Beautiful, maze-like area within an broken hilltop.

描述

Scharfenstein is a unique crag, that came into existence when the hilltop exploded around 100 years ago, when it was hit by lightning (according to legends). Nowadays it is a maze-like accumulation of Blocks and boulders in all kinds of heights and shapes. The basalt stone is really grippy, but notoriously loose.

Safety advice for climbers: while the basalt stone hardly brakes or rubbes of, due to its structure some broken holds remain stuck in the wall. This applies especially for easier routes with more pronounces holds.

Safety advice for boulderers: several blocks have a rather bad dropzone due to the steepness of the area or loose rocks (particularly in the areas Wild for the Night and Perlentaucher). Therefore it‘s recommended to bring a stack of crashpads and/or a bunch of adept spotters. Some of the boulders that are suited for solo visits are Rose of Gudensberg (7a+), Vasco da Gama (6c), Verblendung (6b), Public Viewing (6b), Stille Hinterlassenschaft (6a+), Steinerne Kunst (6a) and others.

Leave the A49 and drive through Dissen. Cross a small bridge across the A49 (altough regular traffic is not allowed there) and park somewhere there. You‘ll see the Scharfenstein from afar.

Scharfenstein has seen more and more visitors over the years. As a result, pollution as increased notably. So please, take your trash and maybe even collect some more. Have respect for the locals who maybe aren‘t to happy with us driving around on their farm roads.

The sector „Perlentaucher“ is identical to the center of the old hilltop, where most of the climbing walls are situated. You can access it via the path that passes by the iconic boulder Rose of Gutensberg. For some of the boulders of Perlentaucher you‘ll need to follow some of the smaller paths that later turn to the left.
