설명
Magaliesberg is a mountain range extending west and north from Pretoria to just south of Pilanesberg. Rock climbing in the Magaliesberg is mostly traditional climbing in deep kloofs or ravines in the northern slopes of the mountain. There are also crags on the southern escarpment. Due to the mild climate in the kloofs, the Magaliesberg offers excellent year-round climbing.
접근 문제들
All of the Magaliesberg is owned by private individuals. Access in the mountain is therefore sensitive. The Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) owns property in the Magaliesberg and provides access permits. Access to other crags are provided by their owners. Most of the MCSA property is accessed by crossing over neighbouring properties so it is always important to know and follow the access arrangements when you visit the area.
For more information on routes, access, and permits please see the following websites:
접근
The north crags are reachable via the N4 & R104, see dedicated approach for each.
윤리문제
No fire allowed as per “No Fires in Magaliesberg Policy”. There is currently a moratorium on bolting in Magaliesberg.
1.1.1. Commando Neck
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.731099, 27.823065
요약
Traditional climbing on 2 buttresses, up to 80m.
설명
The climbing area overlooks Hartebeestpoort Dam.
1.1.2. Eureka Dome & Skeerpoort
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.749631, 27.752778
요약
Longest climbs in the Magalies along its south escarpment.
설명
Skeerpoort and Eureka Dome (the name of the extreme western buttress) is a trad climbing area on the escarpment of the Magaliesberg boasting some of the longest climbs in the area including Upthrust (19), which, at 140 meters, is the longest recorded climb in the Magaliesberg. There are many vulture nests on the cliffs especially between Eureka Chimney and Eureka Gully. There are over 40 routes listed for Skeerpoort/ Eureka Dome, ranging between grade 8 and 25. Classic climbs include Aftermath, a 110 meter, 6 pitch, 4 star grade 19 and Long Drop, a 120 meter, 6 pitch, 5 star grade 20. Please note: There's a lack of easy descents from the eastern end of the Skeerpoort faces.
Descent from the Eastern Buttress is via Eureka Gully.
접근 문제들
The area is on private property; liaise with the MCSA regarding access.
Some of the main Skeerpoort cliffs are off limits to avoid any possible disturbance of the vulture colony. Further, climbers are asked to avoid climbing at Eureka Dome from April to October since Black Eagles are known to nest in the area. However, as this is a South facing crag, it gets very cold in winter which means it’s best to climb there in the summer anyway.
접근
One hour from Johannesburg by car. The walk in is generally steep and bushy, taking about 45' to an hour.
숙박 장소
No accommodation or camping, it is a day crag.
윤리문제
No fire allowed as per “No Fires in Magaliesberg Policy”. 9 climbs (including the longest Magaliesberg climb, Upthrust) cannot be climbed at all due to vultures nesting on the cliffs.
1.1.3. Kranskloof
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.750869, 27.708774
요약
'Kranskloof' is one of the closest trad climbing areas to Johannesburg. With one of the shortest and flattest walk-ins. It's an open, sunny kloof with a variety of climbs between grades 11-->22.

접근 문제들
'Kranskloof' is privately owned and access is at the discretion of the land owner. No permits are available for non-members. A cash charge of R40 per member and per guest is charged, to be paid to the MCSA Administrator, who will pay the owner.
접근
1hr from Johannesburg The walk in to Kranskloof is the shortest for a Magaliesberg trad climbing venue with a total distance of 900m over relatively flat terrain, though it takes about 25 minutes because the path is heavily overgrown.

1.1.6. Castle Gorge
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.816982, 27.583523
요약
Castle Gorge is a hidden gem for hikers, featuring beautiful waterfalls, crystal clear pools and weathered rock formations that are great for swimming and photography.
설명
There are also a few good trad climbs for die-hard climbers. Castle Gorge has 23 trad routes between 30-45m long ranging between grades 7 to 23. A few of the routes are star graded and very worthwhile doing. Descents are via gullies.
접근
1 hour from Johannesburg. While the walk in to Castle Gorge is one of the longest, it’s also one of the most beautiful. A fairly steep walk from the car (with plenty of shade to rest under) levels onto a sunny plateau before dropping into the Gorge. The path is excellent which makes the going relatively easy and as such the hike can still be done in a comfortable hour. The final descent into the Gorge is a little tricky and exposed. The area above the waterfall is slippery and dangerous, and accidents have occurred.
숙박 장소
Plenty of beautiful camping spots available next to the stream and pools.

1.1.8. Dome Pools
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.810863, 27.547703
요약
Dome Pools is a hiking venue, involving an easy walk along a stream to some of the biggest and deepest rock pools in the Magaliesberg, making it a fantastic venue for swimming in the summer months.
설명
All routes can easily be top-roped, take a few long slings / 5m of rope and biners to set up anchors. Some can be easily tackled as boulder problems, but it’s less hassle to carry trad gear than a pad
접근 문제들

Drive to the well known Sparkling Waters hotel. After passing the hotel you go onto a dirt road. About 1 km further you will find Ronnie Bartlett's farm on the right. There is a signpost that says "Kranskloof Hiking Trail". You can park here (sign the book and pay R40 parking fee). Walk back towards the hotel and after a short while you will see a signpost on the right next to a small pedestrian gate. Go through this and follow the trail down.
The trail goes through the lower campsite and then crosses a stream just below the campsite. From here the trail goes uphill about parallel to Grootkloof and then descends into the kloof via scrambling Grootkloof Gully.

2 short kloofs both accessible from the same resort.
접근 문제들
Go to Wigwam Hotel. Sign in and tell the guard you are there to climb they will let you park in front of the gate. This is a private resort and the owner has kindly granted permission. The previous hotel / club house has closed down and we weren't ask to pay for the 25R day pass anymore (2018-11-25). Please behave when in the property, horseplay and noise will be really bad for the way the owners view the climbers. Be polite, it all helps to secure long term access.
접근
To get to the kloof walk up from the gate along the tarred road. To Wigwam go past the church on the left, you will find a path shortly following water pipe behind it. It is an easy short walk, nearly flat.
To Narrow kloof go more right toward the prior restaurant. There is a sign marking the start of a "Mountain walk". Follow this sign and follow the track (looks like it has been made by a quad bike or similar) up the hill to where the path splits, creating an island with a tree on it and taking a right into the narrow looking kloof above. There are kerns on the path. To enter Narrow Kloof (climbing side) one must walk over the top of the first section of kloof and enter the second section where the gulley is formed from above.
윤리문제

Please ensure that whatever you carry into the kloof, you carry out. The kloofs are narrow and access is fairly limited, make sure you go to the bathroom before entering. Please DO NOT urinate or deficate in the kloof as the water is currently pure enough to drink, lets keep it that way. If you have to go make sure you exit the kloof before you get down to business. Please bury your deposits to avoid nasty surprises. If you see litter (and there often is in the kloof, due to baboons raiding the hotel bins) make an effort to pick it up on your way out and put it in a dustbin.

Getting into the kloof is a 20 minute walk then a pretty hairy scramble, a fall from which would be lethal. Not at all suitable for young kids or non-climbers.
접근
The kloof has been subdivided into 3 sectors, to allow for future development:
Lower Sector of the kloof is the area of entry. The Lower Sector starts at a pool that blocks off access from lower down. There are amazing slab and gentle walls in this area. The Lower area ranges up to the point where the tall section of the kloof is entered. This point is marked by a large stack held up by a massive tree with roots running down to the ground on the true right. Middle Sector of the kloof ranges from the elevated tree, that has its roots extending to the ground, up to the double ramp with the big tree at the top of the ramps. This sector has both gentle, vertical and inclined climbing potential. Top Sector is the area above the double ramp with the big tree at the top. This area has tall steep to slab walls on both sides of the kloof.

1.2. Chosspile
- Summary:
-
Lat / Long: -25.721491, 27.848433
설명
Chosspile is a sport climbing area above the Hartbeespoort Dam, within an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. It comprises of 4 climbing sectors with grades ranging between 11 and 34. Routes at Chosspile are fully bolted and range in grade from 11 – 34, with a couple of projects which will be among the hardest in SA once opened. The height range of the routes is between 12 to 30 metres, so a 60 metre rope is sufficient. The Harry Potter area has the highest concentration of easier routes while Lord of the Rings and Man Cave are most suitable for experienced strong climbers.
접근 문제들
Due to past safety issues, as of mid 2011 the following access arrangements were negotiated by the MCSA with Mount Amanzi, which has legal control of the land:
Only recognised climbing club members (MCSA, SANCF, or University) who have an up-to-date membership card, with a photo, are allowed to climb at the Chosspile.
Each card holder is allowed to bring two guests as current status of October 2018.
Members and guests first report to Mount Amanzi’s reception (same side of the road, but across the river from the Chosspile) where they sign an indemnity and pay R30 per card-holder and 50R per guest. Update 2019: You will receive as well the (weekly renewed) gate lock combination. The car guards will be directly at the park site instead of at the gate previously.
Although guards are paid R5 per guest, please feel free to supplement their earnings.
Note: Yearly passes are available.
