Bloody brilliant day out. Managed to be very efficient finding our way in and up the first five pitches before 11 am. Proudly onsighted the opening boulder problem only to snap off a thumb press while resting above, take a nice whipper, and have to do it all again. All the higher-graded pitches were great value. Made the mistake of climbing up to the roof for the traverse, which complicated clipping the middle bolt. Actual crux for me was the last two bolts of P7. After all the endless jug hauling and making it this far up, suddenly it turns to shitty slopers. Took the mother of all whippers trying to clip and sailed a long way back down. Definitely made harder by doing it in full, sweaty sun by that point and also running out of quick draws on the front loops of my harness. Anyway, despite all the fearmongering and growing levels of worry after reading about other people's epics, we had a blast! Thoroughly enjoyed the reading material in the emergency bin too - may all of Mel's dreams come true.

Got excited for this traverse until my hands went and dunked into a pool of slime. Both hands. So I sat to recoop. Got to arete and thought I needed to rest more before pulling the lip but it was actually chil. And fun

9 17 20 Second lead by Stephen Hall
10 18 30 Sport lead by Shazzy

God damn did I freak out. My foot broke off 2 holds at separate times. One was when moving off the last traverse bolt. Went to step across with right foot and left foothold broke off but I caught myself with my left handhold. Then up a few more bolts and my right foothold broke off too. All ironstone climbing I was so scared to put my weight on anything

Finally got to jump on this climb so I was super stoked however I got challenged on this! I mean, comments say it's an easy 19 but I reckon if you climb trad or cracks it's an easy 19. I did not expect a tonne of layback larrys. Commiting. But definitely became a super easy multi after the first 3 pitches. Hardest 19 multi I've done. What an adventure

26 Big Nose - with yim
5 Second lead by yim

Incredible move going out from the roof back onto the face. Found a heel/toe cam to get established going horizontal out of the roof, then letting go of it puts you in this epic swinging cut loose, quick pull-up, then back onto another foothold to keep going.

6 Sport lead by Josh Peters

Super nails, probably the hardest pitch we did. Runouts were so wild I decided now would be a good time to start having a mantra while leading.

7 Second lead by yim

The money pitch. The traverse across the big roof was nothing short of epic. Staying low on good feet made the stomach stay mostly in place, but the sheer exposure and risk of a sketchy rope dragging fall was enough to keep your cheeks clenched.

8 Sport lead by Josh Peters

Dunno if a single bolt for a 30 meter pitch is exactly what I had in mind for the top out, but I guess that’s what you get when you jump on a route bolted for 26 climbers.

Thankfully the hold I tore off and the whip I took was only a meter or so above the sole bolt. Tapped every piece of rock a good dozen times from there on out.

Linkup of the first 6 pitches of RRR into a 60m traverse to finish out on the nose. Super faffy to organise, but extremely glad we did - was a sick day out.

All moves free baby!

Feel pretty confident with it being grade 25 as its harder than any previous trad route I’ve done, even after figuring out all moves and gear.

This thing is cooked: a wide boys style heel toe cam into the roof crack leading into a dead point to a hand jam. Maybe there is other beta but by George it works and does it feel amazing to climb!

After an emergency shipment of big cams last week, I finally had the gear to climb the route!

Managed to aid through the roof today and find all key holds + placements. Some wild, wide-boys style beta needed to climb Chinchilla but it actually started to look possible after the gear was found and holds had some chalk.

After trying the moves, and sticking a few of them, thinking the grade is 25ish. Today technically an FA, albeit in the most hang-dogging of styles. Aiming for an FFA attempt next week.

Huge day, bucket list ticked. 3L of water between us, carried too much food. Was told 100m fixed line was at the abseil so only brought one rope. Missed out on a haul line for the backpack but less logistics to manage.

To say that I dogged this would be an understatement. Jay carried the team on this one, especially considering that we had 2 other groups behind us. First pitch was definitely the crux, and the 19 traverse was really gripping. Overall, an amazing day out.

most of this climb i was stressed about being benighted and was having a pretty awful time. (neglecting to eat out of fear of 'wasting time' definitely did not help). then when we watched the sun go down and shed a tear each for our collectively fragility at the bottom of pitch 7, my worst nightmare had finally come true. and it was fine turns out. At that point, I had the best time ever on the top four pitches singing, being merry, killing rope management, and taking in the sweet sweet moonshadow cascading across the walls of the Grose. not even a wall plagued with funnelwebs could have gotten me down. big ups to boss noodles for the meal and hospitality. no thanks to my weak as piss stomach that couldn't handle our dine and discover feast after subsisting off 1.5 litres of water and 7 peanut m&ms for the 12 hours prior.

Lovely day out!

Got stuck for a while on P2 when moving from the corner to the arete. Ended up frogging the arete and throwing up to the high jug (might have got my RF high into the pocket? can't remember, I tried a lot of things).

First attempt on P3 had to rest after trying to go up the fingernail crack and getting in an awkward position. Lowered off, climbed back up and grabbed the layback block like I should have done the first time. But after this and 'Tol' it seems I suck at laybacks at the moment.

Jess wandered onto 'BBB' on P4 so P5 I just took the normal BBB route up to the lunch ledge, then we had lunch and restarted on the wrong tree and then the right tree.

By the time I started P8 my body was already in some trouble: cramps started in my forearms, then as I pulled onto the traverse, fingers, then finally legs. Despite the great holds on the traverse, I really didn't fancy having to ascend here while my body seized up so I had a rest under a bolt where I could cam my leg in the break. Should have drunk more water and electrolytes at lunch!

P9 and P10 on the headwall were juggy affairs, mostly about ignoring the blinding sun, biting flies and choosing holds that don't snap.

I actually enjoyed P11 since the climbing was fun and the rock quality was better (or at least, only bad in obvious places).

Getting the send here was optimistic given my current fitness levels, but the climbing and scenery still made for a great day out.

Gear: 16 draws was more than enough, though would have been nice to have more alpines/slings even though we had double ropes anyway. Also needed an extra long sling for the tree belay.

Fav pitch: Pitch after the traverse

Least fav pitch: First pitch, not due to the climbing but due to MY climbing

Fav move: Pitch 2 slab crux

Fav belay: Hanging belay on the headwall up top

New learning: The art of aid climbing (French freeing) on pitch 1

Something I would do different next time: Haul that bloody bag on pitch 1

Exciting moments: Trying to combine P7 and P8 without enough quickdraws

Constant fear factor: Dropping them climbing shoes

Scariest moment: Witness a guy use fiddle stick on the Weaselburger abseil

Proudest moment: Checking out the emergency bucket. Holyshit there is a lot of stuff in there and I might have added a gourmet chocolate bar that will give guarantee the poor survivors a trip to the dentist.

Managed to grit through and top out but the rope got stuck at pitch 7 belay station so I had to gri gri down to rescue it and self belay back up. Took a breather at pitch 9 and finished it. Nats gift to me for my birthday. It was great to finally climb Stephen Hawkshaw's Big Schnoz. Probs the biggest Punter to have climbed this route. Sorry to anyone who heard me swearing my way up on second hahaha

First half of the route is pretty slabby with small holds. The crux being super thin. Props to Nat who whipped over 5 times till he got it clean. Whereas I spent most of this pitch aiding on draws.

The upper pitches are far nicer however don't flow aswell as Bunnies or Hotel.

The Traverse pitch is insane! you spend most of time traversing mere millimeters from the void untill you step up to grab the schnoz!

Has anyone else noticed that there is a shape of the face in the rock!! also whats the big guys name????

Pretty stoked to have actually got up this!!!

This is an epic and hard climb! The traverse is the money pitch, I'm happy to have lead that one. I'd probably do the linkup of the first 3 pitches of 'Contented Cows' if I ever try this again. This sport bunny needs to work on his endurance. 40m pitches at the end of the day leading with a backpack was tough work. Hung on the rope on the last bolt of P6, and pulled on a draw where the jugs run out near the top of P7.

The headwall of P6 and P7 is amazing! Awesome climb, very accessible at the grade.

Sweeet, was a great day. Bit of an epic, but nevertheless (therefore?) great. Good climbing all the way. Spaced, but reasonably bolted. I've kind of tried to free the crux, but decided to go back down to get a stick and clip that bolt. It looks pretty desperate and I couldn't have done it. Also the rest of the pitch is stiff and nowhere near a 23 I'd say. There was - and still is (28.1.18 ) - a small stick on the belay after pitch 1. Might be good to take your own on up with you though, just to be sure. Should reach it with a long panic-draw, I guess. The roof-pitch is awesome, the traverse amazing and puts you in a fucking spledid position. Felt easier than 21 though. Got in the rain at that time and topped out drenched to the skin.

3 climbers, 9.5h car to car, 7h climbing. Rested and pulled on draws during the harder parts of P1, climbed the rest clean. Led pitches 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10. A pretty full-on introduction to Pierce's Pass!

BETA:

  1. Solid for the grade. Crux pulling first roof, hard reachy moves below 2nd roof, hard thin finish. Good rests in between. Semi-hanging belay. Maybe grade 20 with quickdraw-pulling in the two roofs.

  2. Slabby, and a bit runout just before it becomes less steep.

  3. Easy.

  4. Super easy.

  5. Fun jug hauling up the wall, then just a walk left from the top.

  6. Crux moves off the ground pulling the roof, then easy (grade 17?) but runout and massively exposed traverse. A second falling here would be bad, and they may need to be lowered to the start of P5! Use a long sling for bolt 7.

  7. Crux move off the belay, then cruisy jug hauling.

  8. Cruisy. Use a long sling/draw in the first cave.

  9. Walking. No bolts, forget the belay and coil the ropes. Head right past cave until rock turns dark grey.

  10. Sandy, brittle, and unpleasant. Beware sharp edges and loose rock on topout.

Went with a friend who did most of the leading. Don't be fooled by the 18 grade. Some parts are tricky bouldering moves in fairly exposed areas. Take some energy gels for the last few pitches! They are definitely the best. Some crappy undergrowth on some of the middle, lesser graded pitches, you have to scramble a bit to find the anchors since the fires.
