A great intro to Darrans mutli-pitch climbing. Second pitch is kind of funky, feels a bit like you are being forced onto the arête, rather than just climbing the face. P3 is great. P6 has some hollow flakes, including one with a bolt in it, I'd not clip this one if I were you.

Maybe 90m divided into 4 pitches, definitely not 120m. Is kind of a shame that you are missing like 2 m (with single 60m rope) while rappelling the last two.

Two stars for the first 3 pitches, one for the remaining 6. Definitely worth doing as a relatively easy day outing from Homer, but some might prefer to rap after pitch 3, as it’s really the standout. Still, a nice addition to the area and it was cool to walk off the top and descend past Black Lake.

Perfect choice for my first route in the Darrans. A long but not overly long approach with some technical scrambling, then brilliant climbing and impeccable rock quality. I led the odd pitches, and we decided to end it after the last grade 20 pitch as the 13 didn’t seem to add much value. Done in around 11 hours hut to hut. Very keen to return for the other routes on the Mate.

Incredible! Overall very sustained and technical climbing, with an epic approach. Pitches 4 and 6 were most intense leads for me. I took cams from 0.3-1, dmm offsets and walnuts from 1-5, was happy with that rack.

Flowy and fantastic. Great climb for the grade…decent runouts but easy climbing. Competed in 1hr 15. FYI a 70m rope plus stretch gets you just above the anchors of pitch 3 (RH variation).

I think this was the favourite out of the 3 for me, the first pitch felt a little hard for 20 but it was very good nonetheless. lots of beautiful granite slab climbing with the use of some cracks for gear, but again pretty much a sport route.

The walk in might have been my favourite bit of the climb - Like a mini Grand Traverse in Queenstown, but with Fiordland views. Climbing was good, most fun pitch was probably the 19. Views the whole way are spectacular. Pretty much a sport route, with a few bits of gear where it's easy to place, and the climbing is a bit mellower.

Not sure if we were off route or what but the description on ClimbNZ did not have a healthy relationship with reality. Spent the whole day in complete whiteout so didn't get to enjoy the views. We bailed on our original plan to reverse the Talbot McPherson when it started snowing at the top and rapped down the Couloir route, which was a bit exciting because we didn't know anything about it, and could barely see a hand in front of our faces

Amazing slab climb! We connected the first two pitches with a 70m rope. Fun and flowy till the third pitch (19) definitely had to switch on a bit for the first three or so bolts then it eases off. Always fun climbing next to a waterfall! Climb it in the morning as it receives full sunlight and warms the rock.

Fun climb, amazing views, we climbed it using a 70m rope, went left after the second pitch, had no issues getting down but for the first rappel went to the belay station for the right hand variation at the top of the 3rd pitch as it was slightly higher

Highly recommend bivvying as high as possible. We did a variant start that I don't recommend I scrambled up onto sloping ledge from left hand end and built a poor belay (sling, purple peanut, upside down cam) before it turned to slab. Pitch 1: 19 * 46m Diagonal right across slab and up into hanging v corner (#3 & #4 quite useful here, step R around arete and climb the easy face above, then crimpy traverse R to a belay at a cramped stance at the base of the second 19 pitch on the Direct North Buttress Pitch 2 19 * 40?m Up steep handcrack corner to a big chockstone belay on the arete of the buttress. Shared with Standard Route Pitch 3 16 30m? Up nice finger crack left of the buttress to big ledge with horn belays Pitch 4 17 45m Tricky corner on the right, then up to chockstones on the prow Pitch 5 14 * 40m Short juggy face to easy slab, belay at small stance with a big block and cracks. A bit runout but easy. Pitch 6 16 * 48m Somewhat runout face to belay in groove (red totem helpful). Second had to simul a little with 50m ropes Pitch 7 15 Start up groove then face on right on ribs and featured rock to nice sloping stance below gully. Pitch 8 50m 13 Up gully and cracks on right. Lots of cracks for belays, no big stances. Pitch 9 14 50m Up nice slabby face on right, into blocky gully on left when necessary. Big ledge near summit Pitch 10 15m Up chimney on left onto summit ridge (might be able to walk around?) Walk and scramble through boulders to summit. We abseiled a scary line that I wouldn't recommend down the north east face from a slung boulder pinch.

Honestly one of the most incredible alpine routes I've done. Great beta from Paul Rogers to do a slightly different variation to normal... P1 - up the corner as per normal. Couldn't see sling on rock (13th Jan 23), just belayed wherever) P2. Finish left facing corner, but go straight up short, steep left facing corner (grade 18/19?). This would normally be dirty and wet I imagine, but made for some funky laybacking early in the day. Recommend double rack of 0.3/0.4 cams. Belay soon after topout of corner. P3. Grade 18 left facing corner system (identifiable by large pocket halfway up on left face) to take you to the upper choss shelf. Absolutely splendid pitch, such a dream. P4. Grade 14 traverse, run up on chossy ledge, then traverse directly horizontal before dropping slightly into another short left facing corner system. Upper pitches were phenomenal, an absolute dream to lead. Topo of our route uploaded as a photo showing the two corner systems used. Would recommend them to ensure you're not just running up blocky vegetated scrambles waiting for the top pitches! Take the time to study the route... getting lost will ruin an otherwise wonderful route!

Awesome climbing, blocked by powerful move for pitch 5 that meant I had to bypass using the thrutchfest 17. Unfortunately a dislocated shoulder ended the day! Would've loved to try the top pitches.
