Grade | Route | Gear style | Quality | |||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Sun 6th May 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Bardens Lookout Little Triggers Wall | ||||||
22 | ★★ Hunky Dory | 20m | ★ Good | |||
Other than the dangerously high first bolt, I thought this route was probably easier than "Low" next to it. Some great fingerlocks make for solid climbing/clipping. Good fun.
20 21 | ★★ Sound and Vision | 20m | ★ Good | |||
Pretty easy climbing (maybe 18/19) for most of it, then one sequence of 3 moves at about 21. Quite enjoyable for this section of bardens.
21 19 | ★★ Mike and Lorna go to Town | 25m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
Easy for a 19 (as per new guide), even when its so bloody cold you can't feel your fingertips. Not bad climbing though, decent warmup.
Sun 29th Apr 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Big Top | ||||||
19 | ★★ JinX | 25m | ★ Good | |||
Not too shabby. Pretty straightforward except for one crazy desperate sequence of moves.
20 | ★ HoaX | 15m | ★★ Very Good | |||
Quite technical, but not very strenuous. Deserves JinX's stars from the new guidebook, as this is about a million times more awesome.
17 | ★ Once You Bolt Crack You Never Go Back | 12m | ★ Good | |||
If this was on gear, it would be an undergraded 15! Fun, but a bit loose and sandy.
Sat 28th Apr 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Mount Piddington Solomon Area | ||||||
21 | ★★ Skinless Chicken | 27m, 9 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Awesome! Got this second shot after struggling to find the sequence on one move on the onsight (some nice falls). Felt easy on my second attempt. Thin, funky, but never too desperate. The moves just propel you upwards.
Wed 25th Apr 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Medlow Bath The Sunbath | ||||||
22 | ★★ It Goes! | 15m | ★ Good | |||
Repeat. Easy for the grade, but great climbing and not too strenuous. Overbolted through the roof.
19 | ★★ Poultry in Motion | 15m, 6 | ★★ Very Good | |||
One hard move in the middle of a million jugs. Great fun and pumpy!
22 | ★ Wok Hay | 15m | ★ Good | |||
One particularly hard move, and a few which keep you moving. Not as good as Viper, but definately worth a lap. Make sure you clip the carrot in the middle of the crux so you don't hit the ledge if you fall.
21 | ★★ Viper | 15m, 10 | ★ Good | |||
Good fun, the best climb at the Sandpit and definately worth a lap if you're in the area. Quite steep with funky moves and a crazy topout.
20 | ★★ Strange Karma | 15m | ★ Good | |||
Repeat. Done quite a few laps now. Fun warm up, and pleasant climbing.
Sun 22nd Apr 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Katoomba Area Narrow Neck Narrow Neck Crags Pumping Station Track | ||||||
20 | ★★ Wonderland | 15m | ★ Good | |||
Exciting, airy start, with relatively easy climbing on pretty reasonable rock and wicked position after that. Not too hard for the grade,
Sat 14th Apr 2012 - Evans Crown | ||||||
Deckout Buttress | ||||||
21 | ★★★ Dr Marten's Boots | 25m, 6 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Easier than the other 21s around it. Wicked climbing with a 3-dimensional mentality. Nicely bolted... excepted for the stupidly runout and dangerous last 12m to the anchors. A MUST do if you're at Tarana!
19 | ★ Greenies' Delight | 15m, 5 | ★ Good | |||
About as difficult as bloodbath. Not too much leichen, and I enjoyed the climbing. Hard-ish start gets progressively easier as the climb continues.
20 | ★★ Bloodbath | 15m, 4 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Definately soft, but who cares about the grades when the climbing is this much fun. Well protected, cool moves, and makes a pretty good warm up.
Fri 6th Apr 2012 - Beulah | ||||||
Northern areas Donger Boulders Whale Rock | ||||||
16 | ★★ Tui | 15m, 5 | ★ Good | |||
Easier than the routes left of it. About as thin as you can imagine for the grade, but fun and safe.
17 | ★ Invalid Whale | 15m, 4 | ★ Good | |||
Quite a challenging move from first to second bolt. A lot of fun and mind boggling for us bluey's slab climbers.
Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Bell Supercrag The Blowhole | ||||||
22 | ★★ Blow | 10m, 7 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Hard to grade this one... It's like a weird bouldery gym route on bombproof orange rock, with 2 really tough moves, but only about 12m long and with an ALMOST sit-down rest. Me? I thought it was a wicked end to the day, and quite different to the other climbs here.
Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Bell Supercrag Arrivals (Lower) | ||||||
18 19 | ★ Belayer's Root | 14m | ★★ Very Good | |||
I would have said 17.. But for the last move to the anchors. 18 is bang on the money. This is really good climbing, and now that the route is cleaning up its great value for money. I really enjoyed it.
22 | ★ Train Travel | 16m | ★ Good | |||
One move to the grade... Probably the hardest single move I did all day. The lower wandery climbing is a bit average, but once you leave that cave its great fun to the top. Don't try and jug haul the pillar! Leave it to baffle generations of climbers who climb past it wondering how the laws of physics (and geology) permit such a thing to exist!
21 | ★★ Jingle Bells (First Flake) | 15m | ★★★ Classic | |||
To me this style of climbing defines what climbing should be. Now if only it were 3 x longer it would be an ultra-mega classic. Great rock. Awesome stemming and laybacking moves to start, into some steepness, into an awesome techy rock-over-heel core-tension-off--undercling to crimp, then big move to jugs excitement, with some thought-provoking steepness to finish. Bloody brilliant. Do it as a warm up!
Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Bell Supercrag Duck Wall | ||||||
22 | ★★ Daffy | 20m | ★★ Very Good | |||
Waaaay better than it looks from the ground. The moves through the blankish prow are scary, fun, and techy, and the whole climb gets a great pump going. I had a great time on this one... Placed the draws, just wish I hadn't seen Ben climb it before so I could claim the onsight. Stays out of the sun until about 2pm, even when the rest of sunny side is baking!
Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Bell Supercrag Sunnyside | ||||||
22 | ★★★ Seamstress (Seam at Left End) | 22m, 10 | ★ Good | |||
Very good. The epitome of fun climbing up the seam to the cave, then some entertaining (though pretty easy) jugging with some thought-provoking moves to the anchors. If this were at any other crag it would be a consumer classic (complete with quick-clip lower-offs). Definately worth a shot.
Sat 31st Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Bells Line of Road & Chifley Rd Bell Supercrag Jean Jaurès Wall | ||||||
19 18 | ★ Slip, Snap, Splash. | 30m, 15 | ★ Good | |||
Maybe soft for the grade, but as some of the holds go it will probably be on the money. Quite good climbing, long, and not too intimidating. The rock is pretty solid, and I enjoyed it as a warmup. Thanks Ben!
Sun 25th Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Mount Piddington Flake Crack Area | ||||||
21 | ★ Sincerity Direct Finish | 16m | ★ Good | |||
Felt pretty easy this time. Still way better to reach over the top of this piece of wall than to bail out right and avoid the hard moves. Good value.
Mon 19th Mar 2012 - Nowra | ||||||
The Grotto Cliffline The Grotto Proper | ||||||
20 | ★★ Spinning Blades of Steel (Eat My Spinning Blades Of Steel, Mother....er) | 9m | ★ Good | |||
Got lost with all the bolts and hangers in the wall, and pumped out trying to sort it out. Knowing where to go, it felt quite easy second shot. Fun climbing, but as Ben says: a novelty route.
17 | ★★ L'Arch | 16m, 5 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Great climbing. Some hard moves at the top (especially if you're short), but funky all the way and worth every inch.
19 | ★★ Alien Space Monsters | 25m, 9 | ★ Good | |||
Exciting climbing, though with only one hard bit. Reasonably run out and with a nice dose of exposure. Definately worth the time to rope-up.
Mon 19th Mar 2012 - Nowra | ||||||
The Grotto Cliffline Donutland Leftside | ||||||
19 | ★ Apple Related Tragedy | 22m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
3 consecutive moves towards the top felt quite hard for the grade, but everything else was straightforward. Pumpy and a bit sandy, but still fun. Some weird bolting, though.
Sat 10th Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Bardens Lookout Little Triggers Wall | ||||||
24 | ★★★ Holy Leaping Shortarses, Batman | 15m, 7 | ★★★ Classic | |||
Clean on top rope, and felt solid the whole way. Should've made this another lead attempt, as after getting this on top rope I was too tired to deal with that cruxy footer near the bottom. Friggin' awesome climb!
22 21 | ★★ Lady Stardust | 21m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
Easy at 21 (as per the new guide). Dodgy to get to the second bolt, but well bolted after that. Good fun, not too pumpy, and climbs nicely.
Sat 10th Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Bardens Lookout Electric Blue Area | ||||||
19 | ★★★ Electric Blue | 35m, 7 | ★★★ Classic | |||
Awesome climbing. Definately take some wires for the start. Hard for the grade, with many tough sequences involving very different styles of climbing. DEFINATELY worth a lap.
Sat 3rd Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Binary Cave | ||||||
22 | ★★ La Niña | 25m, 10 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Some of the best rock at the crag, and some of the best climbing too. Funky start, delicate traverse, then some techy moves on crimps and jugs before a desperate crimpy finale. MY favourite climb in The Cave so far.
Sat 3rd Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Choc Chip Chai Sector | ||||||
19 20 | ★★ Choc Chip Chai | 15m, 7 | Average | |||
Jugging and a bit techny, but quite overhanging for the grade. Onsight in the rain except for choosing to grab the rung that serves as an anchor in order to avoid the wet crimps. Still calling it a tick, but I'll forfeit the onsight.
Sat 3rd Mar 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Binary Cave | ||||||
21 | ★ Whimsical | 12m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
Probably soft, unless you're a shorty. Cool bottom section with the crux about 2/3rds up. Reasonably good rock and tonnes of bolts. Makes an okay warm up.
23 21 | ★ Socially Inept | 12m, 4 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Closer to 21. Hard start move and techy hard move in the top third. Surprisingly good climbing. Definately worth a lap, and the best of the 3 slabs on this end of binary cave.
Sat 25th Feb 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Centennial Glen Wave Wall | ||||||
24 | ★★ The Tube | 12m | ★ Good | |||
Fun climbing, though definately soft for the grade. I'll take it, though, and it still took me 3 shots to tick it. Thought I had the onsight, but missed the side-pull and tried to throw off the crimp. Using the side pull is what makes this climb soft, but classy!
21 | ★★ Jaws | 15m, 4 | Average | |||
Yet another lap... My 6th or 7th, I think? Okay climbing as a warm-up, but hardly memorable.
Sat 25th Feb 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Shipley Upper Grey Slab | ||||||
18 17 | ★ Burning Jowls | 18m, 8 | ★ Good | |||
Yet another lap as a warm-up.
17 | ★ Good Fortune | 18m | ★ Good | |||
Yet another lap as a warm-up.
Sun 19th Feb 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Heathcliff | ||||||
19 22 | ★★ Bad Blood (Bad Blood P1) | 45m, 17 | ★ Good | |||
Bad rock for about 50% of the climb, but great climbing regardless. About right at 19.
18 | ★★ Fake Blood | 20m, 10 | ★ Good | |||
Start and crux are the only grade 18 moves on this. Pretty soft, otherwise. A reasonable climb, but hardly the "mountains classic" I keep hearing it described as.
19 | ★★ Chip Off the Old Block | 25m, 10 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Lead 1.5 years ago. Good rock and funky moves. Start is a bit precarious, and one rather hard crux sequence near the top.
Sat 11th Feb 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Binary Cave | ||||||
18 | ★ Please Dry | 12m, 5 | ★ Good | |||
Fun little climb. Shame about the crap rock at the top. If the seam was longer it would be Chasing Ami at Porters!
20 21 | ★★ Flash Flood | 18m, 7 | ★ Good | |||
Broke off the crimper used to gain the undercling at the crux on my onsight attempt. The crux is now more technical to gain the undercling, but easier after it (thanks to a new footer where the crimper was). Pretty good climbing, though not sustained at the grade.
19 | ★★ Birthday Bolts | 20m, 9 | Average | |||
Bloody hard for a 19. Easily a harder crux than the 21 (33 years) next to it. I don't think that some of the crucial micro-flake crimps are going to last either.
Sat 21st Jan 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Medlow Bath The Underworld | ||||||
19 | ? | 16m, 6 | Crap | |||
Abysmal... Utterly abysmal. Unpleasant climbing on the worst the blueys has to offer. For some parts of it what you are FORCED to climb on LITERALLY isn't rock, but soft dirt trapped between layers of clay. Don't even think about getting on it... seriously!
21 | ★ Hazzard County | 12m | ★ Good | |||
Another lap today for a warmup, and putting the draws on for a friend.
Sat 14th Jan 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Medlow Bath The Underworld | ||||||
21 | ★ Marcus Brutus* | 12m | Average | |||
Average climb. Challenging until you're past the second draw (hard to clip if your short, and dangerous to climb past it without the clip) then easy to the top.
21 | ★ Hazzard County | 12m | ★ Good | |||
2 laps today. The best of the 3 main "easy" climbs here. No particularly hard move, but quite pumpy, and quite sustained.
19 | ★ The Untouchables | 12m | Average | |||
Fun climbing but very soft. 17 is on the money,
Sun 8th Jan 2012 - Blue Mountains | ||||||

Great fun, though still quite challenging for me.
Sat 31st Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||

Fri 30th Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Medlow Bath The Sunbath | ||||||
22 | ★★ Just Boot It | 15m | ★ Good | |||
Pumpy, and exciting, though probably not a 22. The awesome jugs will only last so long, so get on it quick! =P
Fri 30th Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Medlow Bath Reservoir Dogs | ||||||
19 | ★★ Stuck in the Middle with You | 38m, 15 | Don't Bother | |||
Hard for the grade, and rock is in extremely poor condition. The difficulty and the funky moves are for all the wrong reasons, I didn't enjoy this one at all.
21 | ★★ Mr Orange | 38m, 17 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Great fun, but easy for the grade even when both pitches are done as a single giant pitch.
Mon 26th Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Mount Victoria Area Mount Piddington Eternity Area | ||||||
20 | ★★ Neil Diamond Syndrome | 25m | ★★ Very Good | |||
Wow, really good. Probably to the grade (solely for the first move off the ground, and one rather reachy move further up), and awesome at that. Jump on it!
Sat 24th Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Mt Boyce Upper Wall | ||||||
23 | ★ Watergate | 15m | Average | |||
The one hard move catches me by surprise. It's not the gaston, nor the bump... But the crossover that blows the onsight for me. Other than that, it's pretty easy for a 23, but worth a shot if you're in the area.
21 | ★ Vambrace | 15m | Average | |||
One of the easiest 21's I've done. It's nevertheless a fun climb.

Wed 21st Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Binary Cave | ||||||
21 | ★★ Thirty Three Years | 15m, 7 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Very good and quite exciting. The crux is totally not where you think it will be, and is a nice little technical puzzle. It's a real shame I don't think that this climb will last, as it relies on a few key holds that may not last the distance. Get on it while you can!

Leura Sublime Point West Face (Main Area) Middle Cliffs Theory of Negativity Wall | ||||||
20 | ★★★ Theory of Negativity | 22m, 9 | ★ Good | |||
Hard for the grade, but surprisingly good. It hides a classic sting in the tail to keep you working for it the whole way. Get on it!
Sat 17th Dec 2011 - Blue Mountains | ||||||
Blackheath Area Porters Pass Dogs, Cats & Apples Wall | ||||||
20 19 | ★★ Powerbra Rangers | 23m, 8 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Great climbing, lots of technical moves for the grade and definately worth another lap. Sustained.
20 | ★★ Nice Vice Baby | 20m, 9 | Average | |||
Would be great if the rock was better. The crux is pretty cool though (and the only moves to the grade).
Sun 11th Dec 2011 - Hospital Flat | ||||||
The Main Cliff | ||||||
17 | ★★ Headbangers Arete | 20m, 5 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Awesome arete climbing. Everything you could want in a harder grade arete, but contained within 20m of grade 17 climbing (and a weird finish). Definately worth the effort of roping up! - No chalk and someone elses climbing boots.
13 | ★ Do I Have To? | 20m, 5 | Average | |||
Completely unremarkable. Warm up, I guess. - No chalk and someone elses climbing boots.

Tombstone Boulders The Engine Block | ||||||
12 | ★ The Radiator | 15m, 4 | ★★ Very Good | |||

Sun 11th Dec 2011 - Hospital Flat | ||||||
Tombstone Boulders The Tombstone | ||||||
17 | ★ Fingers Columbia | 15m, 5 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Good fun. Reasonably sustained for the grade. I'm really struggling with identifying the good footers here. - No chalk and someone elses climbing boots.
17 18 | ★ Rusty Pins | 15m, 6 | ★ Good | |||
Quite good. 17 is more on the money (the new guide says 18... Maybe for 1 move). Sustained at 17, but a nice short route. - No chalk and someone elses climbing boots.
21 20 | ★★ Disco Inferno | 15m, 3 | ★★ Very Good | |||
Great fun. Tricky start to the first bolt, after that it's pretty straightforward. Fell on the first bolt on my first attempt, clean after that, and cruised it second shot. Other than the trad climbs here, this was the pick of the bunch in my opinion. - No chalk and someone elses climbing boots.

The start isn't as bad as difficult as it seems, and after that there is some interesting, thought-provoking climbing. A fun finish, as well.
22 | ★★ SWALK | 25m | ★ Good | |||
No single move -even the start- could be called a 22, but I certainly worked up a good pump before reaching the anchors.

Not bad. Easy moves after the bouldery start... Just pumpy.

22 19 | ★ Sloper for Saddam (Slopers for Saddam Direct Start) | 15m, 3 | ★ Good | |||
Definately not 22 with the direct start. Maybe an easy 20-ish? Like everyone else here, I thought the direct start was the original route. Still fun, though.
20 | ★ Aonang Aonang | 12m, 3 | ★ Good | |||
Contrived if you want to follow the line of bolts (traversing out right, then back again, then right a bit), but not a bad climb on its own... Just superceded by the climbs on either side of it.

19 | ★★ Little Triggers | 25m | ★★ Very Good | |||
Quite sustained for a 19... A great deal of climbing for 25m or so.
19 20 | ★★ Go Lotto | 22m, 7 | ★ Good | |||
Mostly fairly easy, but a hard move near the bottom, and an reasonably challenging one at the top. The lower crux seemed to be giving a lot better climbers than me quite a bit of trouble.
22 | ★★ Hang onto Yourself | 20m | ★ Good | |||
Climbing to the first 3 bolts is fun, challenging and scary... After that it's a bit cruisy. Still took me 2 shots to commit to the crux.
