Ascents in Walter Schnell Gedenkwand

Astonishingly good slab and crack climbing. After the first two moves, it's solid rock right up to the anchor (except for one little break at half height). Beautiful, elegant moves in the slab and two parallel, flaring finger cracks with some finger locks and layback moves to finish up.

Classic crack up the centre of the pillar. Difficult to get out under the roof, but it seems I missed a good hold out left. Nice offwidth section afterwards, right leg jams nicely once you've pushed yourself up a bit using the good sidepull on the left-hand side. Over the last bulge using a fist jam. The rock is a bit splintery. Helmet recommended for the belayer.

Not as bad as the guide books and even the first ascensionist describe it. A large nut between the first and second bolt is necessary, though. Interesting rock structures, less choss than anticipated. The upper bulge, however, has probably undergone some transformation since the first ascent if this was supposed to be 6+. Probably around 7 now, maybe even 7+, reachy moves, hard to get your feet up.
