Descripción

Between the Lower Playground & the Fortress is an area awaiting development known informally as the 'Firing line', due to the unfortunate fact that most things which are thrown off the top of the cliffs, comes crashing through this region. If you're not the sort of person to let something like that worry you, then you'll enjoy the climbing here.

Restricciones heredado de Mt Stuart

Visiting climbers are advised that a significant proportion of the cliffs lie in Department of Defence (Army) land. Trespassing on defence land is an offense. The Townsville City Council (TCC) controlled cliffs require a permit for climbing and/or abseiling. Do not park too close to the gate else your car may be moved. During the year, the car club holds races on the mountain road; during this time road access is closed. Mark Gommers is negotiating with the TCC to remove certain onerous restrictions such as a permit and indemnity insurance.

15m left of Tampa Proof.

Ugly but interesting. This tends to describe the crack/gully to the right of 'Mixed Heritage' which is a lot better than it looks. Climb up the 5m slab to the R of 'MH' to the belay ledge. Follow the obvious crack to the roof marvelling that something so ugly can have such good gear. Crank R of the roof onto the back of the big blade, & climb to the tip. Up & L a bit to the last of the gear, then run it out up a small slab to finish.

PA: Rik Wittkopp & Chris Noon, 2002

A dirty offwidth crack, 1.5m L of Tampa Proof. Up the offwidth to a sloping ledge with a tree under a roof. Up the tree and step across to follow the line until the vegetation. Step R to small ledge and another tree and top out to a big ledge.

PA: Brett Fforde & Rik Wittkopp, 2002

15m to the right of 'Mixed Heritage' are 2 cracks 1.5m apart from each other. 'Tampa Proof' is the RH line. Nice climbing with good gear & a sling off a tree takes you to a large belay ledge.

PA: Rik Wittkopp & Paul Davis, 2001

6-8 meters R of 'Tampa Proof' is a body width crack with 2 chock-stones down low & a roof before the top-out. Up past the chock-stones taking care not to deck out while slinging the 2nd block. Continue up & left following gear placements to a rest in the cave under the roof. A few inventive moves & a crucial camalot #4.5 cam (or equivalent) will see you through the crux to the difficult top-out. All natural, & all bomber gear was the highlight of this climb.

PA: Rik Wittkopp, Chris Noon & Daniel Radford, 2002

PAL: Nathan Walmsley, 2002
