scott.

20 Korimako - with Grant Johnston Sport 25m, 11 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 25th Oct 2020
Claiming onsight for the slab (previously onsighted the top on gear out of Lolly Scramble), with no use of the LH crack. Balancy, mono stack fingers and tiny feet. I rather like it.

20 Animal Farm - with Gareth, Wade Sport 20m, 9 Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 12th Dec 2020
Some sharpish holds, need to keep moving.

20 Oh My God Sport 12m, 4 Wharepapa Rock Good Sun 21st Mar 2021
Never been on this. First bolt felt high, then just keep it going on smalL but not tiny stuff. A little overhung, good body position will help.

20 Ka-ching - with Gareth Sport 28m, 16 Wharepapa Rock Good Sun 13th Mar 2022
This is pretty cool, a long rising traverse with some thinking moments. Still a bit grubby and gritty, and some fragile holds. Didn't need quite that many bolts. When the dust settles it'll probably be 19 and 2 stars.

19 Safe Playing - with Fia Forsell Sport 20m, 8 Waipari Good Wed 20th Apr 2011
Face a bit strenuous on sharp pockets, arete is nice

19 Climatic Extension Sport 25m, 11 Waipari Very Good Sun 10th Oct 2010
19 Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter - with Grant Johnston Sport 25m, 8 Waipari Very Good Sat 9th Oct 2010
Pretty hard for an 18...

19 The Hecklers - with shichang Trad 45m Kawakawa Bay Classic Sun 8th Feb 2015
Absolutely outstanding, a must-do. Had been saving the onsight attempt for a couple of visits now, stoked to get it. Not as hard as I expected, there are a number of no-hands rests and face holds apart from the crack. Taping up is a good idea to take full advantage of the many great fist and hand jams. Eats hexes!

Ran into Gerard Tarr on the way down, who had been up completing new pitches above, Hecklers multipitch, woo!

17 Jugzilla (Jugzilla P1) - with shichang, Angela Hewlett
1 17 lead by John Pitcairn
Sport 42m, 13 Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 7th Feb 2015
A pleasant jug haul, join the queue. Just did the first pitch then abseiled into the second pitch of ThunderGod.

18 19 Sex Panther - with Grant Johnston, Angela Hewlett Mixed trad 40m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Classic Sat 30th Jan 2016
One long pitch. Took a while at the bolted crux bit, but got a good rest at the first belay. Trad second pitch is better, well protected, great finger crack approach to the final moves. A bit of Honnolding on the top ledge belay, then around the corner (bolt safety followed by ledge, unprotected step onto a scary wobbly plate, then solo up) for a celebratory peanut slab on top of the Bluff just before sunset. Back to camp at last light, fantastic. Can rap off on a 60m to the higher start ledge.

19 Captain Caveman - with Angela Hewlett Sport 60m, 24 Kawakawa Bay Classic Mon 1st Feb 2016
Great finish for the trip. Would say mega-classic if not so heavily retrobolted. 1st pitch a bit average but cave and top pitch are terrific. Led under time pressure mostly on gear with trad anchor below the chimney, used 2 bolts on P1 (still damp down low), 1st 2 on P2 (maybe some pro available), one before 1st overlap on P3 (probably pro but keen to move on). Top pitch more like fun 17-18 most of the way, engage your brain at the top overhang, sling the obvious thread then find the jugs. Wow.

19 Peanut Butter Jam - with Angela Hewlett Trad 10m Maungarei Springs Good Sun 15th May 2016
Good gear all the way, a hex in the top crack works nicely, good hand and fist jam through the crux. Some loose flaky stuff out right.

19 Wild Country Express Sport 16m, 5 Wharepapa Rock Good Sat 30th Jun 2018
Not bad. Pretty sure I've never been on it.

19 Dessicator Sport 10m, 4 Pakeho Good Wed 31st Oct 2018
The tree has grown a bit, will take secateurs next time. Good balancy stuff.

19 Dirty Dancing - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 3rd Nov 2018
Fun monkey dancing on good pockets out to the arete, crux getting onto the slab above.

19 Bitten By A Cobra - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 25m, 4 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 25th Oct 2020
Quite good. Wants to throw you off balance up the crack, at some point you have to give in and swing onto the face. Not as jammy as it looks. Slung the small tree above the crack, kept going on gear to the highest anchor (beware of ledge fall).

19 Hammerheads Bite Sport 15m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Average Wed 30th Dec 2020
May have used a feature or two from Fuggin’ Jet Skis, but if those aren't in it's a bit bloody contrived. Frankly these are squeeze routes anyway, just one would have been better, and this also arguably retrobolts the trad line. Meh.

19 Time Flies - with Gareth, Anja Sport 20m, 5 Waipari Good Sun 5th Dec 2021
Reasonably grunty crux, nice airy arete. Thought possibly hard 18 but seems everyone disagrees with me on that, maybe just having a good day.

19 Exponential Decay - with Jonno Sport 13m, 4 Wharepapa Rock Good Sat 15th Jan 2022
Or this. Fun past 1st bolt in overhang, then keeps you working for a bit.

19 Gnomalised - with Greg Sport 9m, 3 Waipari Average Sat 2nd Apr 2022
Bottom felt a bit dicky, but as usual it's the small pockets that are good. Eases toward the top. Too short to be worth a star.

19 Tropic Thunder - with Greg, Gareth Mixed trad 18m, 2 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Fri 15th Apr 2022
Quite a bit trickier than it looks, and really good. Some difficult off-balance jamming through the corner, then eases up top. A full double rack is overkill unless you want to stitch it up, but doubles of 0.4 thru 1 may be handy. The 2 bolts are just an annoyance.

19 Survival of the Fittest - with Greg, Gareth Sport 40m, 14 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sat 16th Apr 2022
Bloody good, highly recommended. Much cleaner than I was expecting too. An easy warmup cruise up most of Raw Umber lulls you into a false sense of security, then get your runout trousers on for the tricky arete crack (or take a couple of finger size cams). Then it's time for the main game, up the black-streaked corner. You can step across left to a good rest, but getting back right will be tricky if that's where you want to go. Spent a good long while figuring out how to keep moving up on the left and didn't want to leave the rest, but it's all there at the grade. Easier to the top, then best rap down is to the Raw Umber anchor.

19 Crown Of Thistles Sport 20m, 5 Wharepapa Rock Good Sat 7th May 2022
Neat off balance traverse in the middle, and it's not all over after that. Would benefit from a scrub.

19 Small Pocks - with Gareth Sport 9m Whanganui Bay Good Sat 2nd Jul 2022
On the soft side of 19, unless the left arete isn't in.

19 Streetwise - with Jonno Rau Sport 15m, 6 Waipari Good Sun 5th Mar 2023
The least sustained of the three 19s. Short crux above the detached block.

18 Millennium Madness (Millenium Madness) Trad 15m Waipapa Very Good Sat 28th Jul 2012
Watch the rope drag

18 Terror Incognito Sport 25m, 10 Waipari Very Good Sun 10th Oct 2010
Save your strength for the overhanging top section. Bloody good.

18 Cowabunga Sport 12m, 4 Waipari Average Sun 10th Oct 2010
18 Eyeline Sport 15m, 4 Waipari Average Sun 10th Oct 2010
18 Hannah Louise Sport 30m, 8 Sheridan Hills Very Good Sat 12th Jan 2013
Pretty easy until the end. Mind the gorse!

18 Serial Pillar Sport 20m, 5 Whakapapa Gorge Good Sat 4th Dec 2010
18 The Root - with A cast of thousands Trad 25m Waipapa Good Sat 29th Nov 2014
A good adventure. Some fun 3D moves, some root climbing (and slinging), some loose blocks, and a balancy bulging finish straight up left next to the wall with small pro will get your heart pumping. Deserves a star.

18 Critters Corner - with shichang Trad 25m Kawakawa Bay Good Fri 6th Feb 2015
Scary. Attempted as described in the guide, with no protection for the balancy moves up the slab until established in the corner 10m or so up. That was a bit tense, would probably clip the first 2 bolts on Great Scott next time. Thereafter through the corner the gear is smallish, stances quite spaced and not all of it is ideal. Got quite run out bridging and laybacking.

18 The Angry Sea and the Sky Sport 20m, 5 Ti Point 2011
18 The Fang Sport 20m, 5 Ti Point Good 2011
Good but not as good as it looks. Richard is better.

18 Glory Hole - with Grant Johnston Sport 10m, 3 Maungarei Springs Average Sun 15th May 2016
18 Shooting in The Dark - with Grant Johnston Sport 10m, 5 Maungarei Springs Average Sat 23rd Sep 2017
Overgraded, more like 17. One nice move on the arete.

18 Roadweary Sport 20m, 9 Waipari Good Sat 2nd Jun 2018
Pretty sure I have never been on this. Sharpish holds, some high steps, not a soft touch. Possibly drifted a bit too far towards arete near the top.

18 Out With The Boys Sport 15m, 4 Wharepapa Rock Average Sat 30th Jun 2018
No easier than the 19 next to it. Both are soft.

18 Midday Lightning - with Grant Johnston Trad 12m Maungarei Springs Very Good Tue 3rd Jul 2018
Good fun, jammy start, exciting wee traverse, nice moves above. Ball nuts were handy. Not sure its 19 though.

18 Tiger by the Tail Sport 11m, 6 Pakeho Very Good Wed 31st Oct 2018
Really a lot of fun. The steep groove is considerably easier than it looks, and the roof finish is great juggy fun, onsighted that. Think about the hand/clip sequence, then work your feet. Phil did Tiger it seems.

18 Road Tripping - with Angela Hewlett Sport 48m, 14 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 4th Nov 2018
Nice long slabby route, good moves, great exposure on the arete. Recommended.

18 Benny’s Magical Koura Circus - with Grant Johnston Trad 18m Kawakawa Bay Good Wed 24th Apr 2019
Short but good, good pro, and clean enough. Balancy mid section makes gear placement a bit delicate, got a tad run out. A fun fight.

18 Human Intervention - with Grant Johnston Sport 28m, 9 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sat 23rd Nov 2019
Really nice route with a thoughtful crux around 2/3 height, easier up until then.

18 Rabid Woke Mob (Wish your sister was this dirty) - with Grant Johnston Trad 19m Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 23rd Nov 2019
The crack tends to collect dirt and leaf litter but currently still OK. The crux straight off the deck is fun, decent gear most of the way, top dihedral a little tricky, top out a bit dirty. Got off just as the sun started to hit around 1pm, well planned solar management.

18 Biggie Smalls - with Tim Swain, Grant Johnston, Anna Trad 15m Kawakawa Bay Good Sat 23rd Nov 2019
Bomber hand & fist jams and good gear in the first half then the top tricky dihedral is the crux. I'd forgotten small cams but managed to get a couple of small nuts in. Horrified to find I'd somehow clipped through my dangling safety, watched the nuts rotate as I contorted past them nervously. This is pretty good!

18 Gorse of the Gods - with Angela Hewlett Sport 9m, 4 Maungarei Springs Good Wed 11th Mar 2020
Bouldery start, the low bolt is not at all silly. The weetbix out right is sufficiently disturbing. Softish 18.

18 Zig Mixed trad 14m, 2 Maungarei Springs Good Wed 11th Mar 2020
Not bad. Didn't use the bolts. There is a shallow but OK nest of 3 micro nuts and a #0.2 cam left of the crux bolt, a good stance to place those before you tiptoe around the nose, then a good #1 nut after the crux before you head up 2m of easy climbing to the anchor. No runout. I call 17, in no way is this 18/19.

18 Groove Thang - with Jonno Sport 12m, 3 Wharepapa Rock Good Sat 15th Jan 2022
Can't remember ever being on this. Don't come off getting to first bolt.

18 Winterlude - with Angela Hewlett, Colin Sport 23m, 10 Wharepapa Rock Very Good Sat 5th Mar 2022
An absolute treat. Keeps you thinking right to the end. Definitely not 19.

18 Rock Back Billy - with Gareth Sport 12m, 4 Wharepapa Rock Good Sun 6th Mar 2022
A couple of degrees cooler, some fun monkeying around down low. You could make it quite tricky by misreading it.

18 Baloo - with Greg Sport 18m, 9 Kawakawa Bay Average Fri 15th Apr 2022
Pretty straightforward and not worth a star in my opinion.

18 Moss Corner - with Gareth Trad 14m Whanganui Bay Very Good Sat 2nd Jul 2022
Bloody good, and pretty clean given it hadn't been climbed for years. Managed to park a big nut where my finger lock should go, did some fat ring lock to work around that. Could have done with another 0.5. Solid 18 and rattly fingers for the lower half, then eases a smidge and widens to hands above. Mantle up then top out through the gorse, bolted anchor is behind. Take 3x #0.5 and 2x #2.

18 Just For One Day - with Jonno Rau Mixed trad 35m, 2 Tukino Very Good Sun 17th Dec 2023
Terrific climbing, not too run out and there's no doubt gear I missed. Nervy moment after first bolt when I pulled a sizeable sharp flake off while starting the crux. Pockets full of wind-blown sand so missed those for cams, will remember a brush next time. Big overhanging chockstones at top a bit alarming. Must do again!

17 For King and Country - with Magnus Hammarsal Trad 30m Kawakawa Bay Good Sun 26th Jan 2014
Place gear in layback? Sure ;-)

17 Boat Ramp Crack - with Grant Johnston Trad 45m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 14th Mar 2010
Crux is the overhangs down low. Really good gear. Don't miss the halfway anchors on the way down!

17 Finger of Fate (Finger of Fate P1) - with Grant Johnston Mixed trad 20m, 2 Waipapa Average Sat 28th Jul 2012
No time to do the second pitch. Got to use the #5 cam!

17 Hebe - with Grant Johnston Sport 30m, 15 Sheridan Hills Good Sat 20th Feb 2010
Agree it's over bolted

17 Carpe Diem - with Grant Johnston Sport 30m, 12 Sheridan Hills Very Good Sat 20th Feb 2010
17 Blind as Bats Sport 10m Bayley Road Average Sat 12th Jan 2013
Slipping small wires onto naked bolts...

17 Blazing Away Sport 12m, 4 Waipari Good Sun 18th Sep 2011
Heel hooks! Otherwise it will be a lot harder.

17 Firestarter Sport 18m, 6 Waipari Average Sun 21st Feb 2010
17 Moon Base Alpha - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 6 Waipari Average Sat 9th Oct 2010
17 Lay Back and Enjoy It (Untitled) - with shichang Sport 12m, 6 Waipapa Good Sun 13th Jan 2013
If you can't layback, don't get on this.

17 Burning Deck - with Grant Johnston, shichang Trad 25m Ti Point Good Fri 21st Nov 2014
This is easier than Chad ... a fun funky move getting out from under the roof, then you can jam and make use of holds on the right arete. If you decide to continue straight up from the crack to the Fang pinnacle as I did, beware of the black backed gull nest on top. After a couple of minutes of being dive bombed and shat on by a large angry bird, going left to the Chad anchor is a welcome escape.

17 Billy Bold - with Colin Megson Trad 12m Waipapa Good Sat 29th Nov 2014
Short but fun. Take some big gear, or you'll be running it out up the top crack (duh).

17 Snarf - with Angela Hewlett Sport 10m, 3 Waipari Good Sun 30th Nov 2014
Fun start

17 Short n Sweet - with shichang Trad 10m Waipapa Don't Bother Mon 14th Sep 2015
Mossy and dirty at the bottom and will probably stay that way due to the angle and trees above. Had to dig out handholds and placements, first cam and tiny nut very very sketchy. You may find it preferable to nip right to Dani for better gear. Continued up the top bolts of Dani, more enjoyable.

17 The Angel of Calcutta Sport 20m, 6 Ti Point 2011
17 Sunset Boulevard - with Grant Johnston, Angela Hewlett Trad 18m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sat 30th Jan 2016
Get on the damn sharp end. Really good. Fun start with a bit of thought, good jamming, another crux about halfway. Top is easier and there is adequate gear if you have small cams.

17 Taniwha Crackdown - with Grant Johnston, Angela Hewlett Trad 20m Kawakawa Bay Good Sun 31st Jan 2016
Fun and not as straightfoward as thought. One small cam and lots of nuts, gear needed plenty of extension to manage rope drag, belayed at Elephant Hunting chains (shade) but could have continued. Angela led the short 13 to the top then we soloed (me in liner socks only).

17 Pimple - with Angela Hewlett Sport 15m Kawakawa Bay Average Sun 31st Jan 2016
Grant took the dinghy out, we went looking for Peach Teats for Angela, who started up this until it quickly became obviously more difficult than 13. Also still fairly dirty. A bit crimpy here and there, not a lot to recommend it. Feeling pretty tired after yesterday.

17 Little Miss Naughty - with Angela Hewlett Trad 12m Kawakawa Bay Good Sun 31st Jan 2016
Quite interesting placements, OK climbing.

17 Wobble - with Angela Hewlett Trad 35m Ti Point Good Sat 20th Feb 2016
Better than it looks and quite fun. The offwidth weirdness is nicely balanced by the moves up the corner. Park your belayer under the bottom overhang, plenty of loose rock if you are unwary. Wrapped the rope around the big top block to belay.

17 Pani Para Chha Sport 15m, 9 Sheridan Hills Good Thu 8th Feb 2018
Thought I must have climbed this before but it would seem not. Really quite nice and better than Dead Cow or Pigs. Deserves a star if those get one.

17 The Frenz Experiment - with Grant Johnston Trad 10m Maungarei Springs Good Tue 3rd Jul 2018
Bottom is good but top is not, seems a tad loose up there. 18 is very generous, thought 16 perhaps?

17 Green Spot - with Grant Johnston Sport 16m, 5 Wharepapa Rock Average Thu 12th Jul 2018
Yup, pumpy face climbing. Or we're just old and tired.

17 Secret Squirrel - with Angela Hewlett Sport 20m, 6 Kawakawa Bay Very Good Fri 2nd Nov 2018
Flows very well. Not sure about the L/R variants, we started left then drifted right to the arete after first bolt, that still seemed 17 ish.

17 Elephant's Revenge Trad 15m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sun 27th Jan 2019
Really enjoyed this, worth going up there for. The offwidth start is the crux, funky moves and can be tamed a bit by a high fist jam to pull up at the top. Plenty of gear is available up the top section offwidth layback and above. It's all pretty clean too. Big gear - take at least doubles of #4 cams, at least one #5.

17 Hunny on my Paws Sport 22m, 6 Pakeho Very Good Sun 24th Mar 2019
Mostly stayed off the slab and pootled around on the overlap which is fun, then took the left hand finish up the small groove. The top section is really good and may require a little bit of thinking in more than one spot. Claiming onsight for the alternate bottom approach and onsighted top. Not exactly a warmup.

17 Trog Sport 25m, 10 Pakeho Average Sun 24th Mar 2019
Grunty heave-ho at the start, then a bit dull. May have wandered too far right at the top, found getting back to the anchor tricky.

17 Fugly Sport 8m, 3 Frog Pond Average Thu 18th Apr 2019
Guide claims 16 which is definitely a sandbag, it's hardly easier than Kereru. Another tricky start, small sharp holds, tempting arete above.

17 Ruminator Sport 10m, 5 Frog Pond Good Fri 14th Jun 2019
Goey start, optional fist jam above, delicate finish. What's not to like?

17 Sweet Araceli - with Jonno, Greer Sport 15m, 6 Frog Pond Very Good Sun 4th Oct 2020
Easier than it looks. Had a peek around the corner at the trad line ... hmmm. Watch out for the nasty ongaonga nettle bush left of the start.

17 The Mad Hatter - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 10 Kawakawa Bay Good Sun 25th Oct 2020
Damp after rain and high humidity made it feel more like 18. Fun route with undercling traverse.

17 Lycra Rainbow (Sanitize Review) - with Jonno, Greer Sport 10m, 3 Wharepapa Rock Average Sat 21st Nov 2020
Probably a bit off route left at bottom.

17 Cosmic Shiva - with Jonno, Greer Sport 10m, 3 Wharepapa Rock Good Sat 21st Nov 2020
Also a bit off route left above bolt 1. Tired and not thinking well.

17 Manbearpig - with Gareth Trad 15m Kawakawa Bay Very Good Sat 28th Nov 2020
A bit old school and good sweary fun. Facing the right way will help. So will being able to hand jam.

17 Huntaway - with Grant Johnston Sport 20m, 7 Pakeho Very Good Sun 16th May 2021
High first bolt then some slightly grubby horizontals through the low overhang, then up into a great slightly overhung bridging fingerlock sequence. Really enjoyed this. Solid 17.

17 Sweet As - with Gareth Sport 14m, 6 Wharepapa Rock Good Sun 20th Feb 2022
This is to the right of Babs, and better.

17 Fence Line - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Wharepapa Rock Very Good Sun 6th Mar 2022
Bloody good! Reminiscent of something at Arapiles for the exposed traverse and free hanging rap, just a tad shorter.

17 The Chickenator - with Gareth Sport 20m, 9 Mangorewa Very Good Sun 22nd May 2022
Arrived late after slow start and wet after slip in the stream. Great fun route, many good rests, more overhung than it looks.

17 Popping Tags - with Gareth Sport 20m, 8 Mangorewa Average Sun 22nd May 2022
