As you drive up the Whitney Portal road towards Mount Whitney, a number of clean-looking light-gray granite buttresses appear on either side of the road.
Acceso
There are three parking spots along the Whitney Portal road, depending on which wall/buttress is being climbed, different ones make sense.
Drive up the Whitney Portal road from Lone Pine, the only stop-light on US 395 through Lone Pine. The first pull-off is for the Meysan Lakes Trailhead at just over 11 miles. About 3/10ths of a mile further, just about at the Mount Whitney Group campground, an old road (Wood Rd) goes off to the right (gated) and there is a pull-off to park there. Finally, a further 1/2 mile up is the Mount Whitney trail (if you want to climb Mount Whitney from this side, this is the trail-head) parking lot, and a turn-around loop with the Whitney Portal Store.
