요약

The original rock climbing area on Vancouver Island, with several trad FA’s starting in 1972. A second wave of development, this time of sport routes, occurred in the early 2000’s.

설명

A series of conglomerate cliffs on the east aspect of Stoney Hill, in a dramatic setting overlooking Sansum Narrows and Salt Spring Island.

접근 문제들

The cliff is on private property, although the land owners do not actively enforce it. Play a low profile and leave no trace.

The first route you see after arriving at the bottom of the stairs. Farthest left line at Tennessee Wall.

FA: Jeff Strang & Trevor Prest

The next bolted line to the right of Wasp Buckets. Climb through a small roof section (crux), to a bolted belay station, then a steep slab for the second pitch.

FA: Jeff Strang & Trevor Prest

Originally climbed as a run out trad line by Peter Croft (with a single piece of poor gear half way up) as a direct start of Tennessee Waltz. Then in 2000, Jeff Strang and Trevor Prest added the bolts just left of Croft’s original line, and called it Sweet Sansum, 5.8.

Named after a flake cleaned on the FA that rocketed toward a pooch at the base.

FA: Stewart Wozny & Daryl Hatten

Climb the large curved flake crack (originally its own climb, known as The Sickle) up under the awesome Tennessee Roof. Escape from under the roof onto the face on the left then up to ring anchors.

FA: Tom Egan & Stewart Wozny

Climb the starting flake crack of Tennessee Waltz, then head straight up on a bolt line to the right of the roof.

A short, vegetated crack 20 meters right of Tennessee Waltz. Has ring anchors.

FA: Tom Muirhead & Tom King

The bolted climb that starts in a small grove of trees on the ledge.

FA: Jeff Strang & Trevor Prest

The large, straight diagonal heavily vegetated crack that goes right to the top of the cliff.

FA: Tom King & Tom Muirhead

A two pitch bolted line that starts just right of the unmistakable diagonal Hot Chocolate crack. Very consistent 10- climbing, with the crux near the top of the first pitch.

FA: Jeff Strang & Trevor Prest

경고 Fixed Gear: Oldschool bolting on lead

A long, unmistakable curving crack that ends about two thirds up the cliff face. Among the first FA’s at the Narrows and therefore historically one of the first established crag climbs on Vancouver Island. Probably the closest thing the island has to a truly historical non-alpine rock climb.

FA: Tom Muirhead & Stewart Wozny

Routes from Green Onions to Right Guard are not in the right order

A bold climb with marginal gear in its original state warranted an R/X rating. Stewart Wozny made an initial bold foray with near success, subsequently completed by Daryl Hatten

FA: Daryl Hatten & Stewart Wozny (within a few feet of completion)

Starts halfway up the wall, can be accessed by the fixed line running along the ledge. Has a plaque

Originally done in 2 short pitches

FA: Stewart Wozny & Steve McConnell

Starts in the corner between the two sport roofs. The individual pitches go at 5.10a/30 meters, 5.8/20 meters, 5.7/20 meters, 5.9/15 meters.

FA: Mike Cardinal
