Despite being an abandoned limestone quarry, the idyllic setting and some (quasi-)natural rock faces don't make a post-industrial feeling. With over 200 well equipped routes from slabs to tufas there is something for almost everyone, especially in the low and mid-grades. The low altitude, southward aspect and proximity to the highway make it an attractive winter choice.

Acceso

From Firenze (Florence), follow A11(toll) west. Ca. 10 km after Pistoia exit at Monsummano Terme (the rock is visible from the highway) and follow the signs toward the town centre south of the highway (the map in the guidebook "Toscana e Isola d'Elba" is confusing in that respect). Navigate through the town centre and its one way streets in the direction of "Grotta Giusti Natural Resort". Before reaching it, turn NE into "Via della Cava Rossa" and park at its end. Follow the track uphill through the olive yard for 200 m and turn left in the forest. The track will lead you to all sectors.

Resumen

Near the Raticosa pass, on the border between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, the Rocchino cliff (Rocca di Cavrenno) is an 'unusual spur of limestone rock geologically very rare in the Apennines. Divided into three climbable sectors, this tooth of rock, is particularly appreciable on torrid summer days; aided by the wind that often blows here from Tuscany.

The rock, unfortunately, is not always very compact, making the use of a helmet advisable. Recently, some logistical maintenance and route re-equipment has been carried out. Two new, until recently virgin sectors have also been enhanced. More realizations are planned. For practical reasons of refitting, the route lists remain on stand-by at the moment. In any case, at the base of the routes, you will often find outline route directions.

Winter is less advised, but sometimes delightful, due to the altitude (approximately 880 m) and wind. However, in the summer, the location is really lovely! Routes marked on all slopes aid in locating the best exposure.

Acceso

Passo della Raticosa, an Apennine pass, is easily accessible from both the Tuscan and Emilian sides. Keep the SS. 65 "della Futa" route in mind. Descend towards Monterenzio once you reach Raticosa. After about 1 kilometer, you will find signs for Cavrenno on the left (paved road). Park "carefully" on the right side of the road (NOT in the adjacent field!) and follow the clear trail to the saddle between the Rocchino and another rocky cliff.

Historia

Recently, a printed guidebook dedicated to the area called "Raticosa Climbing" was compiled. The small compendium was dedicated to the localities located near the Apennine pass of the same name (Rocca di Cavrenno/Rocchino/Sasso Mantesca). Apparently, it is already sold out but, probably, it will be reprinted in the future with due additions regarding the succeeding novelties. Stay tuned!!!

Come per il Sasso di San Zanobi, il Sasso della Mantesca (o Sasso del Diavolo) è una formazione di rocce ofiolitiche che si ergono come sentinelle dai prati circostanti e che poco sembrano aver a che fare con la geologia del territorio in cui sono dislocate.

Complici i riflessi particolari della roccia ofiolitica e l’apparente totale estraneità all’ambiente che le circonda, queste formazioni hanno da sempre solleticato la curiosità dell’uomo.

In tempi più recenti si ipotizzò anche che fossero frammenti di meteorite caduti per caso in quella zona, e qualcuno è convinto ancora oggi dell’origine extraterrestre di queste due singolari formazioni rocciose.

Acceso

Da Monterenzio su via Idice andando verso passo della Raticosa, girare a sinistra verso località "La Martina". Si prosegue su via Martina e poi superato l'abitato su via Casoni di Romagna. Si consiglia di parcheggiare l'auto su uno spiazzo alla fine della strada (44.21041574371837, 11.388436061105862) e prendere a piedi la strada non asfaltata sulla sinistra.

Si consigliano scarpe da trekking se nei giorni precedenti ha piovuto, in quanto la strada potrebbe essere molto fangosa e con pozzanghere.

Le vie con la spittatura nuova (Fix Inox) possono essere provate dal basso e sono state riattrezzate le soste in parete, alcune solo in top rope dalla catena e poi passando un rinvio nella protezioni piu vecchie (chiodi a pressione o vecchi spit).

Sul terrazzo sopra la falesia si trovano altre 3 soste che possono essere usate o per calarsi dall'alto ed effettuare manovre.

La roccai è un balzo di cava di arenaia: presenta prese scavate e croste superficiali e anche qualche buchetto o fessurina dovuta all'escavazione.

Il posto è molto bello e tranquillo e il panorama sulle colline della valle del mensola vale la passeggiata nel bosco di cipressi che circonda la falesia.

Go to Marciana Alta, keep going through the village towards the ethnological museum until you see the signposted footway to the right leading to "Madonne del Monte". Walk up the footway (30 min), pass the grounds of the monastery and keep going for another 5 min towards the obvious rocks.

Driving from Carrara towards Tenerano (on supposedly closed road), park the car by the road sign "Tenerano". Walk 50 meters further and take the paved path to the right. Follow the path keeping to the right (lower path) twice and following signs for Tecchia and Gabellaccia. Down steeply to stream, cross stream follow less steeply to another often-dry creek. Cross that and up steeply to cliff.

Pareti piu o meno verticali, con qualche strapiombo anche. Il settore basso e quello alto sono abbastanza differenti per conformazione geologica. Roccia calcarea - con formazioni di grotta speleotemi nel settore basso. Godibile soprattutto nel periodo invernale grazie all'esposizione sud-est.

Almost vertical with some overhangs too. Nice also during winter time. SETTORE ALTO is about 50 mt above the BASSO one, there a path on the left that takes you there easily. Very different rock between ALTO and BASSO.

Park at Montilori (Google Maps: 52024 Loro Ciuffenna, Province of Arezzo, Italy) next to Agriturismo Arca Montana. Follow the path next to the picknic area. Turn left at the cairn 200m after the barrier. Follow the path for about 15 minutes. Keep left when the path splits. You will end up at a terrace above the crags.
